Feng Guang exclaimed, “What did you say? An Tong’s health problems are due to his mother giving him medication!?”
She expressed genuine surprise, and Li Bi stared at her for a while, unable to discern anything and believing she truly was unaware. “That’s correct. To prevent doctors from discovering the true nature of An Tong’s illness, An Wan changes family doctors every so often. However, the last doctor uncovered her secret.”
“What about An Tong? Does he know his mother is drugging him?”
“We can’t say for sure at this point.”
“Then you still can’t conclude that An Tong has done anything wrong based on this.”
Li Bi responded, “That doctor extorted a sum of money using this information. The money was indeed transferred from An Wan’s account, but An Tong also has access to her funds.”
Feng Guang scoffed, “In any case, you’ve already determined that An Tong is the one responsible for his mother’s disappearance. Fine, let’s say it is An Tong. But do you think someone in such a frail condition could commit such a horrific act?”
“Well, it’s not impossible; I just haven’t thought of that angle yet.”
“Hmph, it seems you’re judging the case purely on intuition.”
“Feng Guang!” Xia Zhao scolded, “You’re being very rude!”
“I’m just speaking the truth, Dad. If you don’t want me to get close to An Tong, you could find more legitimate means. Is it really necessary to smear his name like this?” Feng Guang stood up, ran upstairs, and slammed her bedroom door shut with a loud bang.
Xia Zhao felt a headache coming on.
Back in her room, Feng Guang’s anger was feigned; her worry was real. She hadn’t expected Li Bi to approach her father, nor had she anticipated him uncovering such information. The current situation was unfavorable for An Tong.
But as long as a body wasn’t found, nothing could be definitively concluded.
On the other end of the phone, An Tong asked, “Feng Guang, what’s wrong?”
“Ah? What do you mean?” She was distracted.
“Were you listening to what I just said? You seem particularly quiet today.”
“That’s because I was wondering why you suddenly called me.” Feng Guang collapsed onto her bed, staring at the ceiling, unsure of what to think. “We live so close to each other. If you wanted to talk to me, I could just come find you. Why did you need to call?”
“Uncle Xia doesn’t like you coming to see me.”
“He can’t control me.”
An Tong let out a short laugh. “Feng Guang, I can tell Uncle Xia loves you. Just be a little obedient and don’t make him angry.”
She pouted. “If I listen to him, does that mean I should stop seeing you?”
“Except for that.”
She smiled slightly. “No matter who says it, I won’t leave you.”
“I know.”
She deliberately asked, “What do you know?”
“I know that Feng Guang likes me.” An Tong’s voice sounded light and gentle. “I like Feng Guang too.”
“Oh my, do you have to be so cheesy?” She rolled over and buried her face in the blanket.
An Tong teased her, “Don’t you like me saying these things?”
“I do.” She replied quickly, feeling both shy and filled with happiness.
“Then I’ll keep saying them to you from now on, how does that sound?”
She obediently answered, “Okay.”
In this way, they engaged in a conversation that held little practical significance for over an hour. Perhaps this was a common occurrence for couples in love, even An Tong couldn’t avoid it.
Eventually, because it was getting late, they had to part with a simple goodnight. Feng Guang still hadn’t mentioned Li Bi’s visit to An Tong; telling him wouldn’t change anything, and it would be better for her to think of a solution herself.
Meanwhile, after the lights in Feng Guang’s room went out, An Tong drew the curtains. The dim room was illuminated only by a small lamp, casting light on the telescope quietly placed by the window, aimed precisely at the pink room on the second floor of the Xia family house.
Wow.. how.. stalkerish is that, An Tong 😅
