Everyone fell silent, faces stiff and blank, hardly daring to believe they had just heard the ultimate, earth-shattering piece of gossip.
Fengguang’s face turned beet red. “Song Wuxia! Watch your wording!”
Song Wuxia smiled and said, with very little sincerity, “I spoke out of turn.”
That single sentence made it sound as though there were some secret agreement between the two of them—one that he’d accidentally let slip.
“Song Wuxia!”
Fengguang jumped in place as she shouted his name, only to be met with his leisurely reply: “I had no idea my name sounded so pleasant to the Crown Princess’s ears, that she calls it out so loudly and so often. It truly invites misunderstanding.”
“You—” She ground her teeth, utterly unable to come up with anything to refute him.
Just then, a messenger soldier rushed in from outside. “Fourth Prince! The Crown Princess is missing. His Highness the Crown Prince is sending people to search and would like to borrow the guards from the Fourth Prince’s residence!”
Baili Shu looked toward Fengguang.
Only then did Fengguang remember that she’d been separated from Baili Mo. Seeing the guards with their heads lowered, she said, “No need to look anymore—I’m right here!”
The soldier looked up, startled. The reason was simple: Fengguang usually loved wearing red, but today she was dressed in blue-green. In his hurried glance earlier, he’d mistaken her for an unimportant bystander and overlooked her.
Now that he realized the person before him was the Crown Princess, the junior officer hurriedly said, “This humble officer failed to recognize you. Please forgive me, Crown Princess!”
Fengguang asked directly, “Where is the Crown Prince right now?”
“He’s still searching everywhere for the Crown Princess. With you missing, His Highness is extremely anxious. Crown Princess, please come with me to see the Crown Prince.”
Fengguang said, “Take me to him at once.”
“The Crown Princess seems quite anxious—just as the rumors say,” Song Wuxia drawled. “The Crown Prince and Crown Princess are deeply devoted to each other. Truly enviable.”
Fengguang instinctively shrank back a little. She assumed he was mocking her over her earlier talk of divorce. In truth, she wasn’t that anxious—she was just worried. She’d been separated from that pitiful Crown Prince for too long, and if anything happened to his frail body, she wouldn’t be able to escape responsibility either.
But she couldn’t explain all that in front of so many people. And besides, she’d been bullied by him so many times—what was wrong with indulging in a bit of petty spite?
So Fengguang replied with pointed sarcasm, “The Crown Prince is my husband. Of course, I care about him. As for Lord Song, I also know that you’re alone in the world—so it’s only natural you’d feel a bit sentimental.”
As she spoke, Fengguang glanced around, then walked over to a table. She pulled a nearly wilted flower from a vase and stuffed it into Song Wuxia’s hand. “Today is the Flower Deity Festival. Lord Song, don’t be too sad. Look, didn’t I give you a flower? Do you feel a little better now?”
Song Wuxia looked at the flower in his hand, then suddenly smiled—handsome and effortlessly charming. “The Crown Princess is so thoughtful. I do feel much better.”
“That’s good. People must always look forward in life. I hope Lord Song will live on bravely and with strength.”
Song Wuxia smiled faintly but said nothing.
She patted his shoulder again. “Lord Song, enjoy yourself. I’m going to find the Crown Prince.”
With that, she left the room together with the officer.
“Eldest Sister-in-law!” Baili Shu called out.
“Fourth Prince,” Song Wuxia said coolly.
Baili Shu froze, the foot he’d been about to step out the door never quite landing.
Song Wuxia continued, “As for the matter of the Villains’ Alliance, I still have much to discuss with the Fourth Prince.”
Baili Shu’s face went pale.
