Chapter 30: The Ancient Version of Werewolf (Part 1)

As Su Li finished speaking, two more figures walked in. It was Wang Bokao and Er Tong, who had finished feeding the pigs and watering the garden early in the morning.

Before leaving, they had made sure to stand in the small garden still kept in the Wang estate for a while to rid themselves of the smell of manure. Today, they wore new dark green clothes, giving them the look of a dashing young master.

Before even being seen, their voices were heard. Wang Bokao, still outside, was already calling out, “Xiao Lizi, this young master is here to take care of your business again. What game are we playing today?”

Su Li looked at him coldly, showing no intention of engaging.

But who was Wang Bokao? He had a thick skin, almost as thick as a city wall, so he didn’t mind Su Li’s little expression. He knew better than to care about her face—after all, it was more practical to check how many spikes were on a wolf’s fang than to try reading her face.

He quickly shut his fan and sat at the long table in the waiting area, casually patting Wu Ming’s head.

Su Li sighed deeply. This was a big client; she certainly couldn’t offend him.

“Let’s play a board game called ‘Werewolf’ first.”

“Not counting me, there are seven of us. I’ve prepared seven identity cards: two werewolves, one sage, one hunter, one apothecary, and two villagers.” (Some names were adjusted to fit the era.)

“The werewolves’ mission is to eliminate all the other players.”

“The hunter, sage, and apothecary are aligned with the villagers, the good side. If the hunter is killed or eliminated, they can retaliate by taking out a player they believe is a werewolf. The sage can predict whether a specific player is a werewolf. The apothecary can either save or kill someone. Villagers have no special abilities.”

“The goal of the good side, the villagers, is to identify all the werewolves and vote them out.”

After seeing everyone nod in understanding, Su Li stood up to act as the host. “Alright, now everyone, draw your identity cards randomly, and don’t show them to anyone else.”

One by one, they took their cards from Su Li.

Werewolves: Chunya and Wu Fei
Sage: Wang Bokao
Hunter: Zhao Si
Apothecary: Wu Ming
Villagers: Liu Tuhu and Er Tong

“Now, it’s night, so everyone close your eyes.”

With hearts racing, everyone closed their eyes, unsure of what would happen next. Liu Tuhu exaggerated his actions by leaning his head forward, occasionally twitching his big ears to catch every tiny sound.

Su Li watched Liu Tuhu’s movements with a helpless look but didn’t mind much. It was the first round of the game, after all, and it was important to let everyone play freely so they could feel the rules and truly enjoy the game. If she imposed too many rules right away, it wouldn’t be any fun at all.

She continued guiding them through the game. “Werewolf players, open your eyes and confirm each other’s identities.”

Chunya hesitantly opened her eyes. To be honest, she was a little nervous, but when she saw Wu Fei’s calm smile, she calmed down.

“Werewolves, decide which player to attack.”

“You can either choose to attack someone, skip killing, or kill yourself. Once you’ve decided, signal me with your answer.”

Chunya glanced at Wu Fei. Truth be told, she was more interested in script-killing games, which were more about performance and scaring people. This “Werewolf” game was her first time playing, and she was confused.

But if anyone understood the rules better, it was Chunya.

She subtly turned to look at Zhao Si sitting next to her, slightly lifting her chin.

As for not attacking anyone? Chunya immediately ruled that out. To guarantee her safety and earn rewards, she needed to be ruthless and eliminate others.

Wu Fei understood her meaning and agreed. The waiter in this shop was a formidable opponent, and they needed to deal with him first.

Su Li saw this and said, “Alright, please close your eyes, werewolf players.”

“Next, apothecary, open your eyes.”

Wu Ming heard his name and quickly raised his head, opening his big, misty eyes to look at Su Li. It made Su Li’s heart soften, but she remained firm. “Apothecary, you have one antidote and one poison. Someone has died,” she pointed at Zhao Si, “Will you save them or kill someone else?”

Wu Ming froze. What? Kill someone?

Thinking back to what the abbot and his seniors had said, he must be merciful and save people! He quickly raised his little hand and pointed at Zhao Si, eager to save him, nearly speaking the words aloud.

Being so young, Wu Ming’s gesture was noticed by Wu Fei sitting next to him, and Liu Tuhu, who had been listening attentively, also caught it.

Su Li nodded at Wu Ming. “Alright, apothecary, please close your eyes.”

“Next, sage, open your eyes.”

Hearing his identity called, Wang Bokao eagerly opened his eyes, nearly jumping up, his face twisted in excitement as he expressed his enthusiasm to Su Li.

“Sage, please select a player to predict. I will tell you if they belong to the werewolf or villager side.”

Wang Bokao’s eyes lit up, laughing to himself. He was the sage, after all, and now he had the power of prophecy! Who would dare challenge him?

He squinted and scanned the room, pointing his fan at Liu Tuhu.

Hmph, he hadn’t liked him yesterday, especially since Liu had played such a bad character. If it weren’t for his own brilliance, this criminal would’ve escaped justice.

Look at him, all those muscles and that dark look—not a good guy.

Su Li calmly gave him a thumbs-up. “Werewolf side, thumbs down. Villager side, thumbs up. Alright, sage, please close your eyes.”

Wang Bokao was shocked. What? This big guy was a villager?

He felt deflated and quickly closed his eyes. Ugh, this would be another intense battle. Those “friendly-looking” people could have dark hearts too! Wait until he, Wang Bokao, caught them all and scored big!

“Tremble, werewolves!”

“Alright, now everyone open your eyes,” Su Li smiled at them. “Congratulations, you’ve made it through a peaceful night.”

“Now, starting from my right, each of you will introduce your identity and speculate on who the werewolves are.”

“Each player has a small hourglass of time to speak. No one else can ask questions or interrupt. When the sand runs out, it’s the next person’s turn to speak.”

The first player on the right was Zhao Si. Poor him, not knowing how close he had come to death.

Zhao Si, being well-versed in-game rules from working with Su Li, started his turn. “I’m a good person, a model citizen, I didn’t open my eyes all night, so I know nothing.”

“But if I had to guess,” he narrowed his eyes, adopting Su Li’s confident tone, his gaze drifting between Liu Tuhu and Wang Bokao, “I think these two are good guys!”
