If she wanted to eat something, she had to cook it herself. She did her laundry, too. Only the baby’s clothes were handled by Shen Yanjun.
As for housework, aside from the once or twice a week when a cleaning lady came by, the rest was shared between Xu Yin and Shen’s mother—no slacking off allowed!
It had only been a few days, but Xu Yin was already at her limit. This was nothing like the wealthy housewife life she had imagined!
She was not someone who could endure poverty. After all the humiliation she endured from the Shen family, was this all she got in return—just being Shen Yanjun’s wife, and not the wife of a rich heir?
She had to be out of her mind!
Yes, she liked Shen Yanjun, and she had been terrified when he found out the truth about her. But that didn’t mean she was willing to suffer with him. Just like during the final semester of senior year, she had realized that because she was distracted by the relationship, her grades wouldn’t get her into a top university. Her family wasn’t well-off either, and her future looked bleak. So she chose to take the money and leave.
And now…
—
Shen Yanjun, still trying to salvage what remained of the Shen family business, had just rocked their son to sleep. He looked at the baby’s chubby little face and smiled in satisfaction. Even though he saw it every day, he still couldn’t get enough.
He had sacrificed so much for this child, which made him cherish him even more.
Two minutes later, he got up and walked to the wardrobe to grab a change of clothes.
But after just one glance, he turned to the woman sitting with her back to him, playing on her phone.
“When are you planning to leave?”
Xu Yin froze, the relaxed look on her face vanishing. She didn’t dare turn around, clutching her phone without moving a muscle.
Every time things got tough, she’d retreat into herself like a turtle hiding in its shell.
Shen Yanjun was used to it by now. He didn’t even get angry anymore.
He simply said calmly, “I won’t divorce you before the child turns eight. You might as well give up that idea. But if you want to leave, let me remind you—as a mother, if you disappear, I can report you to the police and have them find you. You can file for divorce, sure, but it’ll take time—at least two years of separation. Can you survive two years with your personality, no job, no income?”
Xu Yin sneered and curled her lip.
She could ask her parents for help. Back when she was still in the Shen household, she had given them plenty of money. Supporting her for two years wouldn’t be a problem. What, she couldn’t wait it out?
Then she heard Shen Yanjun say, “Your little brother’s in high school now, right? I hear your parents have high hopes for him. I’m guessing they wouldn’t want me dropping by to check in every other day.”
Xu Yin suddenly sat up, glaring at him furiously.
He was cutting off all her exits, one by one. In the Xu family, her younger brother was everything. He was still growing up, and they’d already bought him an apartment for when he got married and even saved up a dowry. They were counting on him to get into a top university, make a name for himself, and bring honor to the family.
Because they had a daughter who was a homewrecker, they were looked down upon by their relatives, even after they got rich. Her parents had always hoped their son could help them hold their heads high again.
They would never let her disrupt his studies!
Shen Yanjun calmly met her gaze. “I just want you to face reality. What? Upset? That’s exactly how I felt when I found out you’d been lying to me. But don’t get me wrong—I’m not trying to get revenge. You were the one who insisted on having this baby. I’ve already compromised so much for the sake of our child. You don’t get to be the exception.”
Xu Yin’s eyes turned red, stinging with both anger and humiliation. But deep down, she knew she had brought this on herself.
If she hadn’t been so greedy for the Shen family’s wealth, none of this would’ve happened.
She should’ve just listened to her parents and taken the money and left—anything would’ve been better than this.
Seeing that she finally understood, Shen Yanjun didn’t say another word and headed into the bathroom.
The sound of running water filled the room as Xu Yin quietly broke down in tears. For now, the household was stable.
But even someone like Shen Yanjun, who appeared calm on the surface, was struggling inside.
He was maintaining the marriage for the sake of their son.
The child was too young to lose his mother, and Shen Yanjun worried it would affect his emotional and mental development. That’s why he forced Xu Yin to stay.
But facing her every day, every time he looked at her face, he was reminded of all the foolish things he’d done. It tore him up inside.
Shen Yanjun didn’t want to face her. Even after finishing his shower, he would sit in the bathroom for a while until he felt sleepy enough to go straight to bed.
That night, when he finally took out his phone, he noticed a notification from a special contact he still hadn’t brought himself to unfollow. It was from Huo Qingli: “Get ready to welcome new life~ [photo]”
The image was an ultrasound.
A tiny little dot floated in the picture. On the report, the words “Pregnancy Term” jumped out at him, burning his eyes.
The comments were full of congratulations and playful teasing:
[“Damn, after a year, the rumor that Chi Yue isn’t ‘functional’ has finally been disproven!”]
[“LOL, the internet never forgets!”]
[“When is the goddess acting again? I miss her so much! I want to have a baby with her!”]
[“She’s mine!”]
Then, a new comment popped up:
[“Mine.”]
The fans were stunned for a second, then burst into laughter:
[“LOL, the brother-in-law has arrived! Everyone make way!”]
[“Bro-in-law, you’re too extra!”]
[“Come on, give us some content! You didn’t even post a pretty pic of her today. We’re starving over here!”]
Shen Yanjun’s vision blurred as he kept reading. He couldn’t bear to look anymore and quickly exited the app.
Every time he saw Huo Qingli looking so happy, his heart twisted with regret. Why couldn’t he have been a little smarter back then? Why did he make so many awful choices?
But there’s no such thing as a “regret pill” in this world. All he could do now was swallow the bitter consequences alone, over and over again.
It took a long time before he finally calmed down, opened the door, and stepped out.
The room was pitch dark. Using the light from his phone, he quietly climbed into bed. Eyes shut tight, he lay there with a full meter of space between him and the woman on the other side.
