Chapter 67: White Bones
After returning from the Yu family, Xu Zhou couldn’t help but keep an eye on the way Ye Xue and Yu Qi interacted.
The more he observed, the more he noticed unusual things.
Yu Qi treated Ye Xue in a very special way. When the two stood together, there was an unspoken understanding between them that no one else could interfere with.
Even the others at Xuan Zhen Temple, including the temple master Bai Zi’ang, would naturally lower their demeanor in front of Yu Qi. Even Bai Liu, who usually had no filter, would become more restrained when facing Yu Qi. It seemed that the only person who could interact with Yu Qi normally in the temple was Ye Xue.
Ye Xue was practicing a new talisman.
Xu Zhou, who had come to help, couldn’t hold back any longer and finally asked the question that had been on his mind: “Shishu, you and Mr. Yu…”
Ye Xue didn’t immediately understand what he meant, pausing her work and looking at him. “Hmm?”
She had used up most of the talismans she left at the temple and, since school was starting soon, Ye Xue wanted to make sure she had enough on hand in case she got busy and forgot to draw more. So, she decided to draw a few extra.
Ye Xue looked at him, confused.
Xu Zhou also realized his question was a bit abrupt since it was a personal matter, so he quickly changed the subject. “It’s nothing. School starts in two days. Is there anything I can help you prepare?”
Ye Xue placed the talisman with the wet cinnabar aside, then finally understood Xu Zhou’s hesitation. Seeing him unsure, she couldn’t help but smile.
Ye Xue nodded. “Yes, I’m with Yu Qi.”
Xu Zhou didn’t look up, continuing to pack her things while responding, “I made some snacks earlier, you can take them to school… hmm? Wait!”
He almost thought he had misheard her. “Shishu, what did you just say?”
Ye Xue slowly explained, “I said, I’m in a relationship with Yu Qi.”
Xu Zhou had only guessed that Yu Qi might have been pursuing Ye Xue recently, but he never expected it to jump straight to the relationship part, leaving him stunned.
Ye Xue didn’t give him much time to react.
She remembered she hadn’t taken her cotton doll to the side hall for some spiritual training, so she picked it up and left, turning back to remind him, “Shidi, please remember to tidy up the talismans.”
Xu Zhou, still in a daze, nodded sluggishly.
Ye Xue’s expression was so calm as if being in a relationship with Yu Qi was the most natural thing in the world.
Although Xu Zhou had already somewhat expected it, hearing it directly still left him shaken.
As he walked in a daze, he started packing away the talismans Ye Xue had drawn, nearly packing her luggage by mistake.
Bai Liu, walking by with a Switch, noticed Xu Zhou staring off into space in the room and walked in. “Shixiong, what are you doing?”
When Bai Liu saw the things in Xu Zhou’s hands, he understood. “Oh, you’re packing for Shishu. Do you need help?”
Without waiting for Xu Zhou to answer, Bai Liu casually began helping him with the packing. “By the way, I just saw Ye Xue Shishu. Did she tell you when school starts?”
Xu Zhou was silent for a moment before replying, “…The day after tomorrow.”
Bai Liu didn’t notice anything odd about Xu Zhou. After finishing the packing, he left, taking a few ghost-repelling talismans with him.
Xu Zhou sighed quietly.
Ignorance is bliss.
The day before the Lantern Festival happened to be the first day of school at Haicheng University.
When Ye Xue returned to her dorm, her roommates had already arrived.
A group of them were gathered together, watching a video of He Siqi’s niece.
He Siqi casually opened a video, and He Xuan, dressed in a pink jacket, seemed to notice something. She looked toward the camera and smiled.
The others couldn’t help but exclaim, “So cute!”
Wei Caining even commented, “She’s so young but already knows how to look at the camera, impressive.”
Ye Xue had just put down her luggage and leaned in to take a look. Her gaze gradually shifted to the longevity lock around He Xuan’s neck.
He Xuan held the longevity lock and smiled happily.
He Siqi noticed Ye Xue’s gaze and smiled. “She likes this gift.”
Ye Xue smiled gently.
Lantern Festival fell on a Monday this year, and the school didn’t give a holiday, so classes continued as usual.
However, Ye Xue had no classes in the afternoon, and the four roommates planned to go watch a movie outside the school. Ye Xue also brought some tangyuan (sweet dumplings) back with her.
