Chapter 85: The Unlucky Spirit
The security guard hadn’t expected the exorcist to be so bold, as he directly slapped the board over the ghost in the hooded coat.
When the board, now marked with a talisman, hit the ghost, its form wavered slightly. As it moved, the thick coat covering its body lightly parted, revealing the headless torso beneath.
The security guard finally saw what the ghost was wearing—a paper suit—and quickly retreated behind Leaf Snow. The headless ghost hovered in the air, still asking in a ghostly tone, “Have you seen my head?”
Leaf Snow pulled out a Jian Sword from her backpack, chuckling as she heard the ghost’s question, “I just gave it to you, didn’t I?”
The headless ghost seemed not to have heard her, still asking, “Have you seen my head?”
“…This is like a broken record,” Leaf Snow muttered. She kicked the fallen board towards the ghost, taunting, “Your head is right here.”
The moment she said that it was as if she flipped a switch. The headless ghost was agitated; it asked with a resentful tone, “Where is my head? Give it back to me—”
Before the words finished, it lunged towards Leaf Snow.
Vurq’s wrist beads began to glow brightly, blocking the ghost’s advance and knocking it back. However, the headless ghost was unrelenting and lunged towards Leaf Snow again.
Leaf Snow casually picked up a few talismans, waving them as she aimed them at the ghost, “Expel, like law dictates!”
Numerous talismans scattered and formed an array that sealed the headless ghost’s path. Each time it tried to move forward, the floating talismans pushed it back, causing it to release a resentful cry.
The security guard watched, wide-eyed, as his worldview was dramatically shifted.
Vurq handed a wine jar to Leaf Snow. She took it, popped the lid, and bit her finger, drawing a symbol on the bottom of the jar. With a forceful push, the jar emitted a golden light, trapping the still-howling headless ghost inside. She sealed it with the lid and placed a talisman on top. “All done, clean-up.”
…
When everyone returned to the security room, it wasn’t quite time for the shift change. The other guards were struggling to stay awake, gripping the talismans tightly as they listened to the distant ghostly wails. Eventually, the wails ceased, and someone dared to open the door.
Seeing the group back, one of the guards asked the faint question, “Did you catch the ghost?”
The guard nodded, “Caught it.”
He moved two chairs closer and warmly said, “Please sit, Master Leaf.”
Leaf Snow took a seat beside Vurq, placing the wine jar in her bag. Turning to the guards, she said, “The ghost is caught, but to solve this, we need to dispel its resentment.”
One of the guards asked, “How do we do that?”
Leaf Snow pondered a moment. “Before this place was developed, was there anything here?”
The guards exchanged confused looks. They were newer and didn’t know much about the area’s history.
Leaf Snow checked online and found out that this area used to be a cemetery. Initially, it was going to be developed into a private school, but a feng shui master advised against it due to bad energy from a nearby pond. The plan was scrapped, and the land changed hands multiple times before it became the New Moon Plaza.
Seeing the area’s history, Leaf Snow guessed that during the development, a grave might have been disturbed, leading to a headless spirit. She suggested, “We need to find the skeleton, reunite the head with the body, and perform a proper funeral.”
The developers were at fault for mishandling the situation, so they should take responsibility.
The guards seemed reassured but still asked anxiously, “Will it appear again?”
Leaf Snow slung her backpack over her shoulder, shaking her head with a smile, “It won’t appear again. It’s all sealed up in the wine jar now.”
At dawn, Wu Zhixue arrived at the New Moon Plaza. Leaf Snow detailed everything that had happened the night before. Wu Zhixue handed her an envelope of money, saying, “Master Leaf, don’t worry. Once we find its bones, we’ll hold the funeral at Xuanzhen Temple.”
Leaf Snow nodded. Today was Monday, and she still had classes to attend. Not lingering, she quickly said her goodbyes to Wu Zhixue and left with Vurq.
As they walked out, a young man was just passing by. Leaf Snow, as they brushed shoulders, paused thoughtfully, watching him enter the New Moon Plaza and go up to the second floor.
Wu Zhixue seemed to recognize him too; the two stood discussing something by the balcony.
“What’s up?” Vurq pulled the car over as Leaf Snow stood stationary.
Leaf Snow glanced back and shook her head, “Nothing, just saw an unlucky guy.”
