Family Compound (1)

Zhao Haoyang subconsciously thought that his daughter was afraid of strangers and was just confused for a moment.

He opened his arms, and while waiting for Zhao Suisui to come over, he said with a smile: “Suisui, don’t you recognize Dad?”

When Zhao Suisui saw this, she hid behind Feng He again and looked at him warily.

She didn’t want to be hugged by her bad Dad!

When Zhao Jingcheng, who was standing on Zhao Haoyang’s side, saw his sister like this, he ran to her side, took her little hand, and explained: “Sister, this is our Dad. Don’t you remember?”

When Zhao Suisui heard what he said, she was almost furious.

Feng He also felt a little strange when she saw her daughter looking hostile to her husband.

She knelt down, pinched Zhao Suisui’s little face gently, and said with a smile: “Didn’t Suisui always say that you missed Dad at home before? Why didn’t you talk to Dad when you saw him?”

Zhao Suisui tightened her mouth and said nothing.

Feng He saw that she was unwilling to speak, so she didn’t force it.

She picked up Suisui and said to Zhao Haoyang: “Forget it, let’s go first. The two children are tired after riding the train for so long.”

“Okay.” Zhao Haoyang sighed regretfully.

He picked up the luggage and picked up Zhao Jingcheng with the other hand. The couple followed the flow of people out of the station.

Along the way, Zhao Haoyang frequently looked at Zhao Suisui in Feng He’s arms.

He felt a little aggrieved. Alas, his daughter didn’t even kiss him! It must be that he spent too little time with her. Zhao Haoyang reflected deeply in his heart.

But, it doesn’t matter. Now that his wife and children have joined the army, he has more time to spend with them!

Zhao Haoyang came here in a military vehicle, and the green SUV of the Dongfang Red Army parked on the roadside was very conspicuous.

As soon as their family of four came out, they attracted a lot of people’s attention.

In this era, there was no big variety in clothing styles and colors.

Zhao Haoyang’s military uniform naturally attracted attention, and the three people next to him, Feng He, mother and two children, were not to be outdone.

Feng He has a beautiful appearance, a gentle temperament, and a bookish air around her. She is obviously wearing the same white shirt and black pants as everyone else, but it has a slightly different look when she wears them.

The two children next to her are even more beautiful. The little boy is handsome, and the little girl is delicate and beautiful. People can’t help but sigh that they are such an eye-catching family.

The Songnan troops are stationed in the mountains on the outskirts of the country, only a short drive away.

Along the way, the urban buildings in Songnan City are gradually replaced by mountains, and no houses can be seen anymore.

Zhao Suisui was held in Feng He’s arms and sat, looking at the scenery passing by outside the car window. She tugged at the corner of her clothes nervously.

After driving for more than an hour, the army gate was finally vaguely visible in front of them.

Zhao Haoyang’s car stopped at the army gate.

The entry and exit of the troops are strictly controlled, and family members accompanying the troops must register when they first arrive.

Feng He knew this process, so she took out a series of proof materials that she had prepared long ago and got out of the car with Zhao Haoyang and the two children.

After Zhao Haoyang and the soldiers at the door saluted each other, they started to register.

After verifying that the materials were correct and completing the process, Zhao Haoyang felt relaxed and said with a smile: “Go to the cafeteria to have breakfast first. I will show you the way.”

After saying that, a dark-skinned little soldier ran over, showing his big white teeth, and said, “Deputy Commander Zhao, Sister-in-law, I will send your luggage for you first.”

“Sorry to trouble you.” Feng He nodded and said with a smile.

The little soldier touched the back of his head and smiled.

He thought that this sister-in-law was so gentle, and the two children were so cute. No wonder Deputy Commander Zhao, who usually had a straight face, had become much gentler!

At this moment, Zhao Haoyang was looking at Zhao Suisui with burning eyes and said in a lower voice: “Suisui, can Dad take you and your brother to the cafeteria?”

“I want Mom to hug me!” Zhao Suisui refused ruthlessly and hugged Feng He’s leg instead.

“But the cafeteria is far away from here. Mom will be tired from holding you.” Zhao Haoyang explained patiently.

After hearing this, Zhao Suisui’s face became tangled.

Translator’s Little Encyclopedia:

Cultural Revolution (Part 2)

This period saw numerous atrocities, including a massacre in Guangxi that included acts of cannibalism, as well as incidents in Inner Mongolia, Guangdong, Yunnan, and Hunan. Red Guards, primarily consisting of university students, endeavored to destroy the “Four Olds”: old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits.

This often took the form of destroying historical artifacts, ransacking cultural and religious sites, and targeting other citizens deemed to be representative of the Four Olds.

Millions were formally accused of being members of the Five Black Categories*, and suffered public humiliation, imprisonment, torture, hard labor, seizure of property, and sometimes execution or harassment into suicide. Intellectuals were considered to be the “Stinking Old Ninth*”, and became widely persecuted, with scholars and scientists killed or forced to commit suicide.

The country’s schools and universities were closed, and the National College Entrance Examination was canceled. Over 10 million youth from urban areas were relocated under the Down to the Countryside Movement* policy.

This was in direct timeline with the anticommunist sentiments in the West, right?

    1. nopenopenope says:

I think the cultural revolution was slightly later, at least compared to the USA. The strongest anti-communist sentiment in the USA, was late 1940s to mid 1950s, though repercussions of that movement lasted into the 1960s.
