Chapter 63: Snowflakes

After learning that Bai Liu also had a Switch, Ye Xue set some ground rules with him, advising him not to get too absorbed in gaming, or else she’d report it and confiscate it. After all, he had a history of playing games all day and forgetting to check his phone.

If it weren’t for Bai Liu ignoring his phone earlier, Ye Xue would never have mistakenly dialed the call to Yu Qi.

On the way back, Ye Xue told Yu Qi about the incident. At first, it felt a bit embarrassing when she made the wrong call, especially when they weren’t that familiar. But now that they were together, looking back at it, it just seemed funny.

However, when Yu Qi learned about it, he didn’t seem too pleased. He softly asked, “At that time… was it just a mistake?”

Ye Xue noticed something was off in his tone and paused for a moment. Yu Qi’s eyelashes gently lowered, and his slightly pursed lips made him appear somewhat aggrieved.

Seeing her boyfriend acting awkwardly, Ye Xue suddenly understood and laughed, wrapping her arm around his, saying, “Doesn’t that just prove we’re fated to be together?”

Yu Qi looked up at her, his dark eyes seeming to light up, like a firework blooming in his gaze.

Ye Xue smiled in response.

Yu Qi, gazing at her smiling eyes, felt a stir in his heart. He leaned in and kissed the corner of her mouth.

Before Ye Xue could respond, a noise from outside interrupted, as something fell to the ground.

They both turned toward the sound. Bai Liu stood in the doorway, stunned, holding a stack of books, most of which had fallen to the floor. He glanced outside and muttered, “It’s not even dark yet…”

Ye Xue raised an eyebrow, and Bai Liu, sensing the death stare, quickly shut his mouth and bent down to pick up the books, saying, “I didn’t see anything. You two carry on!”

After gathering the books, Bai Liu turned to leave.

“Wait!” Ye Xue called out calmly.

Bai Liu turned back with a pitiful look on his face. “Aunt, please, forgive me! The prime minister’s belly can hold a boat!”

Ye Xue was confused. “I just asked you to close the door.”

Bai Liu quickly responded, “Oh!” He skillfully closed the door with his elbow while holding the books.

Just as he was about to place the books in the adjacent hall, he saw Xu Zhou walking toward him. He hurried over to greet him, “Senior Brother, where are you going?”

Xu Zhou, helping Bai Liu with some tasks, casually replied, “There’s something I don’t quite understand. I want to ask Aunt for clarification.”

Bai Liu quickly interrupted, “Aunt is busy!”

Xu Zhou looked at him with confusion, clearly puzzled by Bai Liu’s exaggerated reaction.

Bai Liu, realizing his response seemed a bit too dramatic, cleared his throat and explained, “Uh, well, I just went to find Aunt, and she was writing a paper. We shouldn’t bother her.”

After a moment of thought, Xu Zhou nodded, “Alright, I’ll go find her later in the evening.”

Bai Liu secretly sighed in relief, but then he felt a sense of unease.

Why was he covering for them? This wasn’t some secret affair.

A few days later, Ye Xue received a notice from the Dao Association to attend a ritual at Longhu Mountain, where she would officially receive her Tian Shi certification.

When Yu Qi came to pick her up, Ye Xue was still looking at her certificate in the car.

She turned to him and said, “This photo makes me look kind of silly.”

Yu Qi glanced at the photo on the certificate. In it, she was wearing her ceremonial robes, smiling confidently at the camera. The sunlight made her seem almost glowing, in stark contrast to her usual demeanor.

Yu Qi stared at the photo for several seconds before slowly replying, “No, it looks cute.”

Ye Xue smiled, “Mr. Yu, your filter must be at least 800 meters thick.”

Yu Qi looked at her, confused by her comment, and seriously responded, “No filter. I think you’re cute.”

Their driver, Uncle Wang, who had been waiting a while, noticed the time and finally interrupted, “Sir, Miss Ye, where shall we go?”

Yu Qi met Ye Xue’s eyes and said, “Let’s go to the Yu residence first. I have something for you.”

Ye Xue didn’t hurry to go back to the temple, so she nodded.

Ye Xue waited for Yu Qi in the living room, and it wasn’t long before he came over holding an elegant velvet box.

He sat beside her and opened the red box.

Inside was a necklace carved from diamonds in the shape of a snowflake, with countless tiny diamonds coming together to form a dazzling, radiant snowflake.

Yu Qi picked up the necklace and placed it around Ye Xue’s neck. “When I saw it at the auction, I felt it would be perfect for you.”

He fastened the clasp, smiled, and softly said, “This is snow that will never melt.”

Just like Ye Xue, he added silently in his heart.

The necklace, lying next to her talisman, which had once been a cold, lifeless object, now seemed to emit a warmth in this moment.

Ye Xue looked up at him, and Yu Qi said nothing, only smiling as he leaned down and gently pressed his forehead against hers.

Assistant Zhou walked in with a document, but when he saw the two of them in the living room, he paused, then quickly walked past without looking at them, heading toward the study.

