Chapter 70: Good Friends
The pale skin was marked with noticeable bruises, which looked somewhat alarming.
Originally, Chang Wenbin and his wife were already feeling uneasy, but after hearing the explanation from Ye Xue, they became even more creeped out.
In Wang Diemeng’s arms, Chang Yuanyuan turned pale after seeing the video on the camera and immediately started crying out, “It hurts! It hurts so much!”
Wang Diemeng quickly hugged him and comforted him, saying, “Yuanyuan, don’t cry. Mommy is here.”
Seeing this, Chang Wenbin quickly put the camera away and placed it back in his backpack.
Chang Yuanyuan continued to sob softly, still crying out in pain.
Wang Diemeng, heartbroken, held her child and looked to Ye Xue and the others for help with pleading eyes.
Ye Xue gently patted his head and then applied the consecrated water to Chang Yuanyuan’s shoulders. The sobbing slowly quieted down, and Chang Yuanyuan sniffled, shrinking into Wang Diemeng’s arms.
Ye Xue asked Xu Zhou to bring over a tube of ointment, which she passed through the flame of a talisman before applying it to both sides of Chang Yuanyuan’s shoulders.
The warm ointment gently touched the skin, and the pain that had been spreading from the injury gradually dissipated. All that remained was a slight burning sensation. Despite his young age, Chang Yuanyuan could feel the change in his body. He weakly lifted his head, his eyes still glistening with tears, and looked at Ye Xue.
Seeing that the child was no longer crying out in pain, Chang Wenbin and his wife both breathed a sigh of relief.
Wang Diemeng gently stroked her son’s hair and softly asked, “Where else does it hurt?”
Chang Yuanyuan slightly shook his head.
The camera hadn’t captured the real ghostly presence, and Ye Xue could only see a few hints from the video.
To find out what truly happened, they would need to visit Wang Diemeng’s new home.
Ye Xue went to the side hall to draw a protective talisman, placed it in a small sachet, and threaded it with a red string before putting it around Chang Yuanyuan’s neck.
Ye Xue’s voice softened as she spoke, “Yuanyuan, wear this, and you won’t feel pain anymore.”
Children are the most vulnerable to supernatural events, but with a protective talisman, spirits won’t dare to approach them.
Since it wasn’t suitable to deal with certain matters with Chang Yuanyuan present, to avoid frightening the child, Chang Wenbin and his wife decided to take him to his grandparents’ house for a while. They agreed on a time to come back and left the玄真观 (Xuan Zhen Temple) with their child.
Once they were gone, Xu Zhou finally asked, “Master, what exactly did Chang Yuanyuan encounter?”
Ye Xue answered honestly, “I don’t know.”
“But…” Ye Xue thought about what Chang Wenbin had mentioned earlier and said, “It seems like they disturbed something when they moved into their new home.”
But the specifics would have to wait until they visited the Chang family to find out.
Yu Qi still hadn’t returned.
Ye Xue was putting her tools back into her bag. The talismans she used during her trip to the resort were almost used up, so she quickly drew a dozen more and stuffed them into her bag.
The ghost woman’s bones had already been spiritually purified, and the lingering evil energy had almost dissipated. Ye Xue planned to have someone help find a proper place to bury the bones so the spirit could finally rest in peace.
She had just repackaged the bones in red cloth when Bai Liu rushed in and asked, “Master, do you have any food? I’m starving!”
Seeing the red cloth on the table, he thought it was some sort of snack and was about to grab a piece when he saw the bones inside, lying quietly.
“What the hell is this?!” Bai Liu nearly jumped in fright.
Ye Xue glanced at him and carefully wrapped the bones back up. “Can’t you tell? It’s bones. I told you I brought back a ghost’s bones from the resort.”
Bai Liu said, “I thought you’d already buried it.”
Ye Xue handed him a few packs of crackers and said, “It’s not that quick. The purification just finished after seven days.”
When Bai Liu reached for a cracker, about to eat it after touching the bones, Ye Xue knocked on the table and reminded him, “Hey hey hey, you just touched the bones and now you want to eat? Be careful of getting poisoned!”
Bai Liu quickly put the cracker down, ran out to wash his hands, and rushed back.
Ye Xue finished packing her things, looked at Bai Liu enjoying his snack, and suddenly called out, “Bai Liu, my disciple.”
“Huh?” Bai Liu was startled by her serious tone and replied, “What’s going on?”
Ye Xue smiled and said, “I’m going to take you in for some overtime.”
