Bei Yutang said in a low voice, “It’s said that human nature is inherently good. The babies are born like a blank sheet of paper, but the environment they live in determines the color that is added to that blank sheet of paper. Some become evil, some become good. If we follow the previous statement, even those whose blank sheet of paper has already been stained black, and we vainly hope to use benevolence and law to restrain them and make them change their ways, some may succeed, but most will remain stubborn.”
“In Mother’s view, nothing is absolute. Not all evil people can reform, but that doesn’t mean they won’t.”
Xiao Zimo was confused, but he quickly grasped her meaning.
The previous statement emphasized ‘benevolence’, the idea that relying solely on ‘benevolence’ to govern the world and control the people was somewhat biased. As Mother said, nothing was absolute; not everyone could change from black to white.
An Ye remained silent. When he heard Bei Yutang say that some people, once they’d turned evil, found it difficult to reform, his heart sank slightly, but what she said next immediately eased his mind.
He lived in darkness; his world was nothing but darkness.
He knew very well that attempting to control people like them with ‘benevolence’ would only draw scorn from the public.
As for the small group Bei Yutang mentioned, in An Ye’s eyes, they definitely didn’t belong.
Xiao Zimo asked many more questions, and Bei Yutang patiently explained them one by one.
An Ye regained his composure, sat cross-legged in meditation, and regulated his internal energy.
At noon, the carriage stopped. Bei Yutang and Xiao Zimo disembarked, while An Ye remained.
“Uncle Zhang, these are some meat pies my mother made. Try them. They’re delicious.” Xiao Zimo handed two pies to Coachman Zhang.
Coachman Zhang took it with a smile and, under Xiao Zimo’s urging gaze, took a bite.
After taking a bite, Coachman Zhang’s eyes lit up.
“Delicious, delicious. This meat pie is absolutely amazing! This is the first time I’ve had such a flavorful meat pie.”
An Ye, left alone in the carriage, naturally heard the noise outside; his stomach was rumbling.
Bei Yutang took a pot of water and three meat pies from her bag, walked to the front of the carriage, lifted the curtain, and placed the items inside.
Bei Yutang said nothing, and neither did An Ye, merely glancing at the items.
After setting the items down, Bei Yutang left.
An Ye looked at the food, casually picked up a meat pie, and put it in his mouth. After taking a bite, a strange light flashed in his gloomy eyes. The meat pie tasted just as Coachman Zhang had said: delicious.
When he picked up the meat pie, he didn’t smell any aroma. But as he took a bite, the aroma of the meat pie filled his mouth. The meat was tender, the outer dough was chewy, and the taste was delicious.
He finished one pie in a few bites and quickly picked up the second one. The more he ate, the more he enjoyed it.
After quickly finishing the three pies, An Ye felt a little unsatisfied.
Unconsciously, An Ye paid more attention to the woman than he should have. A woman with medical skills and excellent cooking skills was rare, and her knowledge was even rarer.
After the rest, the carriage continued on its way.
Bei Yutang’s next destination is Linzhou Prefecture, which is one of the major prefectures of the Great Zhou Dynasty and a huge city. It takes at least twelve days to drive from Baiyun Town to Linzhou Prefecture.
Bei Yutang was not in a hurry to complete the mission this time, but wanted to settle them down first.