On the way back, they happened to encounter snow. The tiny snowflakes fluttered down, and the four girls almost ran back to the dorm.
By the time they returned to the dorm, it was almost nine o’clock.
That night, Ye Xue received many text messages with holiday blessings. Aside from the ones from everyone at Xuan Zhen Temple, most of the messages came from VIP clients.
The messages kept coming, almost draining her phone’s battery.
While charging her phone, Ye Xue had time to slowly sort through the messages. She replied to each one with a simple “Happy Lantern Festival.” When it came to Yu Qi, she added a smiley face.
The moment she sent the message, she received a call from Yu Qi.
His voice was soft. “A-Xue, Happy Lantern Festival.”
Ye Xue couldn’t help but laugh. “Didn’t I just send you a message?”
But Yu Qi replied seriously, “You can never have too many blessings.”
Ye Xue heard the sound of wind on the other end of the line, as though he was on the move, and she asked, “Yu Qi, where are you?”
His breathing was slightly hurried. After a while, he calmed down and replied, “I’m downstairs.”
Downstairs?
Ye Xue thought for a moment, grabbed her coat, and ran to the hallway. Sure enough, she saw a familiar figure downstairs.
Snowflakes fell on Yu Qi, but he seemed unaware.
Then, as she heard footsteps, he turned around just in time to catch her and hold her close.
Ye Xue had just hung up the phone, her voice full of surprise. “How did you get here?”
Yu Qi noticed she was dressed lightly and immediately took off his scarf, carefully wrapping it around her before saying, “I finished my work, and since I was passing by, I thought I’d come to see you.”
After the New Year, Yu Qi had become very busy, often returning late to the temple, even at Lantern Festival.
It seemed like he had just finished his work and rushed over. There was still some fatigue in his expression, but his gaze towards Ye Xue was still warm.
Ye Xue said, “Wait for me a moment.”
She ran upstairs, and after a while, returned, holding a bowl of tangyuan (sweet rice dumplings).
Yexue pulled him to a nearby chair and said, “It’s still warm.”
On the night of the Lantern Festival, the two shared a small bowl of tangyuan.
The filling of the dumplings was made of sesame, and when they took a bite, it instantly melted in their mouths.
Yu Qi only ate a few, noticing that Yexue seemed to enjoy the tangyuan, so he gave her the rest.
Afterward, seeing Yexue almost getting some on her lips, he pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped her mouth.
Yexue looked up at him, and for a few seconds, Yu Qi’s gaze lingered on her moist lips before he gently moved his eyes away.
They stayed downstairs until the dormitory was about to lock the doors.
The dorm supervisor saw them from a distance and called out, “Students, it’s time to close the door!”
Yexue heard the call and turned to Yu Qi, saying, “Should I head back now?”
Yu Qi gently touched the stray hairs on her forehead and nodded.
It had only been two days since they parted, but he already couldn’t stop thinking about her.
Yexue took a few steps and then noticed Yu Qi still standing in the same spot. She quickly ran back and hugged him, then tilted her head to give him a kiss on the corner of his mouth.
Yu Qi, with his face close to hers, lingered near her lips for a moment before slowly releasing her.
He softly said, “Go back now.”
Yexue nodded in response before heading back to the dorm.
When Yexue returned, her roommates hadn’t noticed she had gone out, but when they saw her come back with a chill in the air, Wei Caining was surprised. “How could you go out in this cold, Ah Xue?”
Yexue smiled and explained, “Someone came to find me.”
They didn’t ask further, but Gao Lan curiously glanced at Yexue’s lips, which seemed redder than before.
She didn’t think too much of it, though, and quickly forgot about it as she went to the bathroom to shower.
The alarm clock rang, and He Siqi and Gao Lan were still in bed.
When Yexue and Wei Caining finished getting ready, He Siqi finally struggled out of bed, still looking dazed.
She sat by the bed for a couple of seconds before slowly getting up.
Beside her, Gao Lan had a similarly strange expression.
Wei Caining put her textbooks in her bag and, seeing the two roommates looking like they hadn’t slept well, asked, “What’s with you two? Didn’t sleep well or something?”
They had been in the dorm for half a year already, so it didn’t make sense if they were just now having trouble sleeping.
He Siqi shook her head with a strange look. “I had a nightmare.” She dreamt she was in class.
The worst part was that when she woke up, she could still remember what she learned in the dream. It was terrifying!
