Huang Gui Fei (First Rank – one person)

Gui Fei, Shu Fei, Xian Fei, and De Fei (Second Rank – one person of each rank)

Zhao, Xiu, and Chong (Third Rank – three people each rank)

Gui Pin (Fourth Rank)

Pin (Fourth Rank)

Guiren (Fifth Rank – no limited numbers)

Meiren (Fifth Rank – no limited numbers)

Cairen (Sixth Rank -no limited numbers)

Changzai (Sixth Rank -no limited numbers)

Daying (Seventh Rank – no limited numbers)

Translator’s Comment:

I separate this “Imperial Harem Ranks” as one chapter, so that you can easily find it if you want to refer to some of the concubines’ ranks in the future by referring to the chapter title.

 

These ranks are somehow similar to the imperial harem’s rank during the Qing Dynasty.

In the Qing Dynasty, there are one Empress, one Huang Gui Fei, two Gui Fei, 4 Fei, 6 Pin, an unlimited number of Guiren, Changzai, Daying, and Guan Nuzi.

Also, there is another hierarchy to determine the superiority between the imperial concubines of the same rank.

For example, in the second rank, there are Zhao, Xiu, and Chong. They have the same rank, but the hierarchy is zhao (昭) at the highest, then xiu (修), and last is chong (充).

The 3 Zhaos: Zhaoyi (昭儀), Zhaorong (昭容), Zhaoyuan (昭媛).

The 3 Xius: Xiuyi (修儀), Xiurong (修容), Xiuyuan (修媛)

The 3 Chongs: Chongyi (充儀), Chongrong (充容), Chongyuan (充媛)

So, in the second rank itself, Zhaoyi is the highest in hierarchy, and Chongyuan is the lowest.
