Chapter 116: Driving Off Zhang Ting — You’re Next, Wang Bokao
Zhang Ting flew into a rage, slamming her hand on the table and shooting to her feet.
“What the hell are you doing, you damn monk?!”
The two people behind her also glared at him furiously.
However, Wu Fei remained calm and composed, even looking rather aggrieved. “Dear benefactress, you and Prince Wang have dragged this battlefront too long. I’m a monk of salvation—I can’t cross battle lines. If I can’t break through from your side, how am I supposed to help you?”
Zhang Ting was momentarily speechless. That… sounded kind of reasonable?
Wu Fei continued, “Besides, instead of letting the ghost soldiers assimilate your troops, why not give me a portion of them so we can link up at the front line more easily?”
“We’re allies, after all. Do you think I’d harm you?”
“Once we eliminate the enemy, I’ll return all the soldiers to you. I can save souls, and naturally, I can release them back.”
“And even if you don’t want them back later, I guarantee I’ll support your development and help you build your army in peace!”
Wu Fei spoke with complete confidence. No matter how annoyed Zhang Ting was, all she could do was sit back down again.
Behind her, Xie Yanting snarled, “You’d better keep your word!”
Wu Fei gave a helpless smile. His turn ended, and now it was Wan Niang’s move.
Seeing Zhang Ting glance at her with a resentful expression, Wan Niang immediately thumped her chest and reassured her, “Don’t worry. All my archers are long-range. I won’t attack this round. Once it’s your turn, just clear a bit of the way and I’ll go after Prince Wang!”
As she spoke, she crammed all her units into the few front-line tiles—almost to the point of overcrowding.
Zhao Wen did the same.
Their actions made Zhang Ting doubt herself. Had she truly misjudged them?
She pressed her lips together and stayed silent, but her eyes locked fiercely on Wang Bokao.
Right now, the most important thing was to take him down, split the resources, and strengthen herself.
After all, she was the first to deploy troops. By the logic of the real world, she had the right to get first pick of the spoils—everyone else should just be along for the scraps.
Of course, Wang Bokao knew he was surrounded and under siege. Eyes reddened with anger, he felt true betrayal from just a game.
His kingdom was on the verge of collapse. If no one wanted to let him survive, then he’d take a piece of them with him!
Think you’ll win clean? Dream on!
He swore to make sure all four factions paid dearly.
With that conviction, he threw himself into battle with even more intensity—ghost soldiers assimilated, infantry slashed and hacked.
Because the front lines were mostly Zhang Ting’s forces, she lost nearly a fifth of her army in one round.
When her turn came, Zhang Ting struck back hard—charging at Wang Bokao’s position in a furious assault, leaving no survivors.
Her cavalry’s attacks wiped out everything in their path.
Very quickly, she reclaimed much of the territory Wang Bokao had previously held, as her repeated presence at the front lines began shifting the balance of power in her favor.
Of course, Zhang Ting didn’t forget to leave paths open for allied troops behind her—she wasn’t about to let Wu Fei’s antics cost her more soldiers.
But then, something completely unexpected happened.
Wu Fei let out a long, sorrowful sigh. “Benefactress, how can you be so cruel?”
“All this killing, all this vengeance—it never ends!”
“You could’ve just captured those soldiers and had them surrender. Their lives too, you know!”
“But look at what you’re doing now—slaughtering troops, seizing land from civilians, blood on your hands!”
“You! You!”
“My Compassionate Nation cannot be allies with someone as heartless and vicious as you.”
“Forgive me!”
As he spoke, all of Wu Fei’s Salvation Monks on the front lines took a step forward into Zhang Ting’s territory, converting her soldiers into his own.
Zhang Ting was dumbfounded. What the hell just happened?!
Before she could react, Wan Niang followed up, looking conflicted but resolute. “Girl, you… You’re just too ruthless!”
“I stand with the Compassionate Nation. I can’t let a woman this malicious take the throne!”
“Hand ‘em over!”
With that, she commanded her archers to unleash a storm of arrows on Zhang Ting’s troops.
Thanks to stockpiling soldiers in previous rounds, Wan Niang had a full force of archers ready at the front line, and this wave of attacks wiped out another huge chunk of Zhang Ting’s forces.
Together, Wu Fei and Wan Niang eliminated a third of what remained of her army.
And then… it was Zhao Wen’s turn to move.
He shook his head and simply sighed without saying a word—but his actions made his meaning crystal clear, as he immediately ordered his elephant cavalry to march straight into Zhang Ting’s territory.
This special unit had been mentioned before: large, slow-moving targets, but incredibly powerful. And right now? No one was attacking him anyway.
Faced with the wide-open borders of the Ayatsuya Kingdom, he seemed practically divinely guided. He charged in unopposed, wiping out nearly two-thirds of Zhang Ting’s remaining forces.
At this point, Zhang Ting’s presence on the map was pitiful—barely a handful of units, maybe enough to hold two or three towns at most.
The three turned to look at Wang Bokao, whose jaw was nearly dislocated from shock. “What are you waiting for? You still can’t tell who’s on whose side? Hurry up already!”
Wang Bokao was beyond the ability to think clearly.
You could say he wasn’t allied with Wu Fei and the others—after all, they were the loudest ones calling to attack him at the start.
But you could also say they were on the same team, because after so many rounds, not a single one of them had attacked him.
Lost and dazed, he simply followed instinct, sending his entire army to flood what remained of Zhang Ting’s country. (His ghost troops were still assimilating others, after all, so he still had plenty.)
Wang Bokao became the final straw that broke the camel’s back.
Zhang Ting’s Ayatsuya Kingdom was wiped off the map.
Not a single soldier left.
Even her main base was empty.
Her flag, once flying proudly, collapsed.
Zhang Ting stumbled to her feet, pointing wildly at the others. “You… you all!”
She trembled with fury, too choked up to speak.
Finally, she cast one last vicious glare at them and hissed through clenched teeth, “You’ll get what’s coming to you.”
“Let’s go!”
Xie Yanting and Zhou Jin, equally furious, stormed out after her.
If they still couldn’t see they’d been played, then all their years of living had been for nothing.
Hmph. Just wait.
…
With Zhang Ting’s trio gone, the game Warring States was once again down to its original four players.
Wang Bokao, still dazed, was just about to express his gratitude—when Wu Fei gave a cold, mocking laugh.
“Ghost soldiers?”
“The dead deserve peace. Their souls should be guided to the underworld. That is the natural order of things. But you-you’re using them to conquer and expand your territory.”
“That is a monstrous crime against heaven and earth.”
“I, of the Compassionate Nation, a monk of salvation, will redeem their souls and restore peace to the world.”
As he spoke, he once again deployed his Salvation Monks to begin purifying the ghost troops. And with the achievement points he had just earned, he exchanged them for a counter skill, meaning the ghost army now faced their natural nemesis.
Very quickly, over half of the Kingdom of the Gods was purified.
The battlefield felt empty, desolate.
