Faced with her deskmate’s accusations, Qingli could only smile innocently.
She hadn’t expected this surprise either.
The original owner had poor grades, and Qingli thought it was because the cold treatment she received in the Pei family prevented her from studying wholeheartedly. Little did she know that she was a genius.
Thanks to this discovery, Qingli didn’t continue to follow the lessons step-by-step but instead took out her practice book to work on her own.
Sure enough, as soon as she saw the questions, the corresponding formulas and steps would automatically appear in her mind, and there was more than one method for solving the problems.
Qingli continued working through the problems, but one question stumped her; it was an Olympiad math problem that was far more difficult than the current teaching material.
After math class, Qingli took out the practice books for her other subjects and tried to solve them.
Although it wasn’t as smooth as with the math problems, she still found them manageable. When she reached her last subject, physics, she felt that familiar ease she had while solving math.
Qingli tackled one major problem for each subject, and just as the ten-minute break ended, she finished.
She let out a big sigh of relief, leaning back in her chair with a smile in her eyes.
Given the original owner’s level, she was undoubtedly a genius, and she also had an exceptional talent for mathematics and physics. Qingli suddenly recalled that both of the original owner’s parents were teachers; her father was a physics teacher, and her grandfather was also proficient in physics.
So, is this hereditary?
Qingli smiled faintly. With the original owner’s talent, combined with her abilities, becoming successful in three years would be too easy.
Feeling pleased, she paid extra attention in class. The next period was physics, and when the teacher asked for a volunteer to answer a question, Qingli raised her hand.
The physics teacher was momentarily surprised but quickly called on her.
This girl had raised her hand for the first time in class; it was important to encourage her to continue learning more seriously.
Seeing Fu Qingli raise her hand, her classmates stirred slightly, surprised.
Qingli stood to answer, speaking fluently and clearly, with correct and concise content.
The physics teacher smiled and said, “Very good, please sit down.”
As Qingli sat down, a note was passed to her: “Why are you so different now?! You listened so seriously in class?”
Qingli glanced at the teacher, who was still discussing the previous question, and quickly replied: “Just trying to study hard.”
Upon reading the note, Yao Yuhan felt even more tearful. How did her deskmate become the top student she looked up to?
From now on, no one would join her in mischief.
Overcome with sadness, Yao Yuhan propped her chin on her hand for a while, then was astonished to discover—she actually understood a question!
Qingli was also working hard to absorb knowledge, so she diligently noted everything the teacher said, trying to digest it. With the original owner’s foundation, it was very easy for her to understand. When the teacher asked them to solve problems on their own, she finished early and figured out a solution to the Olympiad math question that had previously stumped her.
“That’s a good approach. How did you come up with that?” a gentle voice suddenly asked beside her.
Startled, Qingli quickly looked up to see her physics teacher, Ms. Gao, bending over to examine the practice book in her hand, a hint of curiosity on her face.
She had been so focused on the problems that she hadn’t noticed anyone approaching.
This was unusual for Qingli!
Although she had been in a peaceful era for a long time, she had experienced war and faced countless dangers; some instincts remained, and she had never been so close to someone without realizing it until they spoke.
Despite her surprise, Qingli answered obediently, “I just tried a bit, and it worked out.”
Ms. Gao, a gentlewoman in her thirties, was known for her warm personality and rich teaching experience. She primarily taught an advanced class for top students.
She only came to the regular class because the school needed more physics teachers without wanting to lower the quality of hiring, so they added her to an ordinary class, which had less pressure and only required her to teach.
However, the school compensated her well, and Ms. Gao gladly accepted.
Listening to her student, Ms. Gao was a bit surprised. For an Olympiad math problem, it would be really difficult to solve without some background in Olympiad topics, especially coming from a student in a regular class.
After considering it, Ms. Gao thought it couldn’t just end there, so she picked up a pen and said, “Give me a piece of scrap paper, and I’ll give you a problem.”
Qingli immediately handed over the scrap paper, feeling a bit excited; she already knew her limits in math but was unsure about physics.
Ms. Gao swiftly wrote down… a math problem?!
Qingli: “???”
Perhaps her expression of confusion was too evident, as Ms. Gao chuckled lightly and said, “Math is the foundation. Even when studying physics, if your math isn’t good, it won’t help. That’s why physics teachers must be good at math.”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Qingli smiled, “Okay, I understand.”
Ms. Gao put down her pen, patted Qingli’s head, and walked back to the podium, cheerfully asking, “Is everyone finished?”
“Finished!” the students replied in unison.
Ms. Gao then began the lesson.
Qingli listened for a while, ensuring she understood everything before lowering her head to work on the problems. This question was slightly more challenging than the previous one, but it was of a similar type—challenging yet still within her capability.
