Fengguang froze for a moment. “My dad’s classmate? Then wouldn’t that make you…?”
“I’m not a vampire,” he said. “I’m human.”
Her father had studied at Osiris more than three hundred years ago. Yet this man looked remarkably young. She blurted out without thinking, “How could a human live for more than three hundred years?”
“That’s because I’ve killed too many vampires…” The corners of his lips curved into a faintly beautiful smile. Even his normally lazy eyes seemed to darken, and a chill seemed to stir the air around them. He spoke softly, “Their blood stained me again and again, and without realizing it, it assimilated my own blood. Or you could say… I’m a vampire who hunts vampires.”
Such a thing wasn’t impossible.
A vampire’s blood isn’t like human blood. Even after leaving the body, it remains active for a period of time. Normally, even if it seeps into human skin, the body’s blood cells would devour it, causing no real effect—unless, in a very short span of time, someone slaughtered far too many vampires. If the blood on their hands became too much for the body to process, a phenomenon known as “assimilation” could occur.
Fengguang had only ever heard her father mention this in passing. She had never seen an actual example, nor read about one in any book, so she had always thought it was just a story.
Ordinarily, for a human to become a vampire, they must drink a vampire’s blood—and even then, the transformed human would exist as a servant, unable to resist the commands of the vampire who turned them. But this man… this man had been assimilated by the blood of countless vampires. That meant he existed as an independent being, not as anyone’s servant.
It was the first time Fengguang had ever seen such a living example. She took a long while to process it. When she finally snapped back to her senses, the oppressive, deathly aura he had just released was gone, replaced once more by his familiar, lazy and unrestrained demeanor.
She stared at him for a long moment, then suddenly reached out and pinched his cheek.
He sighed. “My dear young lady, what are you doing?”
“It’s warm!” Fengguang exclaimed. She had been sitting on the ground, but now she scooted back toward him again, inch by inch. She rolled up her sleeve and said in amazement, “Look—my skin is cold! You say you’re a vampire, but you’re warm. Ah! I haven’t touched someone this warm in so many years!”
Ming An glanced at her pale forearm, briefly wondering whether he should touch it himself to check. Before he could decide, his hand was grabbed.
Fengguang looked at him with sparkling eyes. “Since you’re my dad’s classmate, that makes you my uncle. Don’t worry—I’ll be very filial to you.”
No… he didn’t need her filial piety.
He looked down at the hand she was holding and thought to himself that the girl was probably just fascinated by the novelty of a “vampire” with body heat, which was why she was trying to cozy up to him.
Indeed, for more than a decade, Fengguang had lived within a vampire family. She had almost forgotten what real humans felt like. Although some of her habits were still human, there were certain traits she couldn’t change—for instance, she found the smell of blood sweet, and her skin was cold to the touch.
