A faint smile curved Qi Wei’s lips, his gaze deep and gentle. He kissed her cheek, his lowered voice soft like a lover’s whisper.

“Fengguang, you’re not mistaken. I am threatening you.”

He had never understood what kind of emotions could exist between parents and children, nor had he ever been interested in understanding them. To him, children were merely the byproduct of adults indulging in physical pleasure. From the moment a child left the mother’s body, they existed as an independent person, while the care parents gave their children was simply an investment so that decades later, they could rely on the grown child in return.

To Qi Wei, it was a perfectly fair transaction. Nothing more than a transaction.

Naturally, he could not see anything especially moving or touching about such affection. But for the sake of controlling Fengguang—the woman sitting in his arms while staring at him with cold eyes—he was willing to learn a little more about it.

For example, Fengguang possessed the weakness common to ordinary people:

Family.

Qi Wei took care of her with meticulous attention. He dressed her, fed her meals, and when he worried she might be bored, he repeatedly brought dolls from the dollhouse to keep her company. Indeed, he behaved exactly like the kind of perfect man who spoiled his girlfriend endlessly.

And yet, she could not feel even the slightest warmth from him.

Every night, he held her in his arms while they slept.

Her illness had not yet recovered, and the injuries on her body still needed time to heal. That night, while she lay in bed drifting toward sleep, his lips suddenly covered hers again without warning. As he pried open her teeth, a pill was pushed into her mouth. Even after she obediently swallowed the medicine, he still did not pull away. He always had to kiss her deeply for a long while more, only mercifully retreating once he noticed her breathing had become uneven.

Half-awake, she barely managed to open her eyes a sliver. His hand was gently stroking her cheek as the man said softly,

“Just take medicine for a few more days, and Fengguang’s illness will be gone.”

It had only been a mild fever and cold, yet she had already been sick for over ten days. The reason, of course, was simply because of what he had done to her that day.

Qi Wei never regretted anything he had done.

So all he did was hold her gently, kiss her gently, and finally murmur softly beside her ear:

“Don’t get sick again. It hurts me to see it.”

His voice sounded almost like a hypnotic lullaby. She was already close to falling asleep, and she no longer had the energy to resist. Over the past few days, she had grown used to it. He would apply medicine to her injuries, but he no longer touched her the way he had during those first few days. The shyness, restraint, and anger expected of a woman had all been slowly worn away during this time.

By the time Fengguang realized that she had already given up on herself, it was too late.

She had lost all motivation.

Qi Wei got up to turn off the light. Soon afterward, he returned to her side. Moonlight made her pale face appear even more colorless. Carefully, he pulled the thin blanket over the foot she had left exposed, while the chain still visible outside the blanket gleamed silver beneath the moonlight.

Kissing her cheek, he softly whispered,

“Goodnight.”
