“Actually… I’m blind!”
“Oh? That’s a pity.”
Feng Guang heard his voice filled with regret and thought she might be able to escape. But then she heard his next line: “You won’t be able to see the person who will kill you.”
In an instant, the falling bamboo leaves froze mid-air before shooting toward the crouching girl at incredible speed. Feng Guang instinctively covered her head, internally screaming that her life was over, but the anticipated pain never came. Instead, she heard the sound of a sword.
A sudden figure appeared, wielding a long sword that blocked the incoming leaves, dispersing them one by one with his sword energy. Then he turned to her, concerned, and asked, “Miss, are you alright?”
Feng Guang opened one eye to see a tall figure in front of her. At that moment, he looked like a deity to her. Before she could say she was fine, she saw Nangong Li leaping toward her with an outstretched palm, and she shouted, “Be careful!”
Shan Ya turned around, raising his sword to block, pulling Feng Guang’s hand, and stepping back to create distance. He then asked solemnly, “Who are you? You’ve intruded into our secret chamber and tried to kill someone here.”
He had come in pursuit of the intruder when he heard the commotion but hadn’t expected to run into the very person he was after.
“He’s the leader of the demonic cult!” Feng Guang said, hiding behind Shan Ya, feeling braver now that she had a shield.
Shan Ya looked at Nangong Li skeptically. “Are you the leader of the demonic cult?”
“How interesting,” Nangong Li said, smirking. “I never revealed my identity. How did you know, little girl?”
Shan Ya looked at Feng Guang, waiting for her answer.
Feng Guang boldly declared, “Rumor has it that only the leader of the demonic cult looks indistinguishable as male or female. Given your imposing presence, you can’t possibly be an unknown nobody, right? With a look like that, aren’t you Nangong Li?”
Indistinguishable as male or female… Nangong Li choked for a moment but quickly broke into an even more enchanting smile. “Little girl, I suddenly don’t feel like leaving you with a complete corpse.”
“Shan Tangzhu, protect me!” she clutched the hem of Shan Ya’s robe, making it clear that her survival depended on him.
Shan Ya positioned himself in front of her and faced Nangong Li coldly. “Arrogant! Even if you are the leader of the demonic cult, Tangmen is not a place where you can run rampant.”
Shan Ya advanced with his sword, but Nangong Li dodged and made a feint before retreating. His voice echoed through the bamboo forest: “Tangmen, I will be back.”
He was injured after all, so he didn’t linger and chose to withdraw. Feng Guang let out a sigh of relief, but then she heard him say in the air, “That woman’s life, I will take it too.”
Ugh…
She felt a lump in her throat.
“Don’t be afraid, Miss. Tangmen will protect you,” Shan Ya said, as Nangong Li’s lightness allowed him to vanish in the blink of an eye. He returned to comfort her, understanding that it was natural for a young girl to feel scared when threatened by the leader of the demonic cult.
Feng Guang’s mood didn’t lighten. “What if I leave Tangmen?”
“This… Can’t you stay at Tangmen?” Shan Ya realized that his question was abrupt, but he could only think of that response under the circumstances.
Feng Guang sighed as she looked at Shan Ya’s earnest face. “Forget it, let’s just let things unfold naturally.”
Life and death are beyond one’s control, and she turned to leave.
“Miss!” Shan Ya called after her.
“What now?” she replied, feeling dejected and not looking back.
“If you’re trying to leave this bamboo forest, you’re going the wrong way.”
She paused, her face stiffened as she walked back. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”
Shan Ya scratched the back of his head. “You didn’t ask, either.”
Her master was right; women are the most difficult beings to understand and can be the most unreasonable.
