About a quarter of an hour later, Wu Qi arrived at the house where he used to live, escorted by the constables. The ten-year-old boy paused for only a moment when he saw Fengguang being held in Shu Feng’s arms. Surprise flickered across his face—but it quickly faded, and he bowed politely to Shu Qiu.

“Lord Shu.”

“Ah, Wu Qi, good—you’re here.” Shu Qiu scratched his head, struggling to find the right words to begin.

Fengguang, realizing that she was still being held in the man’s arms, blushed faintly and whispered, “Put me down.”

As for why she had suddenly fallen asleep and ended up being carried, she didn’t have the energy to think about it now.

Shu Feng leaned close to her ear and, matching her quiet tone, murmured, “Is it really so bad that I’m holding you?”

“I don’t need that,” she huffed, turning her head away—but the tips of her ears were burning red, and unfortunately for her, he noticed.

Meanwhile, Shu Qiu seemed to have settled on what to say. He asked in a careful tone, “Wu Qi, did you know your house has a secret cellar?”

Wu Qi’s expression changed instantly. He lowered his head, his voice trembling with fear. “Yes… My mother said that when my father was still alive, it was just a storage cellar for keeping vegetables fresh, so they could be sold later for a good price when they were out of season. But after my father passed away, the cellar was abandoned. That’s what my mother told me.”

“So, you’ve never gone down there yourself?”

“No.” Wu Qi hesitated, then added softly, “But… sometimes, I saw my mother go there.”

Shu Qiu pressed, “Do you know what she was doing inside?”

“I… I…” The boy couldn’t get the words out.

“Yes, sir.” Wu Qi lowered his gaze and whispered, “Mother never let me go near the cellar. She wouldn’t tell me what she did there. But I was curious… so one day, I peeked. I saw… Lord Shu, I was so scared. I didn’t know what to do…”

His small voice broke with tears, trembling with guilt and fear—it was heartbreaking to hear.

Fengguang turned to Shu Feng beside her. “What’s in the cellar?”

“That’s not something Fengguang needs to know.”

She frowned, his silence confirming her worst suspicion. “Don’t tell me it’s… it’s—”

Shu Feng took her hand and placed a piece of candy in her palm. “These are things you don’t have to worry about. I brought sweets with me today—would you like one?”

“…Yes.” She clenched the candy tightly and moved closer to him, gripping the edge of his sleeve as if to steady herself, trying her best not to picture what she already feared.

Shu Qiu sighed. “I know you’re still a child, and seeing something like that must have been terrifying. But… there weren’t just one or two bodies.”