When Chang Wenbin and Wang Diemeng received a call from Ye Xue to come pick someone up, they were surprised to see a different person with her.
Ye Xue introduced, “This is my disciple, Bai Liu. The one you met before, Xu Zhou, is his senior.”
When Bai Liu wasn’t being playful, he was quite convincing, so Chang Wenbin greeted him, “Hello, Daoist Bai.”
Since they knew there was something odd in their home, Chang Wenbin and his wife felt uneasy. They didn’t dare go home right away. After dropping off their child at the grandparents’ house and making sure everything was settled, they called Ye Xue.
The four of them took the elevator up, and both Chang Wenbin and Wang Diemeng felt increasingly nervous as they neared their home.
Chang Wenbin took out the keys and opened the door. There was nothing unusual at first.
Ye Xue surveyed the room and her gaze slowly landed on a small bunny plushie sitting on the couch. “Whose thing is that?”
The plushie was emitting a faint aura of evil energy.
At first, Ye Xue had thought the couple had disturbed some taboo when they moved into their new home, which caused the negative energy to attach itself. But now it seemed they had come into contact with a haunted object, and something dark had latched onto them.
The bunny plushie, with its evil energy, was the perfect proof.
Chang Wenbin explained, “That’s a gift my son got for his birthday. He likes it.”
Ye Xue picked up the plushie and gave it a quick glance. Just as the evil energy was about to spread to her hands, she formed a hand seal and discreetly forced the energy back.
At that moment, a familiar yet eerie laugh suddenly echoed through the room. “Hehe, did some new friends come to play with me?”
At the same time, three voices screamed, “Oh my god!”
Chang Wenbin and Wang Diemeng froze in shock, staring at Bai Liu in disbelief.
It seemed like this Daoist Bai was even more scared than they were.
Ye Xue stepped on Bai Liu’s foot and forced a smile. “It’s nothing. I accidentally stepped on his foot, and that’s why he cried out. Right, disciple?”
Ye Xue gave Bai Liu a warning look.
Bai Liu, in pain and with tears in his eyes, nodded weakly.
But after this, Chang Wenbin and Wang Diemeng were so frightened they almost wanted to run out of the door immediately.
The couple, pale-faced, tightly gripped the protective talisman Ye Xue had given them, seeking reassurance from its presence.
Seeing how terrified they were, Ye Xue suggested, “Why don’t you two go to the bedroom and hide? Bai Liu and I will handle things in the living room.”
It was also a good opportunity for Bai Liu to perform a soul projection. Having outsiders around would make it more difficult. With the protective talisman, the ghosts probably wouldn’t dare to come near.
The couple quickly nodded.
Ye Xue led them back to the bedroom, shut the door behind them, and placed an anti-evil talisman on it. She then surveyed the room. The eerie voice had only lasted for a moment, and it was soon as quiet as if it had never been there.
Ye Xue whispered, “Quickly find a place for your soul projection.”
Bai Liu nodded heavily.
Ye Xue looked around the empty room, casually setting the bunny plushie aside, and said, “You wanted someone to play with, right? I’m here now. Why don’t you show yourself?”
“Do you want to play with me?” The ghostly voice came again, this time with a chill.
Ye Xue responded firmly, “Of course.”
—”Alright, then come and play with me!”
A sudden chill approached, and a pair of icy hands landed on Ye Xue’s shoulder, nearly freezing her entire body. “I’m here!”
Ye Xue quickly turned around and grabbed the ghost’s hand with a firm grip.
When she saw the ghost’s appearance, she froze for a moment, dumbfounded. “Uh…”
The ghost before her wore a pink dress, with a few cute little bunnies embroidered on the hem. The ghost floated in mid-air, almost upside down, extending her hand to grab Ye Xue’s shoulder.
Her face was deathly pale, with eyes so hollow that only the whites were visible. Red blood oozed from all seven orifices.
But despite how terrifying she appeared, she was no more than a ghostly child under seven years old.
Ye Xue yanked on her hand, pulling the ghost up.
The little ghost’s feet hung suspended as she was forced to float near Ye Xue.
Ye Xue glanced at her, noting that the ghost was just at chest height, not counting the floating height difference.
The little ghost wailed, “You’re bullying me! I don’t want to be your friend anymore!”
Ye Xue hadn’t expected to encounter such a young ghost, but thinking back to the video she had seen on the camera, it made sense. Only a mischievous child would be able to pull someone around and do such energetic things.
