Pei Mingjiang immediately shook his head. “Of course not!”
Qing Li replied, “I don’t believe you unless you teach Pei Cheng a lesson.”
Pei Mingjiang glared. “Didn’t you just get back at him?”
Qing Li shook her head. “No, he bullied me first this time. I’m just defending myself! The swimming pool incident from two winters ago has left me with psychological scars. I often wake up scared at night. Aren’t you going to teach him a lesson, Great-Grandpa?”
She looked at him with a bright smile, her gaze pressing hard, her aura unwavering. Pei Mingjiang fell silent for a long time before finally saying in a low voice, “He’s already hurt badly.”
Qing Li replied, “I had a fever for a week back then.”
There was no room for negotiation.
Pei Mingjiang took a deep breath and lifted his smile again. “Alright, I’ll go teach him a lesson, but you can’t go around causing trouble in the future.”
Qing Li smiled but didn’t say anything.
Pei Mingjiang turned away, his expression serious.
Once he left, Qing Li looked out the window. In the backyard, the transparent glass house was visible.
Pei Cheng was facing the back door, anxiously peering out from time to time, wanting to know what was happening. After a short while, Pei Mingjiang appeared, and Pei Cheng became excited and wanted to ask about it, but was immediately shouted at by Pei Mingjiang, who pointed a finger at him. Then, he swung his cane toward Pei Cheng.
“Ah!!!”
A scream echoed through the backyard, startling the birds perched on the glass house, causing them to take flight.
Qing Li stood at the window, watching the whole scene unfold. The boy, who had been hit a few times, was embarrassed and furious, filled with indignation.
Although Pei Mingjiang was unlikely to hit hard, the humiliation was too strong. He had been beaten for Fu Qing Li, someone he had previously looked down upon; it was as if Pei Mingjiang regarded him as lower than an adopted girl.
Could someone like Pei Cheng be capable?
In a fit of anger, he snatched Pei Mingjiang’s cane and threw it away before running out in frustration.
Pei Mingjiang, on the other hand, became worried. After all these years of looking after his relatives, there were still feelings involved. He was startled by the action of losing his cane, and his face turned pale as he thought to chase after Pei Cheng. However, his body failed him; after just two steps, he froze in place, swaying slightly, trying to find something to lean on.
But there was nothing around to support him; he fell straight backward.
If he hit the ground, it would cause a serious problem.
Uncle Wei had been in the backyard, just about to chase after Pei Cheng when he saw Pei Mingjiang’s condition. Startled, he hurried to catch him.
Qing Li faintly heard Pei Mingjiang gasp out his last breath, saying, “No one is allowed to know about this today!”
“Okay, okay,” Uncle Wei replied in a panic, lifting Pei Mingjiang and heading back to the hospital.
Qing Li smiled with satisfaction. After being hospitalized twice in half a month, this was great; the Pei family’s stocks would plummet again!
This time, no one in the Pei family blamed Qing Li.
All the blame fell on the disobedient Pei Cheng. Even with the Pei family busy showing filial piety, the atmosphere seemed to clear up, and Qing Li felt the air was fresher.
The next day was the monthly exam in May.
Due to the tight schedule in high school, the monthly exams were condensed into one day, with two subjects in the morning and two in the afternoon. To ensure students got out on time, the breaks between classes were shortened.
After a month and a half of studying and reviewing, Qing Li found the monthly exams quite easy, especially in Chinese, math, and physics. As a result, she finished her morning exams early and used the extra time to review her English.
When she arrived at the classroom just before the noon exams started, she was called by a familiar voice as she reached the door.
Turning around, she saw Pei Xiyue leaning against the corridor of the adjacent classroom. His pale face was marked with dark circles from staying up late worrying about his grandfather, and his voice was hoarse. “You’re the one who made Grandpa hit Pei Cheng, right? He’s at home refusing to eat or drink, and his grandmother called to say he doesn’t even want to go to school today!”
Qing Li replied nonchalantly, “And?”
Pei Xiyue’s eyes narrowed sharply, and he said in a deep voice, “Things have been chaotic in the Pei family lately, and you’re the cause of it all! What do you want?! Do you enjoy watching everyone in a panic?”
“Yes!” Qing Li readily admitted.
Pei Xiyue gritted his teeth, feeling the suffocating frustration that his grandfather had experienced. He stepped forward, his face darkening. “I know the Pei family hasn’t treated you well, but they still provide you with living conditions that others envy. You shouldn’t be causing so much trouble over this. Ultimately, this is about the marriage contract, but don’t forget, the stakes are your own words!”
Qing Li wanted to laugh. At this point, anyone with eyes could see that Pei Mingjiang’s wariness of her was fueled by significant interests.
Was he pretending to be clueless or simply unwilling to acknowledge that his grandfather, parents, and relatives were a bunch of leeches eyeing her behind-the-scenes benefits?
They acted like they were doing her a favor while draining her resources, all without a hint of guilt, putting on a facade of benevolence!
The original host’s misfortune with the Pei family and falling for Pei Xiyue was indeed a stroke of bad luck. Qing Li clenched her teeth, feeling sorry for the original host, and didn’t want to hold back. She clenched her right fist and struck out fiercely.
“Bang!” The sound of a fist colliding with a face rang out. Pei Xiyue, caught completely off guard, stumbled back two steps, his brain seemingly rattled by the impact.
In disbelief, he turned around, the stinging pain on his face confirming that this was not an illusion. This time, Fu Qing Li had hit him!
It hurt quite a bit!
Qing Li decided to leave while the getting was good, retreating to a safe distance. She was now hitting a trained, tall boy, but it wasn’t enough; she coldly said, “I don’t care if you’re deceiving yourself, but I remember the stakes of our bet, and you shouldn’t forget them either!”
With that, the class bell rang, and she went straight into the classroom. Behind her, Pei Xiyue watched her with a complex expression, one hand pressed against his face but made no move to retaliate.
As soon as Qing Li entered, she bumped into a girl peeking around at the door. Their eyes met, and the girl grinned innocently.
Qing Li paused for a moment. “Want to fight? Meet me behind the teaching building after the exams.”
After the exams, she needed to find something for Pei Mingjiang to do and take revenge for the original host being bullied. She vaguely remembered that the girl from last night was known as the school’s rich girl, so she wondered how much money Pei Mingjiang would lose in this encounter.
The girl who was eavesdropping gasped in shock.
