The pain was so overwhelming that Jiang Xi lost consciousness.

In a daze, he slowly opened his eyes—only to find a tiny, shrunken version of his daughter standing in front of him. She was tilting her head up to look at him with wide, expectant eyes, holding a cup of milk in her hands. When she saw him glance her way, she piped up in a sweet, milky voice, “Daddy, Mommy says you have to drink milk before bed.”

Jiang Xi stared at her blankly, unsure how to react to the scene before him.

He had just seen this not long ago—this was Jiang Qingli at three years old, his daughter.

Maybe because he didn’t refuse her right away, the little girl grew bolder. Her eyes lit up, and she took two steps closer. “Daddy, drink the milk!” she urged again.

Tentatively, Jiang Xi reached out—and actually took it.

The warmth of the cup and the rich scent of milk made his mouth water.

A spark of joy lit up his eyes. Could it be… he had gone back to the past? Was Heaven giving him a chance to make things right because he regretted it so much?

The little girl had no idea what was going through his mind. Mission accomplished, she beamed, bouncing away happily. Just before leaving, she peeked her little head back in through the doorway. “Daddy, you keep working—A’Li’s going to bed now!”

The study door closed.

Only Jiangxi Xi remained.

He looked around. This was the old family estate. Ever since he’d fallen ill, he hadn’t returned here, and the study’s unchanged décor—identical to ten years ago—made the suspicion he’d just felt vanish.

How could he really have gone back in time?

A’Li probably wouldn’t even care for his attempts to make amends now.

Jiang Xi drained the milk in one go and stepped out of the study. It seemed quite late—downstairs, the lights were off, and only one room on this floor was lit.

It was his bedroom.

He slowly walked over. The door wasn’t fully shut, and inside he could hear a woman’s gentle voice along with a child’s innocent chatter.

“Mommy, I gave the milk to Daddy!”

“Wow, A’Li, you did amazing!” the woman said with a smiling tone.

“Heehee!” The little girl was overjoyed, sounding like she was snuggling up to her mother. “Tomorrow I’ll bring Daddy milk again!”

“A’Li’s not afraid of Daddy anymore?” the woman teased.

The little girl hesitated, her voice dropping to almost a whisper. “A little bit… but he’s my daddy. He’ll protect me. So I can’t be scared of him!”

Hearing such a long sentence from a three-year-old, the woman was surprised. “A’Li’s so smart! Who taught you that?”

“Teacher!” the little girl said proudly. “Teacher said Daddy’s the best person in the world and will protect me!”

That tender, childish voice was clearer and more beautiful than the most perfect music in the world.

Jiang Xi wanted to push the door open, scoop his daughter into his arms, and tell her that from now on, he would always protect her.

But just as he was about to move, the scene before him suddenly shifted. Images flashed through his mind—starting from when his daughter turned sixteen.

He saw her being sent to participate in the reality show Life in Reverse. There, she wasn’t as capable as he remembered from his own version of events. Instead, after repeated provocation from the production team, she lost her temper over and over, gaining a bad reputation online as a troublemaker.

He watched “himself” stand by coldly. Because of her behavior, he felt embarrassed and displeased and became even less willing to acknowledge her. He even began considering… finding a new heir.

In that version of him, “Jiang Qingli” was nothing more than a bloodline successor—never the beloved daughter she should have been. If the heir was unqualified, then she had to be replaced.

The logic was cruel.

Next, he saw “himself” take notice of another girl living in the same dorm during the show. A moment of pity led him to sponsor her, but after an accident, he developed feelings for her.

After Qingli left the show, he watched himself send her overseas. Then he saw himself continue to sponsor that other girl—Xu Shan—who was the same age as Qingli but far more quick-witted and impressive. And then… he saw himself fall for her.
