In the spreading silence, Xia Chao was finally the first to move. He reached over and took his wife’s hand. After a long pause, he nodded.
“Yes. We have no objections.”
Feng Guang turned to the quiet Wang Ci. “Mom?”
Xia Chao tightened his grip on his wife’s hand.
Wang Ci forced a stiff smile. “Your father can decide everything. I’m tired. I’ll go upstairs and rest.”
She stood and quickly went up the stairs.
Xia Chao rose as well. “The daytime is for you, young people. Your mother and I will rest. Take good care of your guest.”
After saying that, he glanced once more at Ming An and left.
Feng Guang was completely baffled. She turned to Ming An and demanded, “Tell me—what did you do? Why are my parents acting so strange?”
This was nothing like them.
“I simply told them that Feng Guang would never agree to terminate the pregnancy,” Ming An said calmly, patting her head with a gentle smile. “So the choice was between a child born out of wedlock or a child born within marriage. I asked them to pick one. What could I possibly have done to them? Even if I could, they’re your parents. Would I dare offend them?”
He had a point.
Feng Guang stroked her chin and studied him for a long moment. “You’re really not lying to me?”
“With you above me as my witness,” he said solemnly. “If I’m lying, then from now on…” He leaned down and whispered in her ear, “…in bed, you can do whatever you want.”
“Do you have any shame at all?” Her face flushed bright red, but she couldn’t suppress the spark of excitement in her eyes. “You’re serious?”
“Of course. Have I ever broken a promise to you?”
He hadn’t.
Only then did she finally relax and smile. “Since it’s your first time at my house, I’ll show you around.”
“Alright.”
“Wait here. I’m going to put on something warmer.”
She stood on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek, then ran upstairs happily.
For someone pregnant, she certainly had an abundance of energy.
When she came back down, Ming An paused slightly.
“You only added a little more clothing?”
She was wrapped in a thick scarf, wearing a white fur capelet, and who knew how many layers she wore beneath. She looked like a round, bundled-up ball.
Feng Guang blushed but raised her voice to cover her embarrassment. “I’m dressing like this for our baby, okay?”
“I see…” he said with completely unconvincing sincerity.
She lunged at him. Ming An wasn’t prepared and fell back onto the sofa, though he instinctively kept her safely in his arms.
She sat up beside him and glared. “Stop humoring me.”
“Yes, yes, my fault.” He smiled helplessly, then added coaxingly, “No matter how many layers you wear, I can still carry you.”
For a woman, that was the kind of sentence that could make her heart bloom.
“Fine, I forgive you.” She kissed him again and hugged his arm with a grin. “Ming An, I like you. I like you so much. No matter how long this lifetime is, I want to stay by your side.”
He had heard those words before—words that had moved him three hundred years ago.
The darkness in Ming An’s eyes seemed to dissolve in that instant, replaced by a gentle light. He wrapped her in his arms and said softly, “I know. I’ve known for a very long time.”
He had known even before she was born.
Upstairs, at the corner of the hallway, Xia Chao held Wang Ci’s hand and sighed.
“We don’t have any other choice. So all we can do is try to trust him, right?”
Wang Ci didn’t want to say yes. But when she looked at her daughter’s radiant smile, she couldn’t bring herself to say no.
To be chosen by that man was Feng Guang’s misfortune.
But… if he truly loved her, then perhaps she was fortunate after all.
