“Cough, cough…” Madam Mu suddenly choked on her saliva, staring at her daughter in shock. “What did you just say?”
Qingli spoke softly, “Mother, I said I want to be widowed!”
“You’ve lost your mind!” Madam Mu hissed in a low voice.
Qingli countered, “Then what else should I do? Divorce? That’s too troublesome. Besides, I’d be the one suffering. I may not care, but Mother, why should I take the blame when it’s Xie Rongyun’s fault? If he dies, I’ll still have a good reputation. Why wouldn’t I choose that?”
The greatest grievance of the original owner of this body was that after her death, people called her jealous and bitter, blaming her for not leaving Xie’s family an heir. Meanwhile, the concubine-turned-second-wife whom Xie Rongyun later married was praised for being virtuous, treating even the children of previous concubines kindly, and bearing him many more.
So why should she go through the trouble of divorcing him?
She had a perfectly good “stud” right in front of her—Xie Rongyun and the five concubines, maybe even Mu Lan’er, making it six women. If they could give birth to three or four children, and then Xie Rongyun conveniently disappeared, she could raise the children and even keep a man around just to please herself.
Scheming within the household?
Impossible.
She had no rivalry with those women—only a cooperative relationship.
Sure, the kids would have Xie Rongyun’s blood, which was mildly annoying, but thinking about it, Xie Rongyun had a good-looking face. His character was trash, but the children wouldn’t be ugly. And she wasn’t the one giving birth anyway.
Once the children were born, the man would have served his purpose. Then she could even fulfill Mu Lan’er and Xie Rongyun’s so-called love story. The entire Xie family estate—well, that could just be her compensation for putting up with him.
Madam Mu was completely disoriented by her daughter’s words. All her previous thoughts had been overturned, leaving her mind blank. By the time she was sent back home, she had finally snapped out of it, clutching her chest in shock.
“Madam, what’s wrong?” Mu Laoye called out.
Madam Mu quickly shook her head, unwilling to let him know. “Nothing.”
“And our daughter…?” Mu Laoye, though he believed men taking concubines was normal, was still concerned about how their daughter was handling it.
Madam Mu smiled faintly. “She’s fine. She’s very clear-headed.”
So clear-headed that she’s planning to become a widow.
This move was brilliant.
At first, she had wanted to help her daughter retaliate against Mu Lan’er, but she didn’t even know where to start. If Mu Lan’er really ended up with Xie Rongyun, and Xie Rongyun later disappeared, then Mu Lan’er would still be left with nothing, while her daughter would have full control.
It truly was… a good strategy.
But when did her daughter start thinking like this? She used to love Xie Rongyun so much!

The Next Day
That night, Qingli had arranged for Concubine Xu to serve Xie Rongyun.
Xie Rongyun had hesitated and even came to subtly express his reluctance, but the moment Qingli tearfully mentioned the lack of an heir and how Xie Yuning would be upset, he fell silent and went as instructed.
But just like the previous night with Concubine Zhou, when Concubine Xu came to greet Qingli in the morning, she looked perfectly fine, with only a trace of sadness between her brows.
In other words, she had also not been touched.
Concubine Zhou had been watching in secret. Upon realizing this, she shook her head in regret, looking completely dejected.
The remaining three concubines were unaware of the truth and were instead filled with jealousy and heightened vigilance. Was this the beginning of a battle for favor? Concubine Zhou must be upset because Concubine Xu had been with the master last night!
Later, after the concubines left, Qi Yue couldn’t hold back any longer. “Madam, why won’t the master touch them? Concubine Zhou is charming and seductive, and Concubine Xu is gentle and elegant. It’s not like he’s incapable…”
“Could it be… because of Fifth Miss?”
She voiced the one possibility she dreaded most. After all, few men could truly restrain themselves for a woman, but what if? Especially since Mu Lan’er was conveniently staying in the estate.
Skipping one night might be understandable, but this was already the second night!
Qingli nodded affirmatively. “Yes, most likely.”
Qi Yue took a deep breath, staring at her in shock. “If he likes Fifth Miss that much, then why…?”
Qingli sneered. “It’s only because she’s out of reach that he seems so infatuated. If he truly loved her that much, why did he marry me for the Mu family’s support in the first place?”
Qi Yue pressed her lips together, looking toward the study with growing resentment.
People had pitied the Xie family when they fell from grace. Even without Xie Rongyun’s marriage to Mu Qingli, the Mu family would have still helped as much as they could—after all, the two families had always been close.
Yet, Xie Rongyun had still done this.
Just a simple proposal, and he had ruined Mu Qingli’s life.
If only he had treated Mu Qingli well, that would have been one thing.
But no—he was insatiable. And now, despite having everything, he still longed for another woman!
Qingli chuckled. “Don’t worry about it. He’s just selfish. It’s fine—he might be holding back now, but he won’t hold back forever.”
Qi Yue was puzzled but refrained from asking further when Qingli added, “Tonight, arrange for Concubine Wang to serve him.”
Still arranging them? Even after all this?
But seeing Qingli’s expression, Qi Yue swallowed her questions and did as told.
After four consecutive days, the concubines’ expressions began to change.
Finally, on the fifth day, Concubine Zhou couldn’t take it anymore. She pulled aside the gentlest-looking concubine, Concubine Xu, and asked, “The master didn’t touch you either, did he?!”
Concubine Xu’s face darkened. She was about to deny it, but suddenly realized something. She stared at Zhou intently. “Why are you asking this?”
How could she know such a humiliating thing?
Then, she remembered that on the first night, after serving the master, Concubine Zhou had seemed off when greeting the madam the next morning. At the time, she thought Zhou was just exhausted and had even felt envious. The second night, when the master didn’t touch her either, she had assumed he had been “worn out” by the previous night.
She hadn’t dared to think further.
Concubine Zhou shot her a knowing look and huffed, “The master didn’t touch me either. He just slept on the couch. I even tried to crawl into his bed, and he pushed me out!”
Concubine Xu’s face turned pale. Had they been bought out of servitude only to end up with a man who was… incapable? She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“Maybe he just doesn’t like us…” Concubine Xu clenched her teeth, unwilling to accept the truth. “After all, isn’t it said that the madam recently suffered a miscarriage?”
“Have you ever met a man who can hold out this long?” Concubine Zhou scoffed. “Fine. Let’s wait for the last one.”
By the end of the fifth day, when they saw Concubine Zheng wearing the same expression they had, their hearts completely sank.
That same day, when they went to greet Qingli, she smiled warmly.
“You’ve been in the estate for some time now. It must be stifling. There aren’t many strict rules here—we’re all family. The weather is nice today, so I’ve arranged for carriages. You can go out, relax, and visit your families. Consider it your return home.”
The concubines were overjoyed. “Thank you, Madam!”
