“I came here on leave not because of this brat.” Lu Rong said helplessly. He saw Zhao Jingcheng and Zhao Suisui again and asked with a smile, “Have you signed up?”
“Yeah.” Feng He nodded, looked at Lu Zhou, and asked, “What grade is Zhouzhou in?”
“First grade, right?” Lu Rong thought for a while and said. He didn’t know if his son had ever gone to school.
Zhao Suisui became happy when she heard this, jumped up a bit, and said happily: “Wow, then Brother Lu Zhou will be in the same class as me!”
Zhao Jingcheng was a little unhappy because he couldn’t even be in the same class as his sister.
And Zhao Jingcheng didn’t like Lu Zhou at all.
He had a grudge. The last time his sister was punished, it was all because of Lu Zhou!
No, he couldn’t let the two of them be in the same class. What if his sister was bullied by him?
But his sister would definitely have to stay in the first grade, so there was only…
“Lu Zhou, you are older than Suisui, and you are in the same class as her?” Zhao Jingcheng deliberately said provocatively to Lu Zhou.
Children are all a bit competitive, and Lu Zhou is no exception.
And he also hated Zhao Jingcheng. Now that he said that again, he immediately became unhappy.
He turned to Lu Rong and said, “I’m not going to the first grade. I want to go to the second grade.”
Zhao Suisui blinked, looked at her brother, and then at Brother Lu Zhou. She didn’t understand why he was suddenly going to the second grade?
“You’re in second grade? Do you understand?” Lu Rong looked at Lu Zhou with suspicion.
Lu Zhou was a little angry when he heard it and said with a stinky face: “I understand. I went to school!”
“Really? Why haven’t I heard your Grandma say it?” Lu Rong still didn’t believe it.
“Do you think you know me well?” Lu Zhou’s answer was a bit sharp.
Just when the father and son were about to quarrel, a patrolling teacher came over and asked, “What’s wrong?”
When he heard that Lu Zhou wanted to go to the second grade, the teacher smiled and said, “This is not easy. I will ask a few questions. If you can answer them, go to the second grade and sign up.”
“Come on, it’s you who will be embarrassed if you can’t answer.” Lu Rong looked at Lu Zhou with a dark face and said.
Lu Zhou turned away and said ‘hum’, ignoring Lu Rong.
But what surprised Lu Rong was that Lu Zhou actually answered it. He knew all the words the teacher pointed at on the tree. Although the words he wrote were a bit immature, they were pretty good.
The teacher who asked the question smiled with satisfaction and said, “Not bad. He can go to the second grade.”
Lu Rong was also a little surprised: “You brat, you can do it!”
Lu Zhou still ignored him with a sullen face.
However, Lu Zhou glanced at Zhao Jingcheng and returned his words to him unchanged, saying, “You are older than me, and you are in the same class as me?”
Zhao Jingcheng: “…”
He was a little angry, but Lu Zhou was no longer in the same class as his sister. He was happy!
Zhao Suisui looked on in confusion.
How so? Brother Lu Zhou actually went to the second grade and was no longer in the same class as her!
Both her brother and Brother Lu Zhou were in the second grade, so Zhao Suisui was once again eager to try to settle down.
So she grabbed Feng He’s clothes again and said coquettishly: “Mom, I’m going to the second grade too. I want to be in the same class as Brother and Brother Lu Zhou.”
The teacher who asked the question hadn’t left yet. Hearing this, he smiled and said, “You also want to go to the second grade? Then, it’s the same as before. If you can answer the questions correctly, how about I let you register for the second grade?”
Zhao Suisui nodded hastily.
The teacher who asked the questions was the same as before. He first asked a few oral questions, including arithmetic questions, poems learned in the first grade, etc.
Zhao Suisui listened to Feng He at home and answered smoothly.
The next step is literacy.
The teacher who asked the question opened the textbook and randomly pointed at a word for Zhao Suisui to recognize. Zhao Suisui was originally full of confidence, but she wanted to faint as soon as she saw the word.
Yes, Zhao Suisui was illiterate.
Although she had a good memory and she could quickly recite a few poems that Feng He taught them, she didn’t know the words in them!
Of course, Feng He taught Zhao Suisui how to write, but Zhao Suisui was a squeamish and devilish person who couldn’t stand the pain of learning to write, so she always managed to get by with Feng He.
Feng He thought that she was young and did not force her, so Zhao Suisui could not read or write.
“This word is read, read…” Zhao Suisui got stuck.
It was also the fault of the teacher who asked the question. He was referring to a word, not from a poem but a sentence from the text. This made Zhao Suisui unable to guess even if she wanted to.
Since you can’t even recognize the characters, let alone write them.
The teacher who asked the question knew it well but still said gently: “Kid, it seems you still have to stay in the first grade and study hard.”
Zhao Suisui buried her face in Feng He’s lap in shame and anger.
Woo woo woo… Embarrassing!
Feng He looked amused, touched her head, and smiled at her: “Who told you to be lazy and slippery before? Now you know it’s embarrassing, right?”

Translator’s Little Encyclopedia:
Chinese Education In 60s-70s (Part 2)
Cultural Revolution reformers wanted students to develop critical thinking, industrial skills, and farming skills, while still retaining a focus on academics. Universities resumed partial recruitment in 1970, but only workers, farmers, and soldiers with revolutionary credentials that had been recommended were admitted. Some ambitious students became manual laborers so they would have a better chance of getting into university.
The curriculum was revised with a focus on practical education, and abstract learning and “bookishness” were condemned. Classroom education included only a fraction of the school day and the balance was spent in practical training. The precise mix of academic work and physical work varied by time and location.
In the early stages of the Cultural Revolution, shiying kebei (trial textbooks) heavily weighted towards practical knowledge such as operating machinery or pumps proliferated.
By 1971, these textbooks had achieved a greater balance between practical knowledge and more traditional academic subjects. From 1973-1975, the practice of kaimen banxue (running an open school) was encouraged. Each week, students would have one afternoon of routine physical labor. Students could spend a month learning a skill of their choosing at a factory, hospital, or the like.

We know SuiSui is 4years old. How old are Jingcheng and Lu Zhou?
I think ChengCheng was said to be six when the school/nursery option was first brought up. So Zhouzhou would be five since he’s younger than Chengcheng but older than Suisui.
