The busy day passed in a flash. When Su Bifang got off work, she had two sets of clothes in her hands. Her sister-in-law Zhu Zhenzhen, who was working nearby, finished earlier than her and was standing in front waiting for her.

 

“Zhenzhen, why don’t you go back first?” Su Bifang immediately came over and took her hand with concern. Zhu Zhenzhen had been tired and sleepy recently, and Li Xiuzhi forced her to see the village doctor, who said that she was pregnant. Her belly had swelled recently. Pei Naochun even took some corn to find the team leader and asked him to arrange a job for her that didn’t require bending over or exerting much effort. Su Bifang was not jealous, as her father-in-law did the same when she was pregnant. Zhu Zhenzhen’s work ended early, so she would usually go back first and pick up Pei Zhuyi from the neighbor’s house. The two of them had become sisters-in-law since then, helping each other without any grudges.

 

Zhu Xiuzhen smiled: “I can’t carry Zhuzi recently, and I can’t do anything if I go back early, so I might as well wait for you.” Zhuzi is Pei Zhuyi’s nickname. She saw the package Su Bifang was holding, “Does anyone want to mend clothes again?” With such a skill at home, everyone has benefited a lot. At least those who make shoes and sew clothes on weekdays never lack leftover fabrics.

 

“Yes, it will be troublesome again when I go back home tonight…” Su Bifang couldn’t help but lower her voice when she said this, for fear of being heard by others.

 

“Yeah, it’s a pity that we are both clumsy and don’t know those tricks.” The two looked at each other and sighed at the same time.

 

Sewing machines are easy to learn. Even a dumb person can learn a little after a while. But who in the village doesn’t know how to mend clothes? What makes their family famous is their various ingenuity. You can learn the skills, but you can’t learn the ingenuity.

 

The two of them quickly entered the house. The father-in-law was sitting in the main room holding Pei Zhuyi , who was probably just brought back from the neighbor’s house. He hummed a little tune and coaxed him to sleep. Pei Zhuyi looked a little sleepy, with tears in his eyes, and his little head nodded slowly, which made Zhu Xiuzhen and Su Bifang , who had just entered the room, tiptoe.

 

“Take him to the room to sleep.” After finally coaxing his grandson to sleep, Pei Naochun handed Pei Zhuyi to Su Bifang. Although the child was a crybaby, he was easy to coax.

 

“Yes.” Su Bifang responded and quickly sent the child in. After giving birth to Pei Zhuyi, she was really exhausted and didn’t want to have any more children. However, she was afraid of outsiders gossiping and making her parents-in-law unhappy. Just when she was struggling with this, her mother-in-law came to find her and spoke sternly, saying that she was not a sow and did not have to give birth. Su Bifang understood what her mother-in-law meant, so she felt relieved and took good care of Xiao Zhuzi.

 

Li Xiuzhi and Pei Naochun work closer to their home. In the past two years, there have been rumors outside, but they couldn’t feel it in the village. They only knew that many policies had been relaxed. The team leader went to the county to ask, and after getting a vague hint, he conveyed it to everyone. Since last year, every household in the village has started breeding, but on a small scale. For example, the Pei family only raised six chickens, ducks and a sow. Every time Pei Jianshe and Pei Jianlai got off work, they would go to the mountains to collect grass for the pigs and dig some insects to feed them.

 

“Dad, I’ll go help Mom cook first.” Su Bifang held down her brother’s wife and stopped her from moving. She quickly went to the kitchen to help her mother-in-law. This was the thing she was most grateful for when she came here. She also had sisters-in-law at home. Her mother always put all the cooking on them and had repeatedly educated her, telling her that things would be different after she got married and she had to work hard.

 

But it was different for the Pei family. Most of the work was left to Pei Jianshe and Pei Jianlai. The women didn’t get to do any physical work. Of course, they were supposed to do the rest of the detailed work, but who could blame them for not doing what they did? They only did cooking, cleaning, and washing.

 

“Mom, I can smell the fragrance from far away! What are we cooking tonight?” Su Bifang came close to Li Xiuzhi and smiled with her eyes narrowed.

 

“What can I cook? I just scrambled eggs, made fish soup, and two dishes.” Li Xiuzhi answered stiffly, but with a smile on her face, “I just cooked it casually.”

 

“What mom cooks casually tastes better than what we cook carefully! Zhenzhen and I always say that no matter how hard we try, we can never learn mom’s essence!” No matter how many times she tries, flattery never wears out, so Su Bifang immediately praised.

 

“This meat is delicious no matter how you cook it. You just need to learn more in the future.” Li Xiuzhi responded, her voice softened, “You try the taste.” She picked up a piece of meat from the fish gills and stuffed it into her daughter-in-law’s mouth. In fact, there was no need to taste it. How could she not know what it tasted like? But the daughter-in-law was a good person, unlike her stinky son! Li Xiuzhi was biased by habit, but she was biased towards her daughter-in-law, so Pei Naochun did not stop her.

 

Su Bifang immediately made an amazed expression: “Mom, the fish is cooked just right today, without any fishy smell! The soup later will be so delicious that it will make your mouth water.” In the past, she would make some for her brother and sister-in-law. Her husband valued his  two younger brothers, so she followed suit. But her brother and sister-in-law were pregnant and had been having a severe reaction recently. She didn’t dare ask her brother and sister-in-law to go into the kitchen, nor did she dare let her eat these.

 

“But Mom, I’m worried that my sister-in-law won’t be used to it,” she added.

 

“It’s okay.” Li Xiuzhi took out two clay pots from downstairs, “I’m going to ask my second aunt for some pickles to go with this to stop vomiting!”

 

“That’s good.” Su Bifang added, “I don’t know where Dad’s brain comes from. If he wasn’t smart, how could we eat so many fish!”
