Chapter 106: The End of the First Minor Competition
Faced with the anger and outrage of the people, Zhao Wen’s hands were trembling. How could one man possibly bear the fury of the masses?
If this same scene had taken place ten years ago, how would the so-called Young Master of the Sun Family—the Prime Minister’s in-law—have handled it?
Zhao Wen had always excelled at stepping into another’s shoes. Back in Village Corpse, he had embraced the identity of a villager without hesitation, even using it to manipulate other players to achieve his ends.
Today, though he felt the same grief and rage as those around him, in this moment, he was the one playing the Young Master of the Sun Family. He forced himself to summon the arrogance befitting the role, making the performance as convincing as possible.
Facing the silent accusations of the crowd, his expression remained unchanged, cold and detached. With a wave of his hand, he barked, “Men! Arrest these unruly commoners and take them to the magistrate!”
About a dozen men dressed as guards emerged one by one from behind the Sun residence’s crimson gates, armed with batons. They stood behind Zhao Wen in formation. Following them came a masked man in ornate clothing and a frail-looking woman.
The two approached Zhao Wen, and the masked man patted him on the shoulder. “My son, step back. You’re not in good health. Go and rest.”
Zhao Wen disliked being called weak. Whether he meant it or not, he snorted heavily and brushed the man’s hand away, turning toward the mansion’s doors.
“Stop right there, you bastard!”
Out of nowhere, Liu the Butcher appeared and lunged at Zhao Wen, seizing him in one swift motion.
“You owe me my sister’s life!”
He raised a dagger, aiming to plunge it into Zhao Wen’s chest.
It all happened so fast that the audience didn’t even have time to react. Even the beautiful woman was frozen in place.
At the critical moment, the masked man stepped forward and grabbed the dagger mid-air, halting its deadly thrust just an inch from Zhao Wen’s chest.
“Do you even realize what you’re doing?” the man said angrily. That was his only son! How dare this man!
Liu the Butcher’s face twisted with rage. “Don’t worry. I’ll get to all of you. One by one.”
He yanked the dagger back and prepared to fight.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from behind the crowd. Song Da-dou and his team of constables arrived on the scene.
“By order of Minister Zhao of the Ministry of Justice, we are here to take the suspects into custody. All unrelated persons, step aside!”
The commoners gritted their teeth in silence. They saw these constables as nothing more than lackeys of the corrupt. They knew all too well what “taking suspects in for questioning” really meant—letting them walk free.
After years of oppression by the powerful, they had learned to swallow their suffering. But that didn’t mean they were blind to the truth.
Song Da-dou sighed helplessly at the tension in the air.
For a moment, the scene was deadlocked—constables, the Sun Family, the contestants, and the audience all frozen in a standoff.
Judge Su Li, still “invisible” among the panel, let out a helpless sigh. These people were too genuine! She respected that, but if this went on, the game couldn’t continue.
She had no choice. Su Li pulled out her trusty “ancestral treasure.”
“Everyone, please stay calm! This is a reenactment of a historical case. Everything is part of the script!”
“Actors, clear the scene! Let’s return to the main stage. The challenge is almost over!”
She had to shout this three or four times before the agitated crowd finally calmed down. People still muttered under their breath and rolled their eyes, but at least no one made a move.
Now that his actor status was revealed, Zhao Wen quickly shed the persona of the arrogant young master and reverted to his timid self, scurrying behind Song Da-dou for safety.
The masked man who had walked on with him, Gu Qing—found the situation rather amusing. But he kept his mask on, fearing someone would recognize him. Thinking of today’s script, he nearly slapped himself for real out of habit.
Back on the main stage, the ten contestants gathered again, full of righteous indignation and uncertainty, still anxious about whether the full truth had come to light.
Seeing this, the judges looked on with satisfaction.
Su Li resumed her role as host. “Congratulations to all the contestants. In the final moments, you nearly pieced together the murderer’s actions and the full timeline of the case.”
“On behalf of the innocent lives lost, I thank you.”
She bowed deeply. “Thank you for remembering their pain and suffering even after ten years. Thank you for pursuing the truth, even when you had no leads.”
When she finished speaking, Su Li remained silent for a full three minutes. The entire scene was still. No one said a word. They honored the dead with their silence.
“I won’t go into detail about the entire case again. Ten years ago, just like today, Yue Niang sacrificed herself in front of the Sun residence.”
“Just like today, the fury of the people was ignited. The Sun family and their servants were imprisoned, and after extensive investigation and interrogation, they confessed to all their crimes.”
“The Sun couple, desperate to save their only son from a chronic illness, sought a cruel and twisted remedy: eating human hearts. Sixty-eight innocent young girls lost their lives to their knives.”
“Moreover, countless witnesses were silenced—whole families slaughtered, not one survivor left behind.”
“It was the scholar Lang, Chun Ya, Yue Niang, Wan Niang, Liu the Butcher, and others who risked everything to provide evidence to the authorities and bring this darkness to light, preventing it from being covered up by those in power.”
“Ten years ago, their names were Feng Qin, Dong Xue, Shui Xian, Shao Yao, Chen Qilu…”
“To our heroes, to our martyrs—we shall never forget!”
As Su Li read out the real names of the righteous souls, the crowd was moved to tears. These brave souls who had died for truth and justice must be remembered.
Su Li gave them time to recover, then continued:
“The goal of this event, beyond selecting talent, was to remind everyone—”
“Fairness. Justice. Integrity. These are the values we uphold. No matter how many obstacles lie ahead, we will walk forward, carrying the laws of Great Yin and the compassion of the righteous.”
“To protect the people of Great Yin, and to preserve peace across our lands!”
Her words stirred everyone deeply. Contestant No. 8 clenched his fist and echoed her cry:
“With the laws of Great Yin, guided by justice and compassion, we march forward!
Protecting the people! Preserving peace!”
“With the laws of Great Yin, guided by justice and compassion, we march forward!
Protecting the people! Preserving peace!”
…
Their voices echoed through the streets of the southern district, over the capital city’s walls, and into every listener’s heart.
These very words would later become the oath sworn by all future contestants—engraved in the hearts of future officials as their guiding creed.
At that moment, Su Li had no idea just how deeply her impromptu speech—so natural to her from a past life—would impact those who heard it.
