Yao Xiaoxiao stepped out from behind the cabinet and said sincerely, “Thank you for helping me.”

“It was nothing,” Fengguang replied. She did feel some sympathy for the female lead’s situation. “How about this—you stay in my room for now. Once we dock, I have to go onto the island. Just stay here and don’t come out. When the ship heads back, you’ll be able to leave.”

“Okay…” Yao Xiaoxiao looked deeply moved. “Thank you… thank you so much for helping me.”

Fengguang gave an awkward smile. She felt like she didn’t quite deserve such heartfelt gratitude. After all, she was only helping because she could—if things became troublesome, she wouldn’t get too involved.

The ship soon reached the shore. After repeatedly reminding Yao Xiaoxiao not to wander around—and receiving a firm nod in response—Fengguang finally felt at ease enough to disembark.

The island was densely forested, and on its only mountain stood a single building—the infamous and most expensive psychiatric hospital.

Once a year, Diamond Island opened to the outside world for a single day, allowing families to visit patients. In reality, though, most families chose not to come. In wealthy households, having a mentally ill member was considered a stain. Once someone was deemed a worthless burden, there was no reason to spend any more time on them. So, aside from Fengguang, there were only two other visitors.

Fengguang’s reason for coming, of course, was her identity as the fiancée of the most dangerous patient—Nangong Zhe.

A young man complained, “We have to climb such a high mountain every time. It’s exhausting.”

A woman beside him added, “Exactly. I’m not planning to come back next year.”

Since it was Fengguang’s first time here, she didn’t know either of them and had nothing to say. The three of them spent an hour climbing up the mountain. At the hospital entrance, they were greeted by the director.

“My name is Zhang Huai. I’m the director here. Welcome,” said a middle-aged man in his forties. His hair was already thinning on top, but he had a kind and approachable demeanor.

The heavily made-up woman smiled and said, “I heard the hospital got a new director. That stuttering old one finally retired.”

“Well, Director Song had reached retirement age,” Zhang Huai said with a smile. “Please come in. Your relatives are probably already waiting.”

Once inside, the man and woman quickly headed off in different directions, clearly familiar with the place. Fengguang stood alone in the hospital lobby, watching doctors and nurses rush past, along with patients of all kinds. For once, she felt a bit lost.

Zhang Huai asked, “Is this your first time here, Miss?”

“Yes…” Fengguang replied, just as she watched a man who believed he was a bird being led away by doctors. Seeing so many mentally ill patients for the first time left her feeling… unsettled.

“Which patient are you here to see? I can take you there.”

“Nangong Zhe,” she said quickly. “I’m here to see him.”

A troubled expression crossed Zhang Huai’s face. “Nangong Zhe… We were informed that his fiancée would be visiting. You must be Miss Xia Fengguang?”

“That’s right,” Fengguang said. “Director, could you take me to see him?”

“Nangong Zhe is a dangerous individual. If possible, I would advise you not to see him.”

“But I have something very important to discuss with him. I have to see him.”
