Chapter 89: Blood Ties
“A-Xue, I’m heading home now!”
Wei Caining said as she grabbed her backpack, opened the door, waved goodbye, and hurried out.
At that moment, the dormitory was left with only Ye Xue.
She tidied up the things on the desk, packed the remaining items into her backpack, and then looked up at the balcony.
A red figure was drifting across the science building across from her.
The woman in red seemed to notice Ye Xue and waved at her.
Ye Xue smiled faintly and nodded. After that, she grabbed her backpack and left the dormitory.
As she stepped out of the school gate, she saw Yu Qi’s car driving toward her.
At the same time, the voice of Bai Liu could be heard from inside the car: “Master, here, over here!”
Ye Xue walked to the car door, where Bai Liu, sitting in the passenger seat, was waving at her.
Ye Xue raised an eyebrow and asked with interest, “How come you’re free today? Don’t you have work at the Taoist temple?”
Bai Liu made a pleading gesture: “Master, my father finally showed mercy and gave me half a day off. Let’s not talk about work; it’s such a depressing topic.”
Seeing him lying back lazily, Ye Xue couldn’t help but laugh.
Yu Qi had already opened the backseat door. Ye Xue noticed he seemed to have a bit of a dark aura around him and asked, “Did you run into those things again?”
Yu Qi nodded slightly.
Bai Liu added, “Yeah, but it was pretty funny. I, a big, mighty soul reaper, was sitting right there, and they didn’t even sense me, just kept following. Then, I had to use the soul-binding rope to scare those little ghosts off.”
Bai Liu put his hand on his chin thoughtfully. “Looks like my kingly aura still isn’t strong enough.”
Ye Xue had been listening intently, but as Bai Liu rambled on, she stopped paying attention and instead looked at Yu Qi, frowning. “Why have you been running into ghosts so often lately?”
Before, it was once every few days, but now it seemed like it was every day.
Yu Qi reassured her, “It’s fine, don’t worry. I just got delayed a bit. They can’t do anything to me.”
At first, some reckless little ghosts were trying to steal Yu Qi’s blood and flesh, but since he broke free from the control of thousands of ghosts, he rarely encountered them. Plus, with the Five Mountains True Shape Map in his possession, ordinary ghosts didn’t dare approach him.
But for some reason, lately, the number of reckless little ghosts had been increasing.
Even Bai Liu, a soul reaper, couldn’t intimidate them.
Since Uncle Wang, the driver, was focused on driving, he didn’t participate in the conversation.
The car moved smoothly ahead.
Ye Xue, however, realized they weren’t heading to the Xuan Zhen Temple and asked curiously, “Where are we going?”
Yu Qi held her hand and glanced at the passenger seat.
Ye Xue slowly looked forward.
Bai Liu cleared his throat, speaking seriously but still with a hint of pride, “I’ve taken on a few jobs recently and earned some money, so I thought I’d treat Master to a meal!” He patted his chest. “I’m covering the bill!”
Ye Xue was puzzled. “Didn’t you treat me to a meal before?”
Bai Liu corrected her, “That was my father’s money. It’s different!”
Ye Xue paused, then leaned against Yu Qi’s shoulder and laughed. “Alright, then I’ll accept graciously.”
Laughter and chatter filled the car.
Bai Liu looked out the window and took note of the road, surprised when they passed through without any trouble. He remarked, “Hey, I thought we’d run into some ghosts, but it’s been so quiet today. What’s going on?”
Ye Xue, nearly falling asleep, casually replied, “Maybe your kingly aura scared them off, and they’re too afraid to come near.”
Bai Liu: “…” Although Master was using his earlier words to compliment him, the tone somehow felt odd.
Along the way, Ye Xue brought up the Yu family matter.
She briefly mentioned the incident with Yu Mingxuan earlier and said, “I have a feeling Yu Mingxuan won’t give up so easily.”
Bai Liu was confused. “Aren’t they cousins? What kind of deep enmity do they have to go to such extremes?”
Yu Qi answered calmly, “It’s not uncommon for family members to turn against each other in wealthy families for money and power.”
Ye Xue knew that Yu Qi was thinking about his situation.
Afterward, to avoid bringing up painful memories, they switched topics.
Before they knew it, the car had entered the commercial street.
Ye Xue looked out the window and saw a car passing by.
At first, she didn’t think much of it, but when she sensed the faint dark aura emanating from the car ahead, she frowned and looked again.
To her surprise, it was Yu Ming and He’s car.
Ye Xue recognized the license plate. It was the same car that Yu Ming and He had driven when they came to the Xuan Zhen Temple.
She stared ahead, startled. “Why is there a piece of ghost money behind Yu Minghe?”
Yu Qi frowned, as if he realized something, his expression becoming serious.
The living can’t use ghost money. If it’s attached to someone, it means they’re either about to be taken by the soul collector or they’ve made a deal to trade their life for the ghost’s, and the ghost money serves as proof of the transaction. Once their body weakens, it will attract evil spirits.
In either case, it meant Yu Minghe was in danger.
Ye Xue didn’t hesitate and said, “Uncle Wang, follow that car.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the car sped forward.
Ye Xue quickly took out cinnabar and yellow talismans from her backpack, swiftly writing spells on the talisman.
Just as she finished the last stroke, she heard Yu Qi call, “Ye Xue!”
Ye Xue picked up the talisman and looked up. A large truck was coming down the fork in the road, seemingly not seeing the path clearly, and was heading straight toward the car where Yu Minghe was. It looked like the truck was about to crush the car into pieces.
Ye Xue immediately rolled down the window and threw the talisman forward, chanting, “Three Clears, protect the body, swiftly as the law commands!”