Ye Xue had no patience to comfort the ghost and directly asked, “Stop crying. Tell me, why are you scaring this family’s child?”
The little ghost sobbed, “He wanted to be my friend!”
Bai Liu had set his body in place and floated over with the Soul Hooking Rope.
The little ghost, sensing the malicious energy emanating from him, cried even louder, “Oh no, the police!”
When ghosts with guilty consciences encounter an official like the “Yin Chai” (Yin Officials), it’s like a bad person meeting the police – they panic.
Bai Liu was stunned and asked Ye Xue, “Is she the one scaring people?”
The little ghost continued crying, her mournful wails causing Ye Xue’s ears to hurt.
Ye Xue twitched her mouth, “If I had to guess…”
This little ghost knew how to cry. Ye Xue looked down at her and asked, “What did you mean earlier about wanting to be friends?”
The little ghost pointed at the pink bunny plushie they had seen earlier, saying aggrievedly, “He took my bunny, so he’s my new friend.”
Ye Xue stared at the plushie and suddenly understood.
The cursed item had been sent by someone else.
Ye Xue continued to ask, “You said he’s your new friend, so do you have other friends?”
The little ghost nodded, “He wouldn’t let me play with the little boy, said he’d take me to meet new friends, and then brought me here.”
So it was like this.
When the Chang family celebrated Chang Yuanyuan’s birthday, someone gave them the cursed bunny plushie as a gift. That’s how the little ghost attached itself to him.
With so many gifts, the cursed plushie had gone unnoticed.
Ye Xue told Bai Liu to use the Soul Hooking Rope to restrain the little ghost and then called Chang Wenbin and his wife into the master bedroom.
At first, when Chang Wenbin and Wang Diemeng heard the ghost’s crying from inside the room, they were terrified and clutched the protective talismans Ye Xue had given them, too scared to move. As the crying gradually faded, they wanted to know what was happening but didn’t dare to open the door.
It wasn’t until they heard Ye Xue knocking that they learned the ghost had been caught, and only then did they come out.
Seeing Bai Liu and the ghost no longer present, they were somewhat surprised by Bai Liu’s absence.
Ye Xue explained the whole situation to them, then asked, “Do any of your son’s classmates have a child who recently recovered from a serious illness? The person who first comes into contact with the cursed item will fall ill until someone either captures the ghost or transfers the curse to someone else, and only then will their health be restored.”
If Chang Wenbin and his wife hadn’t noticed something was wrong with their child and taken Chang Yuanyuan to Xuan Zhen Temple, in time, the lingering evil energy would have caused Yuanyuan to fall seriously ill as well.
The person who gave the cursed gift likely knew some occult practices but couldn’t deal with the ghost that clung to the child, so they decided to transfer the curse to another child.
Chang Wenbin suddenly remembered something, and his face changed. “Yes, I know someone. A colleague’s child just got over a serious illness and had to stay in the hospital for a long time. That’s why they didn’t bring their child here. They just dropped off the gift and left.”
Wang Diemeng’s face turned red with anger. “How dare they! Just because their kid was sick, they think they can harm mine?”
Chang Wenbin gave a bitter smile. “You know, I was promoted recently. It was a competition for the department head position between me and him. After he didn’t get the position, he came over to comfort me and told me not to feel guilty. I thought he was being sincere, but I never expected…”
It wasn’t about not being bothered at all. He was scheming to use their child.
Wang Diemeng gritted her teeth. “I’m not going to let him get away with this!”
The little ghost had been taken by Bai Liu, and the cursed bunny plushie had lost its power.
However, just seeing the item had given the Chang family a psychological scar, so Ye Xue decided to take it away as well.
Chang Wenbin handed Ye Xue a large red envelope and thanked her several times.
He then hesitated and asked, “That Bai…”
Bai Liu thought they had figured something out and hurriedly asked, “I didn’t give myself away, did I?”
When the little ghost heard the word “Bai,” her eyes widened in surprise and joy as she looked at Bai Liu.
Ye Xue gave a dry laugh and explained, “Hmm, he had some business to attend to, so he left first.”
Since Bai Liu still needed to return to his body, Ye Xue told them not to see them off and walked downstairs with Bai Liu and the little ghost.
Bai Liu was about to return to his body when the little ghost blinked her eyes, no longer afraid of him, as if she had discovered something new. She hugged Bai Liu’s leg and asked, “Bai Wuchang, can you give me an autograph?”
Bai Liu was stunned. “Huh?”
Ye Xue: “…?”
