After Saturday passed, it started to rain.
Fengguang hugged a pillow and curled up on the couch, watching TV out of boredom—the kids’ channel, of all things.
Outside, the sky was dull and gray, rain tapping endlessly against the windows. The gloomy weather drained her energy too. She slumped sideways and ended up resting her head on the shoulder of the man beside her, who was busy reviewing documents.
Ming’an opened one arm and naturally wrapped it around her waist. With his other hand, he casually flipped through the papers and asked out of habit, “Are you hungry?”
“No.” Even as she said that, she grabbed the hand resting on her waist and, out of boredom, left a small bite mark on his arm. Then she noticed the red phoenix on his skin—her family crest. Hugging his arm tighter, she broke into a silly smile.
His eyes remained on the documents, but a faint smile curved his lips as he said casually, “Once I finish handling these, I’ll keep you company.”
Even though Ming’an was a rather irresponsible, occasionally lazy principal, there were still necessary matters he had to deal with—for example, the recent incident where students from Division A had collectively lost control because of a girl named Zeng Xue.
Suddenly, Fengguang spotted the name Yan Bai on one of the documents in his hands. She sat up straight and pressed down on the paper he was about to turn. The file stated that the Hunters’ Association had requested to extract Yan Bai’s blood, and Ming’an had already written “Approved” on it.
She asked, “Why does the Hunters’ Association want Yan Bai’s blood?”
She thought of Yan Bai’s connection to Chu Xiao and wondered if the Hunters’ Association had discovered something—but that didn’t quite make sense. If they really had found out, Yan Bai should have been taken away by the Elders’ Council, not just subjected to a blood extraction.
Ming’an, however, focused on a different issue. “You seem pretty concerned about him.”
If it were just an ordinary classmate concern, how could that be? She had barely stayed in the student dorms and hadn’t even attended a full day of classes—there was no way she’d developed any real classmate bond.
Fengguang replied openly, “Did you forget? Last time you punished me by making me clean the entire academic building, Yan Bai was punished with me. We went through that together—of course I’d be concerned.”
It was that very punishment that had caused her to have a bit of an emotional breakdown afterward, which led him to take her to a bar for a big meal—and it was also when he had tasted her lips for the first time.
Thinking back to that sweet first kiss, Ming’an set the documents aside, pressed her down onto the couch, and kissed her deeply again. Only when she was out of breath did he pull back, chuckling. “Back then, I paired you with Yan Bai because I knew what he was capable of—and because he’s an especially obedient kid. As for you, Miss Princess here, I figured you’d never want to deal with something as troublesome as cleaning. Besides, your status is higher than his. All you’d have to do is give an order, and he’d finish everything himself. What I didn’t expect…”
…was that she hadn’t ordered Yan Bai around at all. Instead, insisting on fairness, she had personally taken responsibility for cleaning half the building herself.
Only then did Fengguang realize what he had been thinking at the time. She pondered it for a moment, then something clicked—if he had already been trying to protect her back then, didn’t that mean…
She kissed his chin. “You liked me even back then, didn’t you?”
