After giving his hasty consent, Zhongran began plotting to get rid of Jian An. Things unfolded just as he had predicted—except for one variable he hadn’t accounted for: Feng Guang.
When she realized he intended to strike at Jian An and Liuli, she rushed to stop Liuli from ripping out her own heart to save him. But she arrived a step too late. Jian An still died.
That baffled Zhongran. He stared at Feng Guang, his expression unreadable.
“Feng Guang… why would you ruin my plan? If it had succeeded, you could have lived with me forever. Isn’t that a good thing?”
“No, it’s not!” Feng Guang didn’t like Liuli, but her basic sense of right and wrong told her she could never live with herself if she feasted on another person’s heart. And more than that… the very idea of so-called immortality repulsed her to her core.
But Zhongran couldn’t understand. To him, if she liked him, then no matter what he did—or why—she should accept it. After all, wasn’t everything he did for her?
“For me?” Feng Guang let out a sharp laugh. “More like for yourself. Zhongran, I don’t know exactly what you are, but one thing’s clear—you’re desperately lonely. You say you’ve already gained immortality, so you must have lived alone for a very long time. You’re just looking for someone to keep you company through eternity, that’s all.”
“I do like you…” he muttered.
“No, you don’t.” Her words cut clean through his protest. “If you really liked me, you wouldn’t do things that disgust me. You wouldn’t ask me to eat someone’s heart. What do you take me for—some kind of savage?!” The thought of it made her recoil with instinctive revulsion. And more than that, she hated his utter disregard for life itself.
“Feng Guang, I want you to live forever with me.”
“I refuse!” Liuli was terrified, but Feng Guang—wherever she found the courage—stood her ground, matching him without flinching. “You don’t love me. You just think I’m a little more acceptable than your other options, so you chose me. Isn’t that right? But what happens the day I stop amusing you? You’ll rip out my heart, too, and hand it to someone else without a second thought. Am I wrong?”
Zhongran fell silent. For the first time, he wondered if she was right—if she really was just one of his many choices. If the day came when she no longer interested him, would he discard her and pick someone else?
He had no answer.
Feng Guang didn’t wait for one. She gave a cold, bitter laugh. “I knew it. If I really accepted immortality, I’d just be another plaything to you. My only value would be to fill the time, to keep you entertained until you found your next toy. Zhongran, what gives you the right to ask me to spend eternity with you?”
Zhongran’s eyes darkened. “If you don’t want to live forever… then are you willing to die?”
Liuli finally couldn’t stay silent. “Zhongran, you can’t hurt her!”
Zhongran raised his hand lightly, and Liuli’s voice was instantly silenced. His gaze locked on Feng Guang.
“Will you choose death?”
“You want me to die?” Her voice was calm—so calm it startled even her.
