“I want it,” Xiaoxiao said earnestly. Her large eyes blinked innocently, as though the words want and it were written in them. “Uncle, give it to me. I’ll take it to Mommy. Mommy likes flowers, and they’ll make her happy.”
The man smiled and placed the flower in her hands.
“Xiaoxiao really is a good girl.”
“Thank you, Uncle!”
Just as Xiaoxiao was about to run back with the flower, she suddenly stopped and asked curiously,
“Uncle, how do you know my name is Xiaoxiao?”
“I watched you grow up, so of course I know your name.”
The man crouched down until he was at eye level with her.
“Xiaoxiao, how about we play a game?”
He said he had watched her grow up, yet Xiaoxiao had no memory of ever seeing him before. Still, she thought this uncle looked like a very good person, and he seemed so kind and approachable that she immediately nodded.
“Okay! What are we going to play?”
“Take this box and give it to your mother.”
He produced an exquisitely crafted wooden box and placed it in her hands. Then he smiled lightly and said,
“If your mother asks about it, tell her I’m waiting for her outside.”
“What if Mommy doesn’t ask?”
“If she doesn’t…” He thought about it seriously for a moment. “Then we’ll continue the game next time.”
“Okay!”
Xiaoxiao happily ran back inside.
The man stood up and watched her return to the woman’s side. His gaze lingered for a moment on the woman’s quiet figure seated on the bench. The corners of his lips curved upward before he turned and walked out of the church.
Almost at the same moment, Feng Guang opened the box.
The instant she saw what was inside, she sprang to her feet.
She looked toward the doorway, but there was no one there.
Without hesitation, she hurried outside. After taking several steps, she suddenly remembered Xiaoxiao and turned back, intending to pick her up.
Instead, she saw Lu Heng, who had just finished exchanging wedding vows, holding Xiaoxiao’s hand.
Smiling, Lu Heng said,
“I really like this child. Let her keep me company for a while.”
In Xiaoxiao’s eyes, Lu Heng, dressed in a pure white wedding gown, looked like a fairy straight out of a fairy tale. Being led around by her had the little girl absolutely thrilled.
Feng Guang parted her lips.
In the end, all she said was, “Thank you.”
Then she turned and ran out of the church without another pause.
There, beside the fountain on the lawn, she saw him.
And then, when she was only three steps away, she stopped.
A sudden wave of fear made it impossible for her to move forward.
He simply stood there, smiling gently.
This was not a dream.
She could clearly hear his voice.
Softly, he asked,
“Feng Guang, did you miss me?”
“Qi Wei…”
Suddenly, strength returned to her body.
She ran toward him and threw herself into the embrace he opened for her.
She breathed in the familiar scent that belonged to him. Even after so much time had passed, she still remembered it.
Tears quickly spilled from her eyes beyond her control.
Uncertainly, she whispered,
“Qi Wei… you’re alive… you’re really alive…”
“Yes, I’m alive.”
He wiped away her tears and lowered his head to kiss her lips.
It had been far too long since he had kissed her.
The sweetness of it made him unwilling to let her go.
Only after a long, lingering kiss did he finally pull back.
Looking at her, he smiled softly.
“I’m very happy that you came looking for me, Feng Guang.”
Inside the box had been nothing more than a white seashell.
A seashell with her name carved into it.
It was the same shell he had given her three years ago.
When she had fled in a panic back then, she had somehow lost it without realizing where.
Now, he had personally returned it to her.
Feng Guang gripped his hand tightly.
“Tell me what happened. I clearly… clearly saw Nangong Zhe’s bullet hit your heart. And it happened right in front of me…”
“Feng Guang, an ordinary person’s heart is here.”
Qi Wei guided her hand slightly across his chest.
“Mine is a little off-center.”
“Then… then why did you only come to find me now?”
That was the one thing she could not accept.
“Do you know how convinced I was that you were dead? You never sent me any message. You never let me know anything. Weren’t you worried…”
Her voice trembled.
“Weren’t you worried that during these three years, I might have let you go? That I might have married someone else?”
