In the end, it was Fengguang who broke the silence. She had never seen Song Wuxia like this before, so she stammered nervously, “S-Song… Song Wuxia… why are you here?”
Because Bingqing had made it clear she wouldn’t hurt her, Fengguang had been surprisingly at ease as a hostage. But the instant he appeared, that ease vanished completely, replaced by tension.
The key point was—she didn’t even know why she was so nervous.
Song Wuxia didn’t look at Fengguang at all. He said coldly to Bingqing, “Don’t make me repeat myself.”
Bingqing stood frozen for a long moment, unable to react. This was the first time she had ever seen Song Wuxia like this—not the man who smiled at her and praised her music, but someone who looked at her with icy detachment, as if she had committed an unforgivable crime.
She spoke blankly, “Brother Song…”
In an instant, a dark wind seemed to rise.
In the blink of an eye, there was suddenly another man beside Fengguang—and Bingqing was already suspended in midair, her feet off the ground, her throat clutched tightly in his hand.
“Br-Brother Song…” Bingqing’s white veil had fallen away, revealing her delicate features. Both hands clawed at the grip around her neck; her voice came in broken gasps, her expression twisted in pain, disbelief filling her eyes.
Song Wuxia gave a soft laugh. “Bingqing, you’ve become disobedient.”
Terror flooded Bingqing’s widened eyes. A trembling voice squeezed out from her pale lips. “Bingqing was wrong…”
The sight was harrowing. Bingqing’s slender neck looked as though it could snap with the slightest pressure. Fengguang hurried forward and grabbed Song Wuxia’s arm. “Song Wuxia, don’t act rashly. They say when husband and wife argue—”
“Hm?” He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. The faint rise at the end of his tone carried a barely perceptible threat.
Fengguang shuddered and very unheroically changed her tune. “This involves a human life—don’t act on impulse. Stay calm. Come on, take a deep breath with me. Calm down…”
As she spoke, she actually took several deep breaths.
Song Wuxia nearly blurted out Are you stupid? Couldn’t she see he was standing up for her?
Still, her anxious little display was oddly amusing. Raising an eyebrow, Song Wuxia released his grip on Bingqing’s neck. With no support, Bingqing collapsed to the ground. He didn’t spare her another glance. Instead, following the hand that was gripping his arm, he closed his fingers around Fengguang’s slender, pale wrist and gave a light tug, forcing her to rise onto her toes and look up at him.
He leaned down slightly, and the distance between them shrank to almost nothing.
“The Crown Princess doesn’t want me to kill anyone?”
“Yes…” Fengguang’s heart began to race for no reason at all, her cheeks flushing faintly. “Song Wuxia, I hope that… if killing can be avoided, then it should be.”
“Oh?” Song Wuxia said. “And if someone were to threaten the Crown Princess’s life—would you still be so kindhearted?”
There was no denying it—he was annoyed. It felt like he was backing her up, only for her to insist on smoothing things over, and that displeased him greatly.
When Lord Song got angry, the consequences were serious.
Fengguang hurriedly put on a flattering smile. “But you’re here, aren’t you? How could I possibly be in danger? And if someone really did threaten my life, I’d be the first to raise my hand and fully support Lord Song in dealing with them severely!”
Her first sentence successfully pleased him. Song Wuxia smiled faintly. “So the Crown Princess isn’t completely beyond saving after all.”
