When he looked at her with such gentle eyes, Feng Guang suddenly felt flustered. She fidgeted a little, took a few hesitant steps forward into the pavilion, and pointed at the cat in his arms. “That’s my cat.”

“Is it?” The man’s slender, graceful hand slowly brushed the soft fur along the cat’s back. His voice was light, warm. “Your cat is very cute—just like you.”

Her face flushed instantly. Watching the way he gently stroked the cat, she felt as if his gaze passed through the animal and landed directly on her. She had never met a man more refined, more picturesque—someone who embodied every kind of beauty she could imagine. Her heart suddenly began to race.

She raised a hand and pressed it to her chest.

“What’s wrong?” he asked softly.

“My heart…” she murmured dazedly, “it’s beating so fast.”

“Does it hurt?”

“No…” she whispered. In truth, it felt nice—an unfamiliar rush, like the joy of finding her little cat again when she thought it was lost forever. She sat down across from him, unable to hide her curiosity. “Are you the master of this place?”

“I am.” He smiled faintly. “And you’re the young lady of the Xia family.”

“You know me?” she asked in surprise. She’d heard he rarely left his residence.

“When you passed by the gates before, I happened to see you once,” he said. “Miss Xia leaves quite an impression.”

“I’m not a child,” she pouted.

He chuckled. “Miss Xia isn’t a child—just still young, that’s all.”

It didn’t sound much different from calling her a child, but coming from him, it didn’t feel teasing—it felt sincere.

Feng Guang decided to let it go and turned her attention back to the cat. Her little Xiuqiu was comfortably sprawled across his lap, nearly asleep. For the first time, she felt a flicker of jealousy. If she were a cat, maybe she could enjoy that same warmth too.

She muttered under her breath, “You silly, faithless thing.”

“They say pets resemble their owners,” he remarked lightly.

Her eyes widened. “Are you calling me silly too?”

“I’m saying…” His fingers continued to gently rub the cat’s ear, earning a soft purr. His voice lowered with a quiet laugh. “That both you and this little cat are… very endearing.”

That only made her blush harder. She covered her face with both hands. “Don’t talk to me like that—you’re too gentle. I’ll get shy.”

“It’s difficult,” he replied with mock seriousness, “to speak coldly to someone as lovely as Miss Xia. But if that’s your wish, I’ll try my best.”

She peeked at him through the gap between her fingers and saw that he was still smiling, calm and kind as ever. He was teasing her—she was sure of it. Dropping her hands, she huffed, “Don’t think you can just flirt with me because you’re handsome.”

He tilted his head slightly, pretending to ponder. “So being handsome doesn’t grant me any special privileges in Miss Xia’s eyes?”

“Of course not!” she said earnestly, shaking her head. “Just because you’re good-looking doesn’t mean you can toy with me. There are plenty of handsome people in this world—if they all acted like you, I’d lose face as the Xia family’s young lady.”
