Her roommate nodded in agreement. “Good choice. You don’t even know how to enjoy yourself there. If someone takes advantage of you, you’d have no way to deal with it.”
She gave Qingli’s innocent-looking face a serious glance. Among the four girls in the dorm, Qingli was the youngest and the most soft-spoken. Naturally, the others felt protective of her.
“Exactly,” Qingli agreed, glancing at her phone. A message had come in, and after a few exchanges, the other party seemed very satisfied and scheduled a trial lesson. If successful, she could earn 200 yuan per session.
Considering the high cost of living in the first-tier city where Qingli’s university was located, the rate wasn’t very high. However, as it was her first time doing tutoring, the amount seemed fair.
She agreed to the terms and arranged for the trial the next day. After just one session, Qingli secured the job.
According to her schedule, she would tutor at least three times a week, with two sessions per visit. She could also take on additional hours when she was free. The more sessions she completed, the more she could earn. If the students’ grades improved, there were even bonuses. Payments would be made monthly.
After signing the contract, Qingli deeply appreciated the benefits of knowledge.
That evening, her boyfriend, who hadn’t contacted her all day, finally called. His unusually gentle tone made Qingli suspicious. Without hesitation, she said softly, “Let’s break up.”
At first, the boy protested, but seeing her determination, he angrily agreed. Before hanging up, he snapped, “You think I can’t find another girlfriend?”
Unbothered, Qingli ended the call herself.
The next day, she saw him walking past her classroom, arm draped around another girl.
Her roommates, who were in the same major and attended the same classes, recognized him and instinctively looked at Qingli.
Qingli smiled calmly. “We broke up.”
So composed?
Her three roommates exchanged glances, then secretly texted each other:
“Does anyone else feel like Qingli has changed a lot these past few days?”
“Totally! She’s become way more assertive!”
“Is this the power of heartbreak? Scary!”
“I think it’s good. She used to be too soft, always letting that guy lead her around. She’d cry whenever she was upset but never confronted him. Now she won’t get bullied anymore.”
“Exactly!”
After their brief discussion, the three girls gathered around Qingli, hooking arms with her. “Come on, breaking up is great. Freedom! Let’s celebrate!”
“Ah…” Qingli didn’t have time to refuse before being pulled away.
The four of them joked and played, and even Qingli, who was usually calm, couldn’t help but join in.
It felt so good.
Soon, October approached.
Worried about their daughter, Qingli’s parents called again. “Ahli, we’re going on a trip. Don’t come home, okay?”
“I know,” Qingli replied with a smile. “Stay safe during your trip!”
“We will, we will,” they reassured her, then asked as usual, “How’s school going?”
“Pretty good. Did you make plans for the trip?”
Hearing this question made her parents uneasy. They hadn’t made any plans—they weren’t going on vacation. Flustered, they brushed it off. “Don’t worry about it. We’re going with a group. Focus on your studies. Bye!”
After hanging up, they both sighed in relief. Qingli’s mother rubbed her swollen belly with a grimace. “How much longer do we have to keep this from Ahli?”
Qingli’s father comforted her. “Not long. The baby’s due in the winter. By then, even if she’s upset, what can she do?”
Left with no choice, Qingli’s mother nodded. But the guilt lingered, making her feel uneasy.
Late one night, just before October 1st, Qingli’s mother suddenly woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep after using the bathroom. Her husband’s loud snores made it worse, so she decided to scroll through her phone.
That’s when she heard the sound of a door creaking open.
Their house was old, and the door hinges were rusty, so opening the door made a distinct “creak.” Alarmed, Qingli’s mother quickly shook her husband awake. “Wake up! Someone’s in the house!”
Startled, Qingli’s father grabbed a belt for defense and cautiously approached the door.
Then, “click!” The living room light turned on. Through the crack in the door, they could see the light spilling into the bedroom.
The couple exchanged a look of disbelief. “Is the thief that bold nowadays?”
Tightening his grip on the belt, Qingli’s father opened the door, ready to confront whoever was outside.
Instead, he was greeted by the sight of his daughter, Qingli, holding a glass of water.
Their eyes met, and an awkward silence filled the room.
Qingli blinked innocently. “Dad, you didn’t go on your trip?”
Her mother, dressed in thin pajamas, came out, delighted to see her daughter. “Ahli?”
But this movement revealed her unmistakably pregnant belly.
Qingli’s expression grew even more innocent. “Mom, you didn’t go either? Is it because… you’re pregnant?”
Her parents: “…”
