In the carriage, Daixiang sat at the outermost seat. She was very quiet, occasionally glancing at the young lady from the corner of her eye. She thought that she was truly beautiful, even more beautiful than the golden boy and jade girl she had seen in the temple.
However, she noticed that the young lady seemed to be preoccupied with something and was not in a good mood.
Xiao Zimo lowered his head. There was a melancholy on his small face that did not belong to his age.
On the other side, Bei Yutang leaned on the soft cushion, recuperating.
Her injuries hadn’t healed yet, and coupled with a fever and the constant travel, her body was already weak, yet she forced herself to complete the subsequent tasks. The result of all the effort and energy was exhaustion.
As soon as she got on the carriage, Bei Yutang fell into a deep sleep.
The carriage was very quiet, and only the sound of the wheels could be heard, echoing in the carriage.
Bei Yutang slept for a whole day. When she woke up, she just ate a little food and continued to sleep after getting on the carriage. A day passed like this, and it was not until the third day that Bei Yutang finally regained her composure.
“Mother, this is for you.” Xiao Zimo brought the food to her and sat down beside her obediently.
When Daixiang came back, she saw that the young lady’s face had returned to normal.
However, thinking of her previous appearance, she took the opportunity to follow Bei Yutang when she went out to relieve herself.
Bei Yutang saw her following her and said, “Daixiang, is there anything wrong?”
Daixiang had very little contact with Bei Yutang, and to be more precise, she had not had much contact with An Ye and Xiao Zimo in the past three days.
She hesitated for a moment before speaking, “Sister Mu, the Young Lady seems to be worried.”
“What’s going on? Tell me in detail.”
Daixiang told Bei Yutang about Xiao Zimo’s situation over the past two days. After listening, Bei Yutang understood.
“I understand.”
After Daixiang finished speaking, she felt a sense of relief.
With the guidance of the people who followed and served the Young Lady, her mood should improve.
After Bei Yutang returned, she didn’t immediately seek out Xiao Zimo. Instead, she waited until after dinner to go for a walk with him. The two of them walked along the official road. It was approaching dusk, and the road was deserted, with complete silence.
Bei Yutang held Xiao Zimo’s hand.
“Mo’er, do you realize what you did wrong the last time you encountered the assassin?”
Her voice was calm, but it sounded cold to Xiao Zimo’s ears, so cold that it sent shivers through his body.
Bei Yutang looked at Xiao Zimo, who lowered his head and remained silent. She saw a look on his face she had never seen before: a mixture of guilt, regret, and sadness.
Bei Yutang paused, and Xiao Zimo followed suit.
She looked at him intently, her voice slightly cold.
“Look up.”
Xiao Zimo shuddered slightly and lifted his delicate little face. His delicate face was now pale, his eyes reddened, and he bit his lower lip, as if afraid to meet Bei Yutang’s gaze.
“Look at me.” Bei Yutang commanded.
Xiao Zimo didn’t dare disobey her. He tilted his head and looked at her. The coldness in Bei Yutang’s eyes made his nose sore.
“Answer me.”
Xiao Zimo’s voice choked, “Mother, I was wrong. I, I was too reckless.”
He didn’t cry, but tears welled up in his eyes.
“Mother once taught me to stay calm, no matter what. I didn’t do it.”
Bei Yutang knew that Xiao Zimo was very smart, very smart. Naturally, he knew why the situation had happened that day.
