Arc 7: The Lucky Girl of the 1970s (11)

“Come on, old woman, stop talking.”

The old man sitting in the main seat of the main hall was puffing on his pipe, and every wrinkle on his face was filled with worry.

In the past, Xie Zhuzi was the most silent one in this family, letting Miao Fengmei be the master of the family. This was the first time he spoke out.

“Old Third is like this now, so don’t mess around.”

As he spoke, Xie Zhuzi took two more puffs of his cigarette.

His back bent even more, and his whole body seemed to be pressed down by a huge rock.

“You are such a good fellow, Xie Zhuzi. I, Miao Fengmei, have been married to you for nearly forty years. I have given birth to three sons and one daughter for you. I have also helped your Xie family build such a magnificent red brick house on this land. Who dares to say that it is not this Miao Fengmei’s credit? Now you are saying this to me. Have you lost your conscience?”

For a long time, Xie Zhuzi, the head of the family, was like an old ox, only responsible for working and earning work points.

Miao Fengmei was the only one who had the final say in the family, and Xie Zhuzi had no say in the family affairs. Miao Fengmei had also gotten used to this honest man.

Now that Xie Zhuzi was meddling in her behavior, instead of making Miao Fengmei restrain herself, it aroused anger in her heart.

She felt that if she didn’t suppress this evil spirit, anyone in the family would be able to challenge her authority in the future.

“Miao Fengmei, shut up first.”

Miao Dashan was impatient to listen to these nagging words. He loudly scolded his cousin.

Then, he stared at Xie Changzheng beside him and asked in a deep voice, “Changzheng, what happened to your leg? Are you going home to visit your family now? How many days of vacation do you have?”

He still had a little expectation in his heart. Perhaps Xie Changzheng just had a normal leg injury, and he came back this time to recuperate while visiting his relatives.

But Xie Changzheng’s answer disappointed him.

“Two months ago, our battalion was patrolling the border. Who knew that the Vietnamese had buried mines there in advance and ambushed us? In this war, 76 soldiers in the battalion died. Because of that minefield, many soldiers’ lives were saved, but they were also disabled. I was lucky. I only injured my leg. Even if I am lame in the future, I can still walk with difficulty.”

Xie Changzheng’s tone was very heavy.

People who have not experienced war never know the cruelty of war. Since Xie Changzheng joined the army, he has experienced too many separations and deaths.

The brother, who was still chatting with you about his relatives in his hometown in the camp the night before and shyly showing you the photo of his wife, the next second, became a cold corpse on the battlefield. Perhaps, there was no corpse at all, as he was directly blown into pieces.

The year Xie Changzheng just joined the army, he went to the battlefield for the first time.

At that time, China’s weapons were not well developed, but the enemy’s guns and artillery were very fierce. In that war, only two people survived in their entire team. The other one was Xie Changzheng’s squad leader, whose legs were blown off.

Before going to the battlefield every time, Xie Changzheng didn’t know whether he could come back alive, so he wrote a thick stack of suicide notes. If he died, he hoped that the surviving comrades and leaders would arrange his afterlife and handle his pension according to the contents of the suicide notes.

Fortunately, these suicide notes piled up thicker and thicker, but they were never used.

“Then you are now…”

Miao Dashan felt very disappointed.

Would the army want a disabled soldier?

Didn’t Xie Changzheng mean that he would definitely be discharged from the army?

“I will retain my military rank, but I will have to wait until my injury is healed. If…if I am really left with a disability, I will definitely not be able to stay in the army. But if I recover well, I will treat this period of time as a visit to my family and recuperate. After passing the physical examination, I will immediately report back to the army.”

“This period will take about two or three months, and I will stay in my hometown to recuperate during this time.”

Xie Changzheng lowered his head.

Others only thought that he was sad and lost because of his physical disability. No one saw his dark eyes.

“However, before I came here, the military doctor said that my calf was a comminuted fracture, and the possibility of recovery was not great. There was a 99% chance that I would be disabled. If I want to completely recover, it is probably a miracle in the history of medicine.”

The corners of Xie Changzheng’s mouth curled up, but this sarcastic smile was not seen by anyone because he lowered his head.

In his previous life, he did have a comminuted fracture, but in this life, because he was reborn on the battlefield, he was able to avoid that injury to the greatest extent possible. Now his leg was also injured, but it was a minor injury that could be recovered.

The army, thinking of his great contribution this time and the fact that his leg injury did require some time to recover, specially approved a long vacation for him to go home and visit his family.

Of course, he would not say these words to these ‘relatives’.

He was just waiting for them to show their ugly faces after learning that he was ‘disabled’ and then say goodbye to this family that ruined his wife and daughter, although Xie Changzheng knew that he was also guilty.

Xie Changzheng had lived on this land since he was a child. He had long been accustomed to the customs of this land and followed them step by step.

As long as the parents are alive, the family will not be divided.

Xie Changzheng had never thought that there was anything wrong with handing over the allowance he earned to his mother before the family was divided.

Although he earned more and his two brothers earned less, he was not in his hometown, and his parents, wife, and daughter still relied on his two brothers to take care of them. Helping out some of his brothers was a matter of course in Xie Changzheng’s view.

Not only did he do this, but his comrades in the army also did the same.

In this era, it has become a norm for children who were born in the countryside and became workers or soldiers to support their brothers and sisters who are not doing well. Those who are unwilling to contribute and sacrifice are the outliers of this era.

  1. Devi says:

So, he’s still the original, reborn, and felt guilty for the death of his only child. Okay. But, I’m not fully convinced that he cares that much about his wife.

As we’ve known that mentally-disturbed patients have lucid period, in which they have more clarity than usual. I guess, that’s how XZX knows some events that happened after XW’s death (after she lost her mind). But, she readily agree to the divorce when MFM brought it up. If he’s good to her, he would notice how physically broken she’s after their marriage in those two visits over the years. Her physical change would be jarring and obvious because of how long they’ve not met in between. If he’s good to her after XW’s death, she wouldn’t as easily agree to their divorce.
