Ji Mian, seeing that he wasn’t guessing, lost interest and put away his smile. Instead, he opened the box. Inside were several white rats, though they were noticeably larger than normal rats. He set the box down, and the rats immediately scrambled out, gathering around Li Bai.

Patiently, Ji Mian explained, “These rats are drawn to the scent of pheromones. They’ll stay wherever the scent is strongest, so they like being around you, Mr. Li.”

Li Bai could feel the rats crawling all over him. He was terrified but didn’t dare move an inch.

“Don’t worry, Mr. Li,” Ji Mian said calmly. “They’re not hungry yet so they won’t bite—at least for now.”

But what about when they do get hungry?

“If they get hungry, they’ll probably start by biting your hands,” Ji Mian said sympathetically, his tone almost pitying. “By then, Mr. Li, you probably won’t even have the strength to scream.”

“Please… let me go…” Li Bai’s voice was barely louder than a whisper. He begged, “I know I was wrong… I’ll apologize to Xia Fengguang…”

“Apologize?” Ji Mian echoed, as if considering it seriously for a moment. But then he smiled and said, “You think you’re qualified to even see Fengguang? Oh, right, I almost forgot—”

Ji Mian bent down and picked up a syringe from the ground. Li Bai’s body trembled as he stammered, “W-What are you trying to do?”

“No need to be afraid, Mr. Li. I studied medicine,” Ji Mian said, lifting the syringe with an easy grace. “I know exactly how to make a patient suffer more.”

He thrust the needle directly into Li Bai’s right eyeball.

Blood gushed out as Li Bai’s body convulsed. He let out a pitiful howl—the loudest sound he could manage through the pain.

But the torture wasn’t over.

Ji Mian, smiling with almost childlike glee, pulled the bloody needle out, changed the angle, and stabbed it into Li Bai’s left eyeball.
“You looked terrified of the rats, Mr. Li. I thought maybe if you couldn’t see them, you might feel a little better. Don’t you agree?”

Of course, Li Bai couldn’t answer. His breathing grew ragged; the pain was so overwhelming he thought he might die from it. But Ji Mian had no intention of letting him off that easily.

“Mr. Li, I promised Fengguang I’d only be away for one day. I still have a plane to catch back to City A, so I can’t stay and chat. But with all these little darlings to keep you company, I’m sure you won’t feel too lonely.”

Ji Mian casually tossed the syringe back into the box, pulled on his baseball cap, and picked up the empty container. Just like when he arrived, he made his way to the door. Before leaving, he turned back to glance at the blood-soaked man on the floor, now swarming with six or seven rats.

Hearing Ji Mian’s footsteps stop, Li Bai used the last of his strength to plead, “No… please… let me go… I know I was wrong… I’m still young…”

“Young? That’s right, my Fengguang is still very young too.”
Ji Mian’s smile was icy cold. A long time ago, he had wondered if he should let something happen to that silly girl—maybe then she wouldn’t keep showing up and making him feel that unbearable guilt. But no matter how many times he considered it, he could never bring himself to hurt her.

So why should someone like Li Bai be allowed to?

Ji Mian let out a fake, sorrowful sigh—his half-hearted acting sounding utterly insincere.
“Mr. Li, I almost forgot to mention: these rats have quite the appetite. In about three or four minutes, they’ll start getting hungry. I hope you’ll treat them well.”
