“I don’t believe it… Daddy just doesn’t like me… He doesn’t like me, and you don’t like me either… I’m just a child nobody wants!”
Though Xiaoxiao had been cared for all these years, the absence of her parents had left deep, irreparable wounds. It made her insecure, unsure of herself, and always lacking a sense of safety.
When Suva appeared before her, she had naively thought she finally had a father who would love her. But the words he said today completely shattered that hope.
Suva stood there in the night, his lips curved in their usual gentle smile. He said softly, “Xiaoxiao, you need to understand—I’ll dote on you, I’ll spoil you, but only because you’re Fengguang’s daughter. That means you must never make your mother sad. Otherwise… you’ll lose the only reason you exist.”
The young girl was terrified. She just stood there, frozen, unable to make a sound for the longest time.
After saying this, Suva even took her hand, his voice still carrying the tone of a tender father. “Xiaoxiao must behave. That’s the only way you’ll get to live a little longer.”
Xiaoxiao had never been this afraid before. This was her father—yet she didn’t want this kind of father…
Fengguang pulled the child into her arms and held her tightly. “Xiaoxiao, listen to me. I never wanted to give you up. I couldn’t take you back to the Heavenly Realm, so I left you in the human world to protect you. My memories have been slipping away bit by bit, but ever since I found out you existed, I’ve fought with everything I have to find you. And look—I’ve found you now, haven’t I?”
“Was it… because of Daddy…?” Xiaoxiao sobbed so hard she could barely speak. “Because Daddy didn’t want to see me… so you… so you had no choice but to leave me behind…”
“No, your father loves you very much too.” Fengguang pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped away her daughter’s tears. Her voice was soft as she said, “The reason I didn’t bring you back to the Heavenly Realm is because there’s a powerful demon causing chaos there. Until that demon is sealed away, I didn’t dare bring you, because it’s too dangerous. And our Xiaoxiao is still little, still too small to fight a demon, isn’t that right?”
The little girl stammered through her sobs, “R-really… really?”
“Of course it’s true,” Fengguang told a bold lie—though it was only half a lie. There really was a great demon in the Heavenly Realm. His name was Suva.
“But… but Daddy said…”
“Your father was just angry.” Fengguang explained quickly, “He thought you weren’t treating me well, so he said those things just to upset you. Xiaoxiao is a smart girl—you know those words weren’t true, don’t you?”
Still hiccupping with tears, Xiaoxiao looked uncertain, clearly not fully convinced.
Just then, Suva finally walked out of the tavern.
Fengguang immediately said to her daughter, “If you don’t believe me, let’s ask your father. Let’s ask him if he loves you. All right?”
Suva came over, raising a brow. The usually refined and elegant man suddenly seemed roguish with that little gesture, even charming in a careless way.
Xiaoxiao tilted her head to look at him, her eyes swimming with tears as she waited for his answer. Fengguang, meanwhile, shot him a fierce glare that practically screamed, If you don’t answer this properly, we’re going to have a problem.
Suva chuckled softly, then crouched down. With a gentle hand, he patted Xiaoxiao’s head and slowly said, “Other than your mother, I will never love anyone else.”
Xiaoxiao froze. Her tears stopped for an instant—then her shoulders began to shake, and she let out a wail, crying even harder than before.
