When Feng Guang got home, she had to listen to her father, Xia Chao, lecture her for half an hour straight.

He went on and on about how unsafe things were outside lately, how she shouldn’t be running around, and so on.

When he saw that she was completely unfazed, he finally snapped, “Did you even understand a word I just said?”

“I did,” she said with a lazy nod.

“Oh, really? Then tell me—what exactly did you understand?”

“Shu Feng isn’t like the rumors say. He’s not some ghostly white-haired monster. He’s handsome and gentle.”

She was clearly dodging the point, but instead of getting angrier, Xia Chao just sighed after a long silence.

“Dad? What’s wrong?” Feng Guang asked, puzzled.

He looked at her for a moment, hesitating, before finally saying, “Feng Guang, don’t get too close to him…”

“Why not?”

“Because your father’s jealous of how good-looking he is,” came a teasing voice from the doorway.

A beautiful woman walked into the hall carrying a fruit platter. She shot Xia Chao a single glance, and whatever protest he’d been about to make died instantly—like all the strength had left his body.

“Mom!” Feng Guang said happily.

“Feng Guang, come have some fruit,” Wang Ci said warmly, crouching down and handing her the platter. Her smile was radiant and elegant. “Don’t listen to your father’s nagging. Go wherever you want to have fun. No one’s going to blame you.”

“Okay!” Feng Guang grinned smugly at Xia Chao, grabbed the fruit, and ran out of the hall.

Wang Ci stood up, cupped her cheeks, and sighed dreamily. “My daughter is just too adorable!”

“Is she even your daughter?” Xia Chao muttered under his breath.

Wang Ci kicked him sharply in the leg and huffed, “At least right now she’s mine. What, do you have a problem with that?”

“No, no problem at all,” Xia Chao said quickly, smiling sheepishly.

Meanwhile, Feng Guang happily munched on her fruit as she made her way back to her courtyard.

Lianzi followed quietly behind her, not daring to say a word. Normally, her young mistress was never this quiet—she always had something to chatter about. The sudden silence made Feng Guang feel a bit uneasy.

She turned her head. “Lianzi, what’s wrong with you?”

“Miss… aren’t you still mad at me?” Lianzi asked timidly.

When Feng Guang had entered Linglong Manor earlier, Lianzi had stayed behind and run back to the Xia residence to report what happened instead of following her in. She’d been feeling guilty about it ever since.

“Why would I be mad at you?” Feng Guang said cheerfully. “You brought my father to find me, didn’t you?”

Lianzi was just a young girl—being scared and running away was completely normal.

Tears welled up in Lianzi’s eyes. “Miss, you’re so kind! I promise, from now on, no matter where you go, I’ll always stay by your side!”

“Don’t!” Feng Guang waved her hands in panic. “Please don’t stick to me like glue every day! Let’s give each other a little personal space, okay?”

“But… but I’m your personal maid,” Lianzi protested.

“Well, what if I get married and have kids one day—and you get married and have kids too? You’re not planning to still follow me around then, are you?”

“Of course not.”

Feng Guang let out a sigh of relief.

Then Lianzi lowered her voice mysteriously. “Miss would never marry anyone else or have children.”

Feng Guang blinked. Lianzi’s voice was too quiet; she only caught a few words. “What did you just say?”

“I said Miss would never abandon Lianzi!” the little maid cried, eyes welling up again.

Feng Guang pressed a hand to her forehead and let out a long, weary sigh.
