As for Ye Minxing, he had also seen the headlines. Over the past month, he had grown closer to Su Tang and realized she might be the one truly suited for him. Though he once cared deeply for Fu Qingli, their relationship had been far too fraught, and his feelings for her had long faded.
Last night, he had confessed his feelings to Su Tang during dinner, only to be gently rejected. Yet her reluctance gave him hope.
Now, determined to win her over, Ye Minxing had already booked a meeting with a jeweler to design a special piece for her. Today, he planned to propose.
When Ye Minxing woke up and went downstairs for breakfast, he glanced at his phone to check the time—8:30 a.m. It was still early. The screen lit up with a bunch of unread messages, but he turned it off without reading them.
Breakfast first. I’ll deal with it in the car.
However, as Ye Minxing sat at the dining table, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. His parents were already seated, waiting for him. Ever since his divorce, he had moved back home. The Ye family parents, concerned he might fall for someone they deemed unsuitable, insisted on keeping him close.
“Mom, is there something going on?” Ye Minxing asked.
His mother lifted her chin slightly and said, “Eat first. We’ll talk after.”
Frowning, Ye reached for his phone, but his mother’s stern gaze made him put it down and continue eating. In just a few bites, he finished his sandwich and coffee. “Alright, now can you tell me what’s going on?”
In a calm but firm voice, his mother replied, “You need to cut ties with Su Tang. She’s not suitable for you.”
“???” Ye Minxing was dumbfounded. “Mom, what are you even saying? Weren’t you the one who kept pushing me to be with her?”
His mother remained expressionless. “Yes, I was. But that was before. This morning, the Su Corporation was investigated. Their operations across the country are under scrutiny. Even if the company doesn’t completely collapse, it will be seriously crippled. If you continue your relationship with her, our family might also come under investigation. So, she’s no longer suitable for you.”
Ye Minxing was stunned. He understood every word but couldn’t quite make sense of them strung together.
“What do you mean by ‘investigated’? And ‘under scrutiny’?!”
Seeing his mother’s usual cold demeanor, he quickly unlocked his phone, opened his news app, and found the top headline: Turmoil at the Su Corporation.
Clicking on the article, he saw a report from a financial news outlet. Early that morning, government agencies had launched a massive investigation into the Su Corporation, involving teams of building inspectors and experts. Even the Su family’s founder had been denied entry to his company buildings. Overwhelmed by the situation, the founder had been hospitalized.
The article was accompanied by several photos: the Su Corporation’s office building, an ambulance transporting Mr. Su to the hospital, employees being blocked at the entrance, and experts inspecting Su-owned construction sites.
There were also screenshots of past news reports about accidents in properties owned by the Su Corporation—fires, electrical issues, and more. While these incidents hadn’t drawn much attention at the time, they painted a damning picture now.
Why were there so many accidents in Su-owned properties?
The comments section was a flood of criticism:
- “Wow, this is karma. Su Tang always acted so arrogant—guess we know why now!”
- “No surprise. Typical greedy capitalists.”
- “I’m terrified. My house was built by the Su Corporation. I’m calling an inspector right now!”
- “Turns out those ‘government workers’ inspecting our building weren’t movers after all—they were investigators!”
Ye Minxing read through the comments, rubbing his temples as dizziness overcame him.
After several seconds, he hesitantly asked, “Is this… real?”
Being well-connected in the business world, his family had already verified the situation. His father, sitting sternly across from him, nodded gravely. “It’s real, and it’s severe. The compensation costs alone will drain the Su Corporation dry, not to mention the penalties and criminal charges. The Su family is finished.”
Ye Minxing gave a bitter laugh, finally opening his messages. Most were from friends:
- “Big trouble for the Su Corporation. What now, bro?”
- “I asked my dad about it. Looks like there’s no way to intervene—this one’s a lost cause.”
He had assumed these were work-related messages and ignored them. Now he realized just how bad things had gotten.
That morning, his thoughts had been entirely consumed by Su Tang, but now his parents were ordering him to cut ties with her, using the Su Corporation’s downfall as an excuse. Frustration welled up inside him as he reflected on how transactional and cold his family had always been.
Everything is about profit and loss with them.
Taking a deep breath, he said, “Mom, Dad, I get that the situation is delicate. But even if their company has issues, it doesn’t mean I’m in danger. This isn’t ancient times—there’s no guilt by association. Su Tang and I are no different from when I was with Fu Qingli. There’s no need to be so cautious.”
His father scowled. “Even if that’s true, she’s no longer a match for you. Marrying her now would be charity—worse, it could drag you down. I want you to marry someone who’s our equal, not someone far beneath us. Haven’t you learned enough about the struggles of marrying without family support?”
Ye Minxing was taken aback by his father’s bluntness, almost laughing in disbelief. “So that’s it? Your standard for a ‘match’ is wealth, not character? You nitpicked Qingli to death, but it was never about her personality—just that her family wasn’t rich enough.”
Sarcasm dripped from his voice as he continued, “Why not go all the way and have me marry into the richest family in the country? That way, you’d get some benefits too!”
“Stop talking nonsense!” his mother snapped.
His father’s expression darkened further as he demanded, “So, are you going to defy us again?”
With a cold look, Ye Minxing retorted, “Yes. You’ve told me over and over that Su Tang is the one for me. Fine. I’ve decided—I’m sticking with her. Happy now?”
Standing abruptly, he grabbed his phone and said, “I’ve already booked an appointment with a jeweler to design our engagement rings. Mom, Dad, I’m leaving.”
His father’s face turned pale with rage. Pointing a trembling finger, he shouted, “Stop right there!”
But this time, Ye Minxing didn’t want to listen. Without looking back, he strode out of the house.
