Feng He was a top student in the English Department of Peking University in the early 1960s.
After graduating from university, she stayed at the school to teach and became a teacher in the English Department of Peking University.
She and Zhao Haoyang were middle school classmates, but because she started studying early, she was two years younger than Zhao Haoyang.
After the college entrance examination, Zhao Haoyang asked her out. The usually bright and bold eighteen-year-old boy blushed for a rare moment. He hesitated for a long time before finally holding back the sentence: “What do you think of me?”
Feng He, who was young at the time, also blushed.
Under Zhao Haoyang’s unremitting pursuit, the two of them finally confirmed their relationship.
Later, she went to Peking University and Zhao Haoyang entered the military academy. They kept in touch with each other through letters during college.
The year Feng He graduated, the two of them went to get their marriage certificate and officially became husband and wife.
But after getting married, Zhao Haoyang spent most of his time in the army, so the two of them stayed together less and more apart.
In fact, Zhao Haoyang was qualified to let his family join the army very early, but Feng He had just graduated at that time and was unwilling to give up her job. Later, when Zhao Jingcheng was born, it was even harder to leave.
When that movement began, Zhao Suisui was born and Feng He was also on maternity leave.
After things gradually developed in an uncontrollable direction, she was lucky enough to escape.
Later, the school was in chaos and the university was suspended, and even Feng He’s mentor was sent down. Under the persuasion of her family, Feng He gave up the idea of returning to school.
At that time, she also thought about joining the army, but at that time, Zhao Haoyang was stationed with the army in the northwest where conditions were harsh and difficult. Feng He did not mind it very much, but she was afraid that the children would not be able to adapt to it because they were still young.
So, she has been putting it off until now, and it’s time to leave.
During the past few years of the movement, the Feng family had not been very peaceful, because Feng He’s father’s sister, Feng He’s aunt, stayed in the United States in her early years, and Feng He’s parents were harassed many times.
Although Feng He was married, she had always been stared at because of her aunt and because she was a teacher in the English department.
Several times, things almost got into trouble, but thanks to Grandpa Suisui’s intervention, nothing serious happened.
There were no big troubles, but there were constant minor troubles. For example, Zhao Jingcheng was bullied by his classmates because of these things in elementary school.
After Feng He learned about this, she immediately took the child home.
It was not until a few months ago that Zhao Haoyang was transferred from the Northwest to Songnan, and he mentioned the matter of joining the army again that Feng He made up her mind to take her two children to find him.
After all, the most stable during this period was the army, so there was no need to worry about these things affecting the children.

Early the next morning, the Zhao brother and sister were woken up by Feng He from their sleep.
Zhao Jingcheng got up and rubbed his sleepy eyes. His sister did not know what she was dreaming about last night, and she kicked him several times, causing him to not sleep well.
As for Zhao Suisui… She was still burying her butt in the quilt and refused to get up.
She just dreamed that she beat a woman whose face she could not see clearly with her little fist! (T/N: Baby, you got the wrong target~~)
However, after being shaken awake by Zhao Jingcheng, Zhao Suisui was confused for a while and began to wonder why she hit this woman?
Oh, right! This woman will be her stepmother in the future!
Zhao Suisui is only four and a half years old, so her brain capacity is also small. Although there was an extra book and memory in her mind, it was difficult to mobilize it at will.
She only remembered the most important thing: protecting her mother and brother, and defeating her bad Dad and stepmother!
Feng He did not know what her daughter was thinking. Seeing that she was awake, she took her to the train connection to wash up.
After taking care of her two children, she started to pack her luggage.
Because she had two children to carry along the way, she didn’t bring much luggage when she came.
She could just buy commonly used items there, and she could wait for the items that were not commonly used to be sent to her from Beijing.
After a while, the green train entered Songnan Railway Station, and its speed gradually slowed down.

Translator’s Little Encyclopedia:
Cultural Revolution (Part 1)
The Cultural Revolution (CR), formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It was launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasted until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society.
In May 1966, with the help of the Cultural Revolution Group, Mao claimed that bourgeois elements had infiltrated the government and society with the aim of restoring capitalism. Mao called on young people to “bombard the headquarters”, and proclaimed that “to rebel is justified”. Many young people, mainly students, responded by forming cadres of Red Guards throughout the country. A selection of Mao’s sayings were compiled into the Little Red Book, which became revered within his cult of personality.

I will really appreciate it. ♥️♥️♥️

Thanks for that history lesson. This is why this genre fascinates me
I don’t understand why these people who were implicated and sent down didn’t reject the regime or communism. When they were reinstated, they just say that the previous times were chaotic but they don’t really condemn the red guards or Mao, the beginning of their misery.
