Butler Sen walked up to the two women and asked Ah Hua, who was carrying a lantern, “Has the Master’s room been cleaned?”
Ah Hua shook her head.
“Hurry up and go.”
Ah Hua obediently replied, picked up the lantern, and turned to leave.
Bei Yutang watched Ah Hua’s departing figure when, suddenly, her view was blocked by a figure.
She looked up at Butler Sen, who was standing in her way.
“Butler Sen, we wanted to look around here.”
“Ladies, this is the Master’s private area; outsiders are not allowed to enter. If you wish to search, please go to the other side.” Butler Sen politely instructed, dismissing them.
Li Mengmeng wasn’t so easily dismissed. She asked directly, “I asked Ah Hua before, and your Master’s lost item happened to be here when he was staying here, so it’s very likely it’s here.”
Butler Sen smiled and said, “Ladies, you must be mistaken. The item was there the whole time the Master was in the West Hall; it was only discovered missing when he left. That treasure disappeared in the West Hall, so it couldn’t be in the East Hall.”
“But…but…” Li Mengmeng wanted to say something, but didn’t know how to convince him.
“This is the Master’s private area. If you two don’t have anything to do, please don’t set foot here.” Butler Sen patiently instructed.
“Okay.”
Bei Yutang pulled Li Mengmeng away. When they stepped out of the East Hall, they felt the temperature rise. Sunlight streamed through the window, dispelling the chill and making them feel warm and cozy.
“It’s much more comfortable here in the West Hall.” Li Mengmeng sighed.
“Yes.” Bei Yutang replied, her gaze involuntarily drifting to the long, dark corridor behind her.
The corridor was terrifyingly dark, its long passage resembling a bottomless abyss; entering it felt as if one would be swallowed whole.
This thought sent a chill down Bei Yutang’s spine, rising from the soles of her feet to the top of her head.
Li Mengmeng, glancing out of the corner of her eye at Bei Yutang’s exposed arm, asked in surprise, “Sister Bei, are you cold?”
Li Mengmeng looked at the goosebumps rising on her arm, puzzled.
Bei Yutang nodded: “Yes, a little cold.”
“Then, let’s hurry back.”
“Okay.”
The two of them headed toward the West Hall. As they left, two eerie green lights suddenly appeared in the dark, abyss-like corridor, looking from a distance like a pair of glowing green eyes.
Those eyes stared at the departing figures of Bei Yutang and Li Mengmeng.
As Bei Yutang walked away, she suddenly felt something watching her; the same feeling she had when she first arrived the previous night resurfaced.
Bei Yutang instinctively looked back, but saw only darkness, nothing else.
When Bei Yutang turned around, the green light in the dimly lit corridor reappeared, staring at them until they were far away.
When Bei Yutang and Li Mengmeng reached the main hall of the West Hall, they saw Feng Qing and the others sitting in the living room, their expressions grim.
“What happened?” Bei Yutang asked.
“Ten minutes ago, the police called. A typhoon is approaching, and the waves at sea are too high, so they can’t come over.” Dr. Zhang said in a deep voice.
“What?!” Li Mengmeng’s voice suddenly rose, exclaiming in shock.
“Then we’re going to have to share a room with that corpse?”
“There’s nothing we can do about it.” Dr. Zhang said helplessly.
This situation wasn’t something they wanted either.