The reason he’s considered unlucky is because there’s a dark aura around him, suggesting he’ll have bad luck soon. Anything that goes wrong will find him first. People with such a face are either victims of someone else’s harm or, more likely, have brought misfortune upon themselves.
Despite his handsome features, his eyes appear dull and his expression harsh, indicating a more likely connection to the latter scenario.
That’s probably why Leaf Snow didn’t say much when she saw him.
Vurq glanced over as well, then blinked in surprise, saying, “Yu Mingxuan?”
Leaf Snow was equally surprised, “Yu Ming and’s cousin?”
That explained things—Yu Mingxuan likely tried to harm Yu Ming but ended up with the backlash instead.
Vurq looked at the figure in the distance. “So, this land was bought by Yu Mingxuan’s family?”
Leaf Snow furrowed her brows. “If they knew how to use a corpse marriage to design against Yu Ming, they can’t be entirely ignorant of these matters. Yet they weren’t even careful when handling the corpse, allowing one to be headless.”
Before Vurq could answer, Leaf Snow quickly checked her watch; it was nearly 7 AM. She didn’t have time to worry about Yu Mingxuan now and pulled Vurq to run ahead. “Hurry up, we’re going to be late!”
Vurq leaned forward as she dragged him, holding her hand as they ran, smiling helplessly along with her.
On the other side, Wu Zhixue spoke, “Second Young Master Yu, the exorcist says we need to properly bury the headless ghost’s corpse and perform a ritual to dispel its resentment.”
Yu Mingxuan frowned irritably. “What’s the point of telling me this? Are you expecting me to do it?”
Wu Zhixue was taken aback, explaining, “That’s not what I meant, it’s just—”
But Yu Mingxuan dismissed him. “Stop bothering me with trivial matters. If it’s about ghosts haunting at night, no one’s gotten hurt, so I’ve already decided. Anything else? If not, I’m leaving. This place is too far and a waste of my time.”
Not long after, as he started down the stairs, he accidentally tripped on his foot, losing balance and tumbling down. He fell forward, hitting his face hard on the bricks, blood pouring from a split lip and a knocked-out tooth.
Yu Mingxuan’s face twisted in pain as he picked up a brick, glaring at it with fury. “Who put these bricks here?!”
Seeing the yellow talisman on the brick, his face darkened.
Wu Zhixue hurried over, concerned, “Second Young Master Yu…”
Yu Mingxuan brushed off his hand and wiped the blood from his face.
He expressionlessly threw the brick away and, seeing more bricks nearby, tried to suppress his anger as he ordered, “Get rid of all these bricks, I don’t want to see any more!”
Wu Zhixue hesitated, worried about further upsetting the unpredictable young master, but Yu Mingxuan was already heading downstairs.
Just as he was about to go down, he accidentally stepped on his foot again, lost his balance, and awkwardly rolled down the stairs, landing heavily on the ground floor, knocking his head hard and blacking out.
Leaf Snow returned to the Taoist temple and relayed what had happened at New Moon Plaza to Xu Zhou. While Leaf Snow was skilled in ghost-catching, she felt that Xu Zhou and Bai Ziang were more adept at performing rituals. Since she needed to return to school, she left the ritual work in their hands.
Xu Zhou took the headless ghost in the jar, and after performing the ritual, no more ghost disturbances occurred at New Moon Plaza. However, with that solved, the Eastern Suburb was still left unattended. Leaf Snow decided to let Bai Liu check it out.
Bai Liu sent the female ghost to White Crane Temple and then visited the Eastern Suburb on the way back, updating Leaf Snow over the phone.
As Leaf Snow stood on the balcony, looking at the view, a red-cloaked female ghost floated by, waving at her. Even though her disguise had mostly fallen off, everyone in the dorm knew she was a Taoist Master, yet she still couldn’t shake the habit of taking calls outside.
Bai Liu mentioned over the phone, “Master, I went to check. There weren’t many ghost sightings; they must have all been exorcised. But the place still has heavy yin energy.”
A place that gathers yin energy will always have a thick aura.
Leaf Snow replied, “Okay, I got it, thanks for the hard work.”
She hung up the phone, but her mind kept drifting back to that day in the Eastern Suburb.
When Leaf Snow left the haunted house, she felt as though someone was watching her. Although she didn’t see anyone after that, was it just an illusion?
