He Dan pursed her lips and didn’t respond, simply turning around and heading back.
This left Aunt Xiu Hong completely baffled.
He Dan was just too embarrassed to say anything. With a dark expression, she returned home, and when Du Qing relaxed a bit, he muttered, “I knew she wouldn’t say anything. Why did you even go? After how we treated her, it would be strange if she did say anything. Is she really that foolish?”
He Dan glared at Du Qing.
Her gaze was so piercing that it sent shivers down his spine. Du Qing couldn’t help but touch his neck, frightened, and asked, “What’s wrong?”
He Dan huffed coldly and walked out again. Du Qing wasn’t stupid, but she couldn’t let it go so easily. She thought about the children she had just seen at her house. She had heard that the girl seemed to have adopted a child, but she hadn’t paid it much mind at the time.
Now that she thought about it, that child was dressed far nicer than the average city kid. Was it possible that Du Qing Li was spending all her money on this child? Was that why she had to come and ask for money from her?
With no family ties, taking care of a child like that—wasn’t that just wasting money?
She went to Zhang Shuang Shuang and said, “Mom, I heard that Li has adopted a child. I don’t know whose child it is, but is there some relative’s child staying with us that we didn’t know about? Why would they have to live with Li?”
Zhang Shuang Shuang looked puzzled. “What child?”
“A little girl, dressed very nicely. I heard she came here in ragged clothes; these outfits must have all been bought by Li.” He Dan feigned concern and said, “This child is too wasteful. Why not raise a child properly instead of dressing her up like this?”
Zhang Shuang Shuang started to feel anxious. Even though the money had gone to Du Qing Li, how she spent it was still on their minds. If it was for Du Qing Li herself, she wouldn’t feel good about it, but now that she heard it was for a stranger’s child, she felt even worse. She immediately sat up straight, “Is she home?”
“She is,” He Dan replied.
Zhang Shuang Shuang immediately headed over. The two houses were close together, and she had only taken a few steps when she turned back to call Du Chuan to join her.
Both of them were worried. Upon hearing that Du Qing Li might be raising a stranger’s child and doing it well, they felt alarmed.
He Dan hung back, a smile creeping onto her lips, watching with amusement.
Du Qing Li had made her uncomfortable, and now it was her turn to return the favor!
What would she do about this?
Adopting a child was a big deal that required registration; they would have to cause a commotion for the two elders to realize.
Before long, they entered the courtyard. Zhang Shuang Shuang called out, “Li!”
Before Qing Li could come out, a beautiful little girl, about five or six years old, ran out of the courtyard. She was fair-skinned and pretty, dressed in a lovely floral dress, with a pair of black shoes that looked like they were bought from a store—not quite leather shoes, but still worth several dollars a pair.
At this sight, both of the elders’ eyes reddened. When Du Qing Li finally came out, Zhang Shuang Shuang eagerly pointed at the girl and sternly asked, “Li, what’s going on with this child?!”
Xiao Yu jumped in fright and quickly hid behind Qing Li.
Qing Li shielded her and looked at the elders with some confusion. “This is my adopted child, my little sister. May I ask what you need?”
Du Chuan maintained a stern expression, his face set. “Du Qing Li! You took our money and now you’re raising this child? How are you going to get married with a child like this? Are you really that foolish?”
“Exactly! Return the child!” Zhang Shuang Shuang said anxiously. “We didn’t give you money so you could raise someone else’s child! If you don’t want the money, just give it back! Your cousin still needs money to marry!”
Xiao Yu stayed silent, timidly clutching Qing Li’s clothes, full of dependence. She was easily frightened; if the strangers looked unfriendly, she wouldn’t dare speak.
Qing Li comfortingly patted her head and motioned for her to step aside. Then she turned to the elders, her expression growing cold as she said in a deep voice, “Have you both forgotten? We’ve split up! Whether I live or die has nothing to do with you. I won’t ask you for a single penny, so you can’t interfere in my affairs.”
Du Chuan’s expression also turned chilly. “I see you’ve been spoiled by your father. Not only are you reckless, but now you also dare to adopt someone else’s child! Give me the money, and I’ll keep it safe for you so you don’t waste it on this nonsense…”
Qing Li said nothing. Instead, she turned around and grabbed a broom, walking up to them with a cold expression. “Get out! I don’t want to talk to you anymore. Stay out of my business, and now I want you to leave!”
Du Chuan was furious at her behavior and rolled up his sleeves, ready to strike. “You have no sense of respect!”
“Bang!” Just as he moved, Qing Li swung the broomstick, striking his arm and making a loud noise.
Du Chuan’s face changed in pain, and he quickly stepped back.
Qing Li took the chance to swing the broom, hitting both of them.
“Hey!”
“Are you out of your mind?!”
“Du Qing Li!” Du Chuan stumbled backward, his elbow aching, and she swung the broom relentlessly, forcing him to retreat until he finally yelled, “Are you crazy?!”
“Leave!” Qing Li ignored him, only focused on driving them away, hitting them meant they were out of luck.
Although these two were her grandparents, they were still relatively young, and since the original father was their first child, they were not yet sixty years old. They had worked as farmers all their lives, and although they had some ailments, they were still nimble on their feet.
With her relentless strikes, Du Chuan and Zhang Shuang Shuang had no choice but to retreat from the courtyard. Though they were furious, they were not injured.
Zhang Shuang Shuang looked at her granddaughter, who was completely indifferent and no longer polite, and her heart ached as she clutched her chest and cried out, “Oh, how heartless! This girl even hit her grandparents…”
Neighbors gathered to watch the commotion, and Zhang Shuang Shuang cried out even louder.
Du Chuan stood there, simmering with rage, unwilling to leave.
Qing Li, however, had stopped attacking. She shut the courtyard door and turned to walk away as if no one was out there shouting at her.
She didn’t care, but Xiao Yu was scared and on the verge of tears. When Qing Li turned to walk back, she immediately ran over and cried, “Sister, what should we do? She’s yelling at you!”
Seeing how upset Xiao Yu was, Qing Li reached out to cover her ears and gently said, “It’s okay, you can’t hear them now!”
Xiao Yu: “???”
Outside the courtyard, the two elders stood speechless.
It’s so ugly to watch old people being shameless with younger generation. Tsk
I remember years ago seeing a video about rural people on China. It’s sooo..hmm unique.
