Silence spread through the air.

Yi Ren was the first to break under the suffocating atmosphere. Lowering her head, she said, “After the Crown Princess went to see His Majesty, she didn’t return for a long time. His Highness was very worried, so he came out to look for you.”

“I just got lost and wandered a bit too far,” Feng Guang said lightly. Her tone was calm, without any noticeable emotion.

But it sounded different to Yi Ren. To her, it felt like Feng Guang was suppressing her anger and pretending to be normal. Her heart grew even more uneasy. “Crown Princess… should we return to the Eastern Palace now?”

Feng Guang didn’t answer right away. She looked at Baili Mo instead. “Your Highness, if you still have something to take care of… I can go back by myself.”

What she really meant was: Don’t worry, I won’t interrupt your time together.

But to Yi Ren’s ears, this sounded like the Crown Princess was sulking at the Crown Prince. A lowly palace maid like her couldn’t afford to carry that burden. She lowered her head even more respectfully and said, “His Highness came out solely to look for the Crown Princess. Now that he’s found you, I suppose he has no other urgent matters…”

“Is that so?” Feng Guang cut her off and looked straight at Baili Mo. “You really… don’t have anything else you need to take care of?”

She asked very seriously. Truly—she didn’t mind if he stayed outside to build a relationship with this maid. After all, theirs was a political marriage with no emotional foundation. It was only natural that he might like another woman.

She got angry. “Why not?”

Only after doing all that did she realize her reaction had been far too obvious.