Noticing that Yu Qi still had work to do, Ye Xue spoke up, “You go ahead and take care of what you need to. I’ll take a walk nearby.”

Yu Qi had originally planned to accompany her to the study, but seeing that she seemed more interested in the outdoors, he nodded. “Alright.”

The villa area was surrounded by lush greenery, and as Ye Xue walked along the path, she admired the trees lining the streets.

She was enjoying the scenery when she suddenly heard hurried footsteps. Before she could turn around, someone embraced her from behind, pulling her into a warm hug.

The woman held her tightly, calling out with a mix of gentleness and panic, “Nan Nan, Mommy found you. My baby…”

Ye Xue froze for a moment and didn’t immediately pull away.

The woman looked up at her, tears streaming down her face as she continued calling, “Nan Nan.”

Ye Xue didn’t recognize her and asked in confusion, “Excuse me, who are you?”

The woman only hugged her tighter.

Footsteps approached again from nearby, and a young man, panting, rushed over, calling out urgently, “Mom, you’re scaring me!”

The handsome young man took his mother’s hand and led her to his side, apologizing to Ye Xue. “I’m so sorry, my mother’s emotions aren’t stable. She didn’t scare you, did she?”

Ye Xue stared at the young man in surprise.

He had a well-defined face, his features dignified and upright, with an aura of righteousness. However, there was a shadowy, unsettling dark energy around his brows, an omen of bloodshed.

The woman, still dazed, murmured to herself, “I need to find my daughter…”

The young man, Yu Ming, gently comforted her, “Your daughter is at home waiting for you. Let me take you back to her, alright?”

The woman nodded absentmindedly.

Yu Ming guided her back toward the house and, turning back to Ye Xue, again apologized, “I’m truly sorry.”

Ye Xue noticed the dark aura on his forehead and shook her head. “It’s fine. I wasn’t scared.”

As they were about to leave, she took a talisman out of her pocket and handed it to him. “Here, this is for you.”

Yu Ming hesitated for a moment, seeing it was a talisman, but didn’t comment on it. Instead, he accepted it gracefully and said, “Thank you.”

Ye Xue could tell from his appearance that he didn’t believe in spiritual matters, but since she had left the temple in a hurry, she only had a single protective talisman on her. If she had more time, she would have given him a wooden one from the temple, passing it off as a souvenir from the scenic area.

As Yu Ming helped his mother back home, the maid hurried to assist them when she saw them approaching.

Upon seeing the maid, Yu Ming’s mother once again embraced her and cried out, “Nan Nan, Mommy found you!”

The maid, already accustomed to this, calmly reassured her, “I’ll take you to your room to rest.”

The butler took Yu Minghe’s coat and noticed that he was holding a yellow talisman. Thinking that Yu Minghe had encountered some frauds or charlatans again, he asked, “Young Master Yu, do you need me to throw this away for you?”

Yu Minghe glanced at the talisman in his hand. He had intended to throw it away, but when he thought of those clear, bright eyes, something made him put it in his pocket instead, saying, “It’s fine. I’ll keep it for now.”

When Ye Xue returned to the Yu family’s house, Yu Qi was still in the study handling company matters.

She was thinking about the omen of bloodshed and, although she wanted to help, she knew there was little she could do to change someone’s perspective. She could only hope that the talisman wouldn’t be discarded and might have some effect.

The butler, Grandpa Liu, brought over a cup of hot milk and a few plates of pastries.

Noticing that Ye Xue seemed lost in thought, he asked with concern, “Miss Ye, did something happen outside?”

Ye Xue had originally planned to shake her head, but recalling the encounter, she asked, “Grandpa Liu, I met a woman outside who hugged me and said I was her daughter. Do you know which family she’s from? Has her daughter still not been found?”

When Ye Xue mentioned this, the butler immediately understood who she was talking about and sighed. “You must have met the lady from the Yu family. The Yu family doesn’t have a daughter. After that car accident many years ago, Mrs. Yu has had unstable mental health. She’s always believed that she had a daughter who went missing. But everyone around here knows that the Yu family only ever had one son.”

Ye Xue picked up on the key detail. “What car accident?”

Grandpa Liu thought for a moment before replying, “I don’t remember the details clearly since it happened so long ago, but I recall that Mrs. Yu and her family were on their way to visit her parents when they had a serious car accident. The three of them were badly injured. Yu Minghe, Mrs. Yu’s son, nearly lost his life. He had to be resuscitated for a long time before they managed to save him. I believe this traumatic event is what caused Mrs. Yu’s mental instability.”

Listening to the butler’s account and hearing about the disturbances caused by the charlatans at the Yu family home, Ye Xue understood why Yu Minghe would be so dismissive of these things.

If something like that had happened to someone around her, she would have already made a scene.

Yet, when she had handed him the talisman earlier, Yu Minghe hadn’t gotten angry at all—he had even accepted it.

He must have quite a good temper, Ye Xue thought.
