“You’re saying you want to run the company now?”
Feng Ying and Huo Changrong exchanged baffled looks. They had been so worried, and now they were facing such a calm and collected daughter that they were completely stunned.
Had the shock hit her that hard? She’d never been the type to take on thankless tasks, yet today she was volunteering for one.
Feng Ying was the first to come back to her senses. She comforted her daughter, “It’s okay. If you want a divorce, so be it. That’s his loss. Running a company is exhausting. You don’t need to do that. Just have your brother send you some money, and I’ll take you on a nice vacation. How about that?”
“Exactly!” Huo Changrong chimed in enthusiastically. “Yeah, let’s travel. It’s scorching hot here anyway. What about a trip down south to the coast, somewhere cooler?”
Qingli shook her head, firmly pressing, “Mom, Dad—are you giving it to me or not?”
“Alright, alright!” Feng Ying’s heart softened immediately, and she agreed on the spot, turning to her husband.
Huo Changrong winced internally. While the Huo family’s real assets weren’t in the entertainment industry, Tiansheng Entertainment had been his pet project to test the waters. Building it up had taken time, effort, and a good chunk of money. Now handing it over to a daughter who knew absolutely nothing about running it… it was like giving a painstakingly built sandcastle to the waves—gone in an instant.
But facing his wife’s insistent eyes and his daughter’s determined face, he still nodded. “Okay. I’ll start arranging things.”
Qingli had been watching them closely. Honestly, she’d always doubted whether the original version of her parents had truly loved her. Otherwise, how could they raise her with such a brainless parenting style?
Handing over a company, whether good or bad—it’s something she should’ve experienced first before making the decision. Yet since childhood, everything had been arranged for her. Whatever she wanted, she got. When she was little, she had her parents; growing up, she had her brother; after marriage, there was her husband.
She was never given a choice. A child, blank as a sheet of paper, had been stamped with the words “just be happy.” No effort was made to teach her survival skills or resilience—just blind indulgence.
And yet, as she looked at them now, she had to admit—they did care.
Huo Changrong’s nod sealed it: a company worth billions, just like that, was dropped into Qingli’s lap after a few words.
She sighed with a complicated expression, then smiled faintly. “Thanks, Mom. Thanks, Dad.”
“Aww.” Feng Ying and Huo Changrong were instantly beaming with joy from just that one line.
Feng Ying clutched her daughter’s hand tightly, watching her reaction. Seeing Qingli genuinely pleased about getting the company, she breathed a quiet sigh of relief and gently asked, “Since you’re going to run the company, you should at least learn the basics from your dad. Why don’t we head back home together today?”
Qingli smiled. “Sure.”
Now Feng Ying was completely at ease. Keeping her daughter close was best. That scumbag Shen Yanjun—back then, she only allowed the marriage because her daughter liked him and he seemed like a decent man.
Who would’ve thought the jerk would go and cheat?
As for the rumors about Shen Yanjun and Xu Yin having a history, that was conveniently ignored.
Her daughter and Shen Yanjun were married, not flirting! No matter how you looked at it, he was in the wrong.
Huo Changrong scratched his head. “I’ll go get the car. It’s way too hot out—you wait here in the shade.”
“Go on.” Feng Ying waved him off.
Huo Changrong left, turning back every few steps to look at his daughter.
Qingli turned on her phone—unsurprisingly, a flood of messages came crashing in. The phone was practically overheating from the notifications. Besides her parents, there were messages from her agent and from Huo Qingyu.
At the very top of the list: a call from Shen Yanjun’s mother.
She must’ve seen the news online. Shen’s mom had always liked the original Qingli—obedient, passive, and blindly in love with her son. What mother-in-law wouldn’t love that?
Right then, her phone rang again. It was Shen’s mom.
“Ah Li, why was your phone off all day?” Shen’s mother sounded a little annoyed. She’d been calling since the news hit the internet, and this was the first time her calls had been completely ignored.
But she still had to make the call. She didn’t want things between the two families to turn into open hostility.
Feng Ying’s face dropped the moment she heard Shen’s mother’s voice on the phone.
Qingli gave her a reassuring smile, then calmly answered, “Hello, Auntie.”
She didn’t respond to the earlier question, her tone noticeably colder than before.
Feng Ying was thrilled—so long as her daughter had the right attitude, she didn’t care how many times the Shen family called.
But the woman on the other end of the line didn’t feel the same.
Just hearing the word “Auntie” threw her. After a pause, she forced a laugh and said, “Oh my, what’s with this ‘Auntie’ talk all of a sudden? That’s not right. You know Yanjun’s going to say you’re being disrespectful.”
“He should be glad I’m being so polite,” Qingli replied, her voice laced with sarcasm. “I’ve already decided to divorce Shen Yanjun. Auntie, please don’t contact me again.”
“Wait!” Shen’s mother tried to respond.
But before she could say another word, the call ended.
Qingli’s stance was crystal clear.
Shen’s mother stared at the screen in disbelief, her face darkening. Shen’s father asked, “What happened? What did she say?”
“What could she say? Your son screwed up. Even someone like Qingli couldn’t take it anymore!” she snapped.
She might be biased toward her son, but a blatant affair still made her angry. How old was he now, acting so immature and making his parents clean up after him?
And the worst part was who he cheated with.
That woman had taken the money and left six years ago!
Shen’s father rubbed his nose and stayed silent. His brows furrowed deep with concern.
The Huo family wouldn’t let this go easily.
