Chapter 251
Qingli was in the middle of discussing machine design options with the branch manager when she received the call.
Her phone suddenly rang. When she answered, it was Jiang Xi’s assistant on the other end.
“The boss was injured by Jiang Zheng and is unconscious!”
The assistant sounded panicked. After delivering the news, he abruptly ended the call. Even during the short conversation, Qingli could hear background noise—possibly from the scene, maybe even an ambulance.
Qingli stared at her phone and suddenly let out a laugh.
She hadn’t even made her move yet, and Jiang Zheng had already done her a favor?
The branch manager saw her reaction and smiled. “Something good happened?”
Qingli blinked. “Sort of.”
Jiang Xi getting hurt certainly wasn’t good news in a conventional sense.
She didn’t explain further. “Let’s stick with what we discussed earlier. I might be pretty busy in the coming days. If anything comes up, give me a call.”
“Absolutely.” The manager nodded repeatedly and personally saw her out.
Once back in his office, he looked at the steadily growing sales figures—nearly triple last quarter’s performance—and happily pulled out his phone, ready to calculate how much bonus and profit share he’d earn this month.
But just as he opened it, a news alert popped up on his screen:
Breaking: Violent altercation at Jiang Group. Chairman Jiang Xi is hospitalized after a serious head trauma, currently unconscious.
Wait—what?
This article was posted… 30 seconds ago?
That meant what Jiang Qingli had just received a call about… was this?
But wasn’t Jiang Xi her biological father? Why was she laughing like it was great news?
The branch manager’s body tensed.
The elite families are messy…
Forget it, forget it! He was just a poor wage slave. No business getting involved in this kind of drama.
Just let it go.

When Qingli arrived at the hospital, Jiang Zheng was still undergoing tests.
She had gotten there so quickly that even the assistant looked surprised. He adjusted his glasses and began explaining the situation:
“The boss was informing Jiang Zheng of the board’s disciplinary decision when Jiang Zheng exploded. No one saw it coming. The boss was hit in the head more than once. It looks pretty serious…”
Over an hour later, Jiang Xi was wheeled out from his examination. The doctor came to speak with the family. That’s when Qingli learned—it wasn’t just serious. It was very serious.
The occipital bone at the back of the head protects the cerebellum and brainstem—vital to life itself. (Thanks, Baidu.) A severe impact in that area can be fatal.
And Jiang Xi had been attacked by a grown man—his son—in a fit of rage. The force of the blows resulted in a moderate concussion, and his prognosis would depend on how he responded in the coming days.
A concussion of that level could lead to numerous complications—cognitive issues, memory loss, and more.
“How could this happen?” Grandpa Jiang’s eyes welled with tears as he stomped anxiously.
“Xi’er is the chairman! If something happens to him, what’ll happen to the company?!”
He was far too old and had been out of the business loop for years—there was no way he could take over again.
The doctor could only offer a helpless shrug. They could treat the patient—but not the company.
Just as Qingli was about to speak, Grandpa Jiang suddenly grabbed her hand.
“Let your cousin out of jail! We’re all family. The company needs him right now!”
Qingli pulled her hand away, expression cold.
“The doctor said my dad will wake up soon. If you want someone to talk to, go ask him if he’s willing to let Jiang Zheng go.”
“Grandpa, if you’re not going to help, you should head back. You’re not doing any good here.”
The assistant had already called the police right when the incident happened. Jiang Xi’s injuries were severe, and Jiang Zheng—the one responsible—had already been taken into custody.
“What’s that supposed to mean? You’re not even listening to your grandfather now?” Grandpa Jiang snapped.
Qingli brushed past him. “No, I’m not.”
She caught up with the doctors and asked about her father’s condition and how best to care for him before entering the hospital room.
The room was spacious and clean, furnished with a patient bed and a cot for overnight stays. Everything was a sterile white. Jiang Xi lay quietly in bed, his head wrapped in bandages, lips pale, brow furrowed—even in sleep, he looked uncomfortable.
Honestly, he looked a little pitiful like this.
But the moment she thought of the original Qingli, any sympathy disappeared.
Just as Grandpa Jiang, scowling, entered with the butler’s support, ready to voice his disapproval. His granddaughter had been so sweet before; how had one stint in a reformatory made her as cold and unfeeling as her father? The bitterness in his chest bubbled up into anger.
“Qingli! Look at yourself now—”
“If you want to talk, get out,” Qingli snapped coldly.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Jiang Xi’s eyelids flutter. She pointed at the door.
“My dad has a concussion. He needs rest, not noise. If you insist on disturbing him, I’ll have security escort you out!”
Grandpa Jiang’s face turned dark. But his concern for Jiang Xi kept him from arguing further. With a huff, he looked toward his son instead.
Just in time—Jiang Xi’s eyes opened.
“Xi’er!” Grandpa Jiang exclaimed joyfully. “You’re awake! Are you in pain?”
Jiang Xi opened his mouth to speak, but the moment he did, a wave of nausea hit him.
“Urgh—”
Qingli silently handed him a trash bin.
Grandpa Jiang hesitated and didn’t go forward. He wasn’t good at caregiving, and standing there would just be in the way.
Qingli, on the other hand, stepped up and helped—rinsing his mouth, wiping him down.
Once that was done, she helped him sit up a bit and tucked a pillow behind him for comfort.