Qingli pondered carefully, tried multiple approaches, and lost track of time until the class ended.
Ms. Gao walked over and gently asked, “Do you have any ideas?”
Qingli handed over her scrap paper.
This time, Ms. Gao was genuinely surprised—she had solved it!
Only a small part remained unfinished, but the previous steps and reasoning were correct. As long as she didn’t make careless mistakes, there was no doubt she would get the answer right.
Ms. Gao furrowed her brow slightly. “You have this talent; why did you perform poorly in math tests before?”
Qingli scratched her head and replied, “I’m not sure. I just couldn’t get the answers right during tests. But I should be okay now.”
Ms. Gao had a peculiar expression. She remembered that this child came from a well-off family; the school selection fee alone had been in the millions. The family situation couldn’t possibly be the reason for her poor performance. She had heard that her parents had passed away. Could it be due to childhood trauma, leaving her blank when facing exam papers?
However, she didn’t want to bring up the student’s scars, so she remained silent. Since Qingli said she was doing better now, she decided to try nurturing her talent further by giving her an even more difficult problem: “Take your time. If you can’t solve it, come to my office tomorrow at noon.”
This time, Qingli couldn’t solve it. So, until school was over, she kept the problem in her mind.
As the classmates cleaning up urged her to give up her spot, Qingli stepped out first. However, she only took her scrap paper and pen, running to the corridor to write. She also used a ruler to draw, but she still didn’t succeed, feeling like she was overlooking something.
At that moment, a cold teenage voice appeared about half a meter away: “Assuming KA is not perpendicular to BCD, try again?”
Qingli was taken aback. Looking at the problem again, everything suddenly became clear.
She had been trapped in the misconception from the previous question, fixating on the perpendicular condition. It dawned on her, and she quickly made the assumption, then wrote down a few more steps; the path ahead became clear.
Joyfully, she turned around to thank him, only to see a familiar face.
It was the boy who had helped her out of the bathroom that day.
Qingli was pleasantly surprised. “It’s you! Thank you.”
The boy nodded modestly and didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he said, “I haven’t seen you in the Olympiad math class.”
Qingli smiled with her lips pressed together. “This was given by our physics teacher. My grades were too poor before, so I didn’t go to the Olympiad math class.”
The boy looked both surprised and regretful. This question was a transformed version of the second-to-last question from last year’s CMO competition, which was not easy. How could she, without any Olympiad math background, grasp it so quickly and still say she had poor grades and didn’t make it to the class?
He pondered, “Do you want to try going to the Olympiad math class? Your grades may not be good, but you have great math talent. If you can win an award, you might be able to secure a place without taking the college entrance exam.”
Qingli’s eyes lit up. It wasn’t that she wanted to avoid the entrance exam, but she knew the rules of Olympiad competitions. Such competitions were a way to select talent, and the best way to stand out among many top students was to compete.
School tests catered to the vast majority of students; even achieving full marks wasn’t surprising.
Olympiad competitions were different.
She nodded eagerly. “Yes! Can I still register now?”
“You can.” The boy breathed a strange sigh of relief. “I’ll talk to the teacher. Registration ends this Friday, so there’s still time.”
He turned around, eager to leave, and Qingli was bewildered by his series of actions.
After taking a couple of steps, the boy returned and cleared his throat: “What’s your name?”
Qingli chuckled. “I’m Fu Qingli, from Class 4, Grade 11.”
“Got it.” The boy nodded seriously. “I’m Xu Nianhan, from Class 1, Grade 11.”
Time was running late, so Qingli decided to head back. She thought she would have to call a driver to pick her up again, but to her surprise, there was a car waiting at the empty school gate.
The car door was open, and a boy leaned against it, his long legs crossed, making them look even longer. He was playing a game on his phone with his head lowered.
As Qingli approached, Pei Xiyue looked up with a not-so-pleasant expression and said, “What do you mean by this? Are you trying to mess with me? I’ve been waiting for you for forty minutes!”
“Sorry.” Qingli apologized politely, then stepped around him and got into the car, saying, “Next time, you don’t need to wait. I’ll call when I’m back.”
Pei Xiyue snorted and got into the car as well, slamming the door shut with annoyance. “I know what you’re thinking, but it’s useless. Even if Grandpa doesn’t break off the engagement, I won’t have anything to do with you.”
Qingli nodded. “I’ve already made my position clear about wanting to end the engagement. Whether Grandpa agrees or not is no longer important; just consider the engagement terminated.”
“Are you serious?” Pei Xiyue asked doubtfully. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe her, but the gap between Fu Qingli’s previous attachment to the engagement and her current nonchalance was too vast. It seemed like an act.