The yellow talisman fluttered in the wind as if responding to a summons, flying directly toward Yu Minghe’s car.
The talisman passed through the traffic, hitting the original ghost money and replacing it, sticking to Yu Minghe’s body.
In a split second, the golden light flashed brightly. The truck driver was briefly blinded by the light and, when he regained his senses, realized he was about to crash into another car!
The driver quickly turned the steering wheel to avoid the collision, but despite his best efforts, he couldn’t fully avoid it.
The truck scraped the back of the luxury car, sending it flying into the guardrail.
Bystanders gasped in shock at the scene.
Yu Minghe hadn’t had time to react when he felt a sharp pain in his head as if something had struck him. His vision blurred with red, and sticky liquid slid down his cheek.
He tried to open his eyes, but all he could see was blood.
A strange shadow slowly wriggled from the ground, inching forward. Just as it was about to crawl into the car and attack Yu Minghe, it was hit by the talisman behind him, and the ghostly figure was instantly shattered.
Around them, people were crying out in surprise, gathering around.
Yu Qi and Bai Liu quickly called 110 (emergency services) and 120 (ambulance) to await rescue.
Ye Xue, however, gently shook a bell where the bystanders couldn’t see her.
The clear sound of the bell echoed, and the scattered ghostly figure on the ground responded to the summon, but before it could do anything, Ye Xue collected it into a bottle.
She sealed the bottle and looked at the ghost inside, feeling an overwhelming sense of horror.
If she hadn’t replaced the ghost money with the talisman in time, even if Yu Minghe had avoided the truck’s collision, he wouldn’t have escaped the ghost’s devouring.
The ambulance soon arrived and took Yu Minghe to the hospital.
Not long after, Yu Huazhong arrived after receiving the news.
He came alone, concerned that his wife might be too emotionally affected if she heard the news, so he hadn’t told her yet.
Yu Qi was on the phone nearby.
The group had barely exchanged a few words when a nurse came out of the operating room and said, “The patient has lost too much blood and needs blood loss treatment. However, the patient’s blood type is rare—Rh negative type A. The hospital is running low on Rh-negative blood, and we need to request a blood transfer from other blood banks.”
“Rh negative type A?” Bai Liu, listening nearby, turned to Ye Xue and said, “Master, don’t you have panda blood? Isn’t your blood type also Rh negative type A?”
Hearing this, Yu Huazhong immediately looked over.
Ye Xue pinched her hand and said, “I am Rh negative type A.”
However…
The nurse asked, “Miss, are you a relative of the patient?”
Ye Xue hesitated for a moment, and Bai Liu quickly answered for her, “No, we just met Mr. Yu recently.”
The nurse said to Ye Xue, “In that case, please follow me.”
When Yu Qi put down his phone, the nurse received a call. Her expression relaxed as she said, “The blood bank has found enough Rh-negative type A blood. We can proceed with the surgery.”
The nurse nodded to the group and quickly left with her colleagues.
Bai Liu quietly slipped over to Ye Xue and whispered, “Master, why didn’t you give blood to Mr. Yu just now?”
Ye Xue turned her head toward him.
Bai Liu continued, “I noticed you hesitated when the nurse asked you to donate blood. But you’re always willing to help others, so it can’t be because you’re afraid of pain or giving blood. Why did you hesitate?”
Bai Liu spoke softly, so only he and Ye Xue could hear.
“…” Ye Xue didn’t know how to explain.
What could she say? She suspected she might be related to Yu Minghe as siblings, and direct relatives shouldn’t donate blood to each other.
Such a guess seemed absurd, even to her. Let alone Bai Liu.
But even so, Ye Xue couldn’t take the risk.
Yu Minghe was in critical condition, but if there was even a slight chance they were siblings, Ye Xue couldn’t risk donating blood. Otherwise, her action of giving blood could very well turn into a death sentence for Yu Minghe.
On the side, Yu Huazhong seemed distracted.
What a coincidence, the girl named Ye Xue also had Rh-negative type A blood.
Yu Huazhong couldn’t help but think about his wife’s dependence on Ye Xue.
Though his wife had often mentioned wanting to find a daughter, she had never been this proactive in approaching a girl.
Ye Xue was the first.
In fact, from the first moment Yu Huazhong had seen Ye Xue, he felt a strange sense of familiarity.
Once such a thought took root, it became uncontrollable.
Yu Huazhong suddenly entertained a bold idea.
Could it be? Is Ye Xue truly their daughter?
He slowly turned to look at the girl not far away.
Confirming if there was a blood relationship between them was simple. A paternity test would suffice.
Bai Liu noticed Yu Huazhong’s gaze and quietly reminded, “Master, Chairman Yu seems to be looking at us. Do you think he might think you don’t want to give blood to his son and might hold a grudge against you?”
“…” Yu Qi heard Bai Liu’s speculation and wasn’t sure whether to call it far-fetched.
Ye Xue paused, then said to Bai Liu, “Stop talking nonsense.”
But Yu Huazhong had already walked over.
Bai Liu instinctively tried to stand in front of Ye Xue. “Um, Chairman Yu…”
Yu Huazhong looked at Ye Xue and said, “Ye Xue, perhaps you’ll find this sudden, but I still want to ask a request.”
Ye Xue looked at him with clear eyes.
Whether it was a psychological suggestion or not, the more Yu Huazhong looked at her, the more he felt that her eyes resembled those of his wife and child.
This made him even more composed, and he continued, “Could you please accompany me to do a paternity test?”
Upon hearing these words, Ye Xue wasn’t surprised. She felt as though the dust had finally settled.
Bai Liu, however, was left speechless.
What? Was Chairman Yu’s earlier remark about the “wealthy and prosperous” destiny, not a casual comment but something serious?
