Arc 1: Silly Girl (52)

She used 20 cents to buy a box of shortbread cookies for her mother, who had never enjoyed a fortune. She also spent another 10 cents to buy five bunches of candied haws to distribute to her younger brother and sisters.

Just when she was excitedly preparing to return to her parent’s home and tell them that her life was booming, Xu Baozhu looked at her with a sarcastic look and then whispered a word of ‘Fu Di Mo1扶弟魔, fúdìmó: (neologism c. 2017, a play on 伏地魔) woman who devotes herself to supporting her little brother (assisting him with his studies, giving money to help him buy a house, etc).’.

She might have thought that her voice was so small that she couldn’t hear her as she was already outside the yard, but Liu Zhaodi heard her clearly. In an instant, all her joy and excitement were ruined by the ‘Fu Di Mo’ words.

Liu Zhaodi didn’t know where she heard the word ‘Fu Di Mo*’ in Xu Baozhu’s mouth, but just from the literal meaning, Liu Zhaodi felt extremely humiliated.

Growing up, she suffered the pain of not having a brother. Her grandparents didn’t like her mother, and they also disliked her and her sisters. When the family was separated, they almost had to leave the house because they didn’t have a son.

Also because her mother gave birth to six daughters in a row, no one came to propose marriage until she was sixteen, for fear that she would be destined to have daughters just like her mother.

Fortunately, when Liu Zhaodi was seventeen, her mother finally gave birth to a big fat boy for her father. It was only after her brother was born that the Xu family came to propose marriage and decided to marry her and Xu Erbao.

There was no need to mention the grievances Liu Zhaodi had suffered since she was a child, but Liu Zhaodi’s mother was also a bit brave. She had never thought of letting her married daughter pay for her parents’ family. Her mother was afraid that their daughters would have a hard time in her husband’s family.

After Liu Zhaodi married into the Xu family, except for the gifts her mother-in-law prepared to take home during the holidays, Liu Zhaodi never subsidized her parents’ family in private.

Now that she finally had some spare money, what was the matter with spending some money to honor her mother? Why should she be insulted by Xu Baozhu as if she was a thief?

“Our words may not work in the ears of our parents-in-law, but what about Dabao and Erbao? I can tell that these days Xiao San is getting more and more proud. Not only does she look down on us, but she even looks down on her two brothers. As long as Dabao and Erbao are not stupid, they should be able to sense it. It’s just that Xiao San is their biological sister, so they were temporarily deceived.”

Bai Xiaohua is almost on the same page as Liu Zhaodi: “After all, our parents-in-law have to rely on Dabao and Erbao to support them in their old age. Let us work hard next to our men, and then let our men work hard on our parents-in-law. Sister-in-law, I am not a heartless person. As long as Xiao San does not go too far, what is hers will be hers. But if Xiao San goes too far, she can’t blame us, right?”

Liu Zhaodi remained silent, but Bai Xiaohua knew that her younger sister-in-law, who had always been honest, had taken her words to heart.

Fu di mo means something on the lines of how the older sister sacrifices so much to raise the spoilt younger brother? So is this girl cussing out everyone else like she’s sacrificing so much for them??? Weirdo urgh