“Seriously, you can still date,” Qingli said, pulling out a book.
It was a book Xu Nianhan had just given her, claiming it was something his teacher had no use for. Qingli thought it was a gift for her and awkwardly suggested giving him some money for it, to which he stated the price.
Qingli: “…”
Fortunately, she had gotten a new phone, and the pocket money card provided by the Pei family had funds in it. She transferred the money to him.
He was quite happy to exchange contact information, saying she could ask him anytime if she didn’t understand something, and he would help.
Now holding the book, Qingli couldn’t help but smile. Even when encountering some challenging problems inside, she didn’t frown.
Meanwhile, Pei Xiyue was becoming increasingly puzzled as he watched Fu Qingli immersed in her book, seemingly ignoring him completely. Out of curiosity, he craned his neck to see the content of the book.
After getting a clear view, Pei Xiyue was stunned: “???”
He couldn’t believe it. “You understand that?”
These were Olympiad math problems!
Don’t think he didn’t know about her grades; she was putting on an act, right? Was she reaching a higher level?
Qingli responded, “If I don’t understand, why would I be looking at it?”
Pei Xiyue chuckled, choosing not to say anything further. If she wanted to put on a show, let her; it didn’t concern him.
Mr. Li drove smoothly, and the road from the school to the Pei family was very good, so Qingli hardly felt any bumps. She became absorbed in her book.
The sensation in her body told her that the original owner liked math.
Qingli found it interesting and, while reading, pulled out a pen to jot down some notes. She didn’t even notice when the car stopped until the door opened, and a haughty voice angrily shouted, “Brother, why is she riding back with you?”
Immersed in her book, Qingli usually wouldn’t care about anything, but the moment she heard that voice, her heart trembled, and a wave of fear spread through her.
She frowned; something felt off.
The girl outside was the daughter of Pei Mingjiang, Pei Xiyue’s cousin, Wen Shi, who was two years younger and in the third year of middle school, so they didn’t attend the same school. The original owner had little interaction with her. Although she was spoiled, there was no reason for Qingli to feel scared.
Pei Xiyue lazily replied, “You should ask Grandpa; it was his instruction.”
“Hmph!” Wen Shi was angrier but didn’t dare to question Pei Mingjiang. Despite his friendly demeanor, everyone knew he had a reputation for being a smiling tiger when he was younger. Now that he was older and looked kind, if he became displeased, it would be even worse. However, she didn’t dare confront Pei Mingjiang but felt bold enough to face Fu Qingli.
After Pei Xiyue got out of the car, Wen Shi, seeing that the people inside hadn’t moved, maliciously smiled and picked up a cushion to throw it at Qingli. “Hey, can’t you get out of the car? Have you never ridden in a car before?”
Qingli quickly grabbed the cushion as it flew toward her and, using strength, threw it back in the opposite direction.
The cushion was filled with cassia seeds and was heavy. Wen Shi was caught off guard, and the cushion hit her squarely in the face with a loud “smack!”
Old Li, still in the car, widened his eyes in shock. Goodness, when did Fu Qingli become so bold?!
Wen Shi was momentarily stunned, feeling pain from the hit. The cushion fell to the ground with a soft thud, echoing silently in the quiet car. It seemed she never expected to be hit by Fu Qingli, whom she had always bullied?!
The next moment, coming back to her senses, Wen Shi pounced at Qingli with a fierce expression. “You dare to hit me!”
The space inside the car was small, and even as she rushed over, she only managed to lean over the back seat. Before she could get any closer, Qingli, still holding the book, smacked her on the head. The force wasn’t light, and another crisp “smack!” rang out as Wen Shi’s face stung, causing her head to hit the backrest. The chair was of good quality with some bounce, so she rebounded slightly.
Old Li, watching secretly: “!!!”
Wen Shi was enraged, but she knew she wouldn’t fare well in such a confined space, so she quickly retreated, crying as she ran toward the Pei family, shouting, “Waaah… Grandpa! Fu Qingli hit me!!!”
As Pei Xiyue reached the entrance, a figure resembling a cannonball zoomed past him. Hearing her cries, he turned back in shock to see the culprit approaching calmly, looking unfazed and incredulously saying, “Have you lost your mind? How dare you provoke Shi Shi?”
Qingli laughed, unfazed, and casually replied, “Maybe?”
Pei Xiyue: “…”
She had lost her mind!
Today was going to be the end for her!
As Pei Xiyue thought, the Pei family, Fu Qingli was a guest living under their roof, yet she dared to bully a member of the Pei family right in front of them. That was utterly outrageous!
Wen Shi had just entered to complain when Uncle Wei, the butler, appeared at the door with a stern expression and said to Qingli, “Hurry up!”
