Tang Jiuge’s poisoning turned out to be nothing more than a farce.
On their way back to the courtyard, Feng Guang patted Qing Yu on the head. “Little Qing Yu, when you hit your rebellious phase, don’t be like Tang Jiuge. But don’t worry, your master won’t ask you to arrange a marriage or anything like that, so you won’t have to go to such lengths.”
Qing Yu brushed her hand away. “I’m not as childish as him!”
“Well, that’s it.” Feng Guang dashed to Xue Ran’s side, speaking in a tone of exaggerated pity as if to say, “My poor son is just so unlovable.” She continued, “This child is entering his rebellious phase.”
Unable to argue back, Qing Yu huffed and said, “I’m going to make some medicine,” before running off.
Xue Ran smiled gently and looked down. “You’re teasing him again.”
“Heh, who could resist? He’s just too cute!” Feng Guang chuckled before her expression turned a little more serious. “By the way, how do you feel about seeing Guan Yueyue and Yi Wushang together? Don’t you feel even a little upset about it?”
Feng Guang had noticed that for the past few days, Guan Yueyue had been with Yi Wushang, even leaving Tang Jiuge’s room without a word just earlier. She also realized why Nangong Li hadn’t come to cause trouble for her—he must have been distracted by the woman he loved, so he postponed his plans to deal with her.
Xue Ran answered calmly, “Yueyue has grown up. It’s time for her to have her world.”
His words were like letting a bird fly free, but there was no hint of jealousy in his tone.
Feng Guang fixed her gaze on him, not looking away.
Xue Ran couldn’t help but laugh. “Why are you staring at me like that? Did I become more handsome recently?”
She paused, then muttered, “Such narcissism!”
Shouldn’t she be happy that Xue Ran didn’t feel that way about Guan Yueyue? Then why did it feel so strange?
Xue Ran awkwardly touched his nose. “Now that the matter with the Tang Sect is settled, we can take our leave.”
“Sounds good. The Tang Sect is boring anyway. With the Demon Sect leader coming and going, it’s dangerous. I’d rather go to the Old Friend Village… I mean, Old Friend Valley, it’s safer!” She quickly corrected herself, then clung to his arm. “By the way, I think I’ve spotted another couple.”
“Oh? Who?”
“It’s Jin Lu, Grandma Tang’s maid. She likes Shan Ya. Whether Shan Ya feels the same, though, I’m not sure.”
“How did you figure that out?”
“Just a feeling…”
The afternoon sun was warm, and as their footsteps echoed along the sunlit stone path, the sound of their chatter made the walk much more pleasant. Their shadows stretched long, intertwining in the soft light, creating a moment of warmth.
As the day turned to night, with the hour approaching midnight, the cry of a raven pierced the silence, and a figure slowly emerged from the bamboo forest.
Jin Lu knelt before him. “Greetings, Master.”
Nangong Li smiled seductively. “You’ve done well as an undercover agent in the Tang Sect over the years. It must have been hard for you.”
“Your servant dares not complain,” Jin Lu lowered her head, not daring to look at the man before her.
“Thanks to you, I was able to get the key to the Tang Sect’s secret chamber. Now, tell me, do you know if there’s a second exit to the secret chamber?”
“Master, forgive me, but I don’t know.”
“Then you don’t know. But, strangely, Summer Guang and Xue Ran were able to leave without passing through the stone door,” Nangong Li narrowed his eyes. “Jin Lu, Tang Jiuge has feelings for you. You should take advantage of that. As for your other thoughts, you should keep them to yourself. Understand?”
“Yes… Master.”
Suddenly, Nangong Li’s icy demeanor melted, and he smiled warmly. “Once we get the Stormy Pear Blossom Needles, you can leave the Tang Sect and return to the main sect. Jin Lu, the position of my left protector has always been reserved for you.”
Jin Lu lowered her head, her eyes cold as ice. “Thank you, Master.”
