That day, Shen Yanjun didn’t come home.
At first, no one thought much of it. It wasn’t until the next morning when Xu Yin came downstairs that Shen’s mother started to sense something was off.
“Where’s Yanjun?” she asked.
Xu Yin’s expression froze slightly, and she shook her head. “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? He’s your man and you don’t know?” Shen’s mother slammed the table and said coldly. Then, realizing something, she added, “So he didn’t come home last night? And he didn’t tell you where he went?”
Xu Yin slowly nodded and continued eating.
Even if she didn’t eat, the baby inside her still needed nourishment.
Shen’s mother glared at her, annoyed, but she couldn’t bring herself to stop her pregnant daughter-in-law from eating. So she picked up the phone and called Shen Yanjun.
No answer.
Now Shen’s mother finally realized something was wrong.
She didn’t know what had happened, but not being able to reach him, and him staying out all night without a word, especially while living at home, was deeply unsettling. She looked over at Shen’s father.
Shen’s father frowned. “He left work yesterday afternoon. None of his people know where he went. I thought maybe he wasn’t feeling well and came home early.”
Shen’s mother’s face changed. “Could something have happened? Should we call the police?”
Shen’s father immediately shook his head. “No way. If we call the cops, the stock price we just stabilized will tank again!”
That shut Shen’s mother up.
Still, considering Shen Yanjun was a grown man, it seemed unlikely that something serious could happen just from being gone a day. So, for the time being, they decided to wait.
Oddly enough, Xu Yin felt relieved.
But three days later, a call came from a police station in another city. They said Shen Yanjun had been targeted by a group of thugs. When the robbery failed, a fight broke out. Shen Yanjun ended up with two broken ribs and a fractured leg. He was being treated at a local hospital, and they needed his family to come.
Only then did Shen’s mother panic and rush over.
Shen’s father, still worried about the company and avoiding public attention, didn’t go.
Xu Yin, being pregnant, didn’t go either.
Still, once Shen Yanjun was transferred back to a hospital in their city, someone found out.
He’d been in the public eye a lot lately, trending on social media more than once, so people were paying close attention to him. Before long, word got out—and a trending topic appeared:
[#ShenYanjunBeatenAndHospitalized]
It was a juicy headline—just reading it made people want to click. A flood of users swarmed the topic. Soon, a sharp-eyed netizen commented:
[Wait a minute, isn’t this the guy who got beaten up by a bunch of thugs in our city?]
[No way—he was out of town? I thought he’d been with his “true love” side chick this whole time?]
[Holy crap, it is him! I remember thinking he looked familiar—kind of scruffy. Took a picture and sent it to a friend. We both thought it had to be fake. Guess not!]
[He looks ten years older. Did the Shen family go bankrupt or something?]
[Could be. Would explain why he’s in such bad shape…]
Before anyone had time to react, a second trending topic went up:
[#ShenGroupRumoredBankruptcy]
Now things blew up. Shen Group’s partners, shareholders, and stockholders all started panicking. Some dumped stock, others called nonstop to demand answers. Shen’s parents were overwhelmed and had no time to deal with Shen Yanjun, so they sent Xu Yin to take care of him.
But the moment Xu Yin entered the hospital room, the man who had been lying there calmly changed his expression instantly. He pointed at the door and said coldly, “Get out.”
Xu Yin pretended not to hear him and smiled. “I made some soup for you. The doctor said you haven’t been eating well these past couple of days. You need to build your strength—”
“I said, get out. Didn’t you hear me?!”
Seeing that she was still walking toward him, Shen Yanjun grabbed a pillow and threw it at her.
But he still held back—the pillow hit the floor, nowhere near her.
Xu Yin’s smile faltered. One hand pressed to her belly. Today, she’d worn a more form-fitting outfit on purpose, and her baby bump was just barely beginning to show.
She bit her lip. “Didn’t you say you’d never let your child be hurt?”
Shen Yanjun sneered. “I said I wouldn’t let the kid suffer. But he’s not even conscious right now! If you don’t leave, I will!”
He struggled to sit up.
His ribs still hurt, and the rest of his body was badly injured. The moment he moved, his face twisted in pain. Seeing how determined he was, Xu Yin’s heart clenched. Eyes red, she set down the thermos and turned to leave.
Behind her, Shen Yanjun’s harsh voice barked at the nurse:
“Throw that crap she brought away. It’s disgusting!”
He might never hit a woman, but when he truly hated someone, his words were like knives—each one stabbing straight into the heart.
Xu Yin couldn’t take it anymore. She broke down in tears and ran out.
Along the way, she passed quite a few patients and hospital staff.
Not two hours later, Weibo was buzzing with another update:
[#ShenHeirAndWifeRumoredBreakupDueToBankruptcy]
With some help from interested parties, netizens quickly came to believe that Shen Group’s downfall was inevitable.
And speaking of those interested parties, at that very moment, Chi’s father was placing a stack of documents in front of Qingli. With a probing look, he said, “This is my little ‘gift’ to Shen Group. Take a look—see what you think?”
Qingli flipped through the pages carefully. After going over the whole file, she pointed to a section and said, “Most of it looks solid. But this part still isn’t airtight. What if they don’t take the bait? We should add another card to the table—make Shen Group bleed a bit more. I have a plan that might work even better. Want to take a look?”
Chi’s father: “?!!”
