Shen Ruxing chose a newly opened, internet-famous restaurant in the city center. It had just opened across from Xianghai and served fusion cuisine. Its beautiful decor, fresh ingredients, and reasonable prices had earned it a good reputation among young people, a restaurant that perfectly suited the consumption habits of a recent graduate like Shen Ruxing.
Shen Ruxing’s high-speed train arrived in Beijing at 5:30 pm, so they arranged to have dinner at 7 pm.
A little after 6 pm, Lin Qiao put on her makeup in the dormitory, donned her scarf, and left the campus.
Although it’s already spring, the sky is still overcast, the trees along the road are bare, and the bright sunshine during the day is rarely seen. The sunlight is lukewarm and doesn’t feel warm at all when it falls on you. At night, the temperature drops sharply, and the cold wind howls on your face, making you feel numb in no time.
Lin Qiao tightened her clothes and pulled her scarf up, revealing only her eyes.
“Valentine’s Day is such a great time for action, and yet I have to brave the cold to have dinner with your destined lover. What kind of situation is this?” Lin Qiao complained as she huddled in the cold wind.
“It would be so nice to be with you.”
Su Zhengxing, in her consciousness, was slightly taken aback.
“You want to be with me?”
“Of course.” Lin Qiao replied without hesitation.
“At least I have a car to ride with you! But you’re probably at home, comfortably swamped with heaters. Oh, no, maybe you’re working overtime at the office. After all, you don’t spend even a fraction of the time you spend at home. Anyway, you have heaters, unlike me, freezing like a dog.”
Realizing she was referring to him in reality, Su Zhengxing felt a sense of loss. He paused for a moment before asking the question that had been weighing on his mind for so long, “Do you like him?”
The man’s clear voice lingered in her ears. Under the orange streetlights, snow fell from the bare trees that were sprouting new buds. The fine snowflakes were swirled by the wind and danced in the light and shadow, just like Su Zhengxing’s mood at that moment.
“Does liking your money count as liking you?” Lin Qiao asked.
“Not me, but him.” He asked.
“Isn’t he you?” Lin Qiao replied matter-of-factly.
Su Zhengxing was silent for a moment, not asking any more questions.
Meanwhile, in reality, Su Zhengxing had been looking up at the neon sign ‘MEET’ on the downtown street. The pink light reflected on his face, casting a shadow on the other side. He let out a subtle sigh.
Forget it, he was already here.
“Hello, welcome. Do you have a reservation?” The waitress asked enthusiastically upon entering.
“No.” He replied.
“I’m sorry, Sir. All our tables in our restaurant have been reserved today, and it’s not possible to make a reservation in advance…” The waitress looked at him apologetically.
Su Zhengxing hadn’t come to eat in the first place, but upon hearing this, he paused, seemingly wanting to ask something. After thinking for a moment, he gave up and turned to leave.
Following Lin Qiao to the restaurant wasn’t part of his plan. He knew that his actions would only cause trouble for her, and he had no right to interfere with her private life.
Just as he was about to leave, the waitress answered a phone call and stopped him.
“Sir, a table just canceled their reservation. Their dining hours were from 7 to 8 pm. Do you still need any?”
