If Gui Fei had been so confident just moments before, certain that her actions would never be traced back to her, now she was drenched in cold sweat.
Did His Majesty know?
What exactly did His Majesty mean by what he just said?
Gui Fei’s heart was in turmoil. Even after His Majesty and De Fei had walked quite a distance, Gui Fei was still immersed in panic. Her face was pale.
Her personal maid dared not approach her. In the end, it was her nanny who stepped forward to support her.
“Your Highness.”
The nanny said with concern, advising, “Your Highness should enter the inner chambers first. The temperature is dropping now. Standing in this wind won’t be good for your health.”
Gui Fei had so many questions in her heart, and so much she wanted to say; her emotions were surging.
“Nanny, do you think His Majesty is warning me? Does His Majesty know everything I have done? Has he already decided in his heart that I am a wicked woman?”
Gui Fei’s eyes reddened.
She had always been confident that His Majesty would never know what she had done.
But now she realized that perhaps it wasn’t.
“Your Majesty, please calm down. Perhaps His Majesty is bluffing you. If His Majesty knew that you were the one who did it, would he still have ordered Chief Eunuch Zhang to investigate thoroughly?”
“Perhaps His Majesty is just guessing. In the palace, you have the highest rank and manage palace affairs, so you have the most power. His Majesty is probably just suspicious right now. As for those people who died before…”
The nanny gently patted Gui Fei’s back, comforting her slowly: “How could those people compare to you and the Princess in His Majesty’s heart? So, Your Highness need not panic about what you did in the past.”
Gui Fei took a deep breath and gripped the nanny’s hand tightly. Her previously tense emotions eased a little.
“Nanny, you’re right. Those people are nothing. His Majesty doesn’t care about those things. He didn’t inquire about them after they died. Today’s incident was only because Wang Pin made a scene before His Majesty, so he knew about her affairs. Plus, the Imperial Medical Bureau is involved.”
The nanny nodded: “Yes, Your Highness. Wang Pin is really an insignificant little person. His Majesty has long forgotten about her. However, His Majesty is thinking that if someone in the Imperial Medical Bureau can make a move against a concubine now, then in the future, they might be bribed to target the Empress Dowager and His Majesty. This is the key reason why His Majesty attaches importance to this matter today.”
Gui Fei nodded.
She regrets it now. His Majesty has an extremely strong desire for control, which is reflected not only in his control of the court, but also in the harem.
Her involvement with the Imperial Medical Bureau this time was indeed risky.
The Imperial Medical Bureau was indeed like an iron barrel in the past. It was only after managing palace affairs for so many years that she found a handle on that imperial physician and dared to let Li Gui Pin contact and threaten him.
“Then, Nanny, what do you think I should do now?”
The nanny calmly replied, “Your Highness can only remain still. You should not do anything, and in fact, you can’t do anything right now. His Majesty will definitely have someone watching the movements of each palace. If we act rashly, it will easily give His Majesty something to hold against us, which would be counterproductive.”
“As for Li Gui Pin, she is a smart woman. If that imperial physician implicates Li Gui Pin, Her Highness Li Gui Pin will not dare to say that you ordered it. But I think the possibility of his confessing is small. After all, his lifeblood is his only son. For the sake of his only heir, he probably won’t say anything.”
The nanny slowly analyzed the situation.
