Chapter 2: The Immortal’s Blessing
Lin Jin couldn’t make out the exact shape of the black mist, but the oppressive feeling of being stared down by a higher being was all too real.
He saw the mist shift and churn, its form unstable, and heard the thunderous, heavy breathing of some enormous beast.
Within a few breaths, the aura surrounding the giant creature gradually changed from pitch black to a vivid blue-green, spreading outward in rippling waves. Those waves slowly transformed into ferocious green flames, baring their fangs as they surged forward.
The blue-green fire ripples crept closer and closer to Lin Jin. Just moments ago, he had been shivering from the cold wind; now, he could already feel the searing heat.
He was about to be completely swallowed by the blue-green light and the scorching temperature. Unable to flee and barely able to keep his eyes open, Lin Jin could only instinctively raise his arm to shield himself, bracing for the terrifying burn to come.
The scalding air currents whipped his hair and robes into a frenzy, his skin burning so badly it began to ache.
Despair filled Lin Jin’s heart.
Was a cannon fodder character’s fate really this miserable? Just taking a casual walk in the wilderness, and he ends up being burned to death by something that fell from the sky?
He felt as though both his soul and body were about to be ignited by the flames. The words “I’m done for” flashed vividly in his mind—yet in the very next second, the heat vanished completely, replaced by an extremely gentle, soothing aura of spiritual energy.
That thread of spiritual power wrapped around Lin Jin, shielding him entirely from the flames.
He froze for a moment, then cautiously opened his eyes.
The terrifying blue-green flames that had been pressing down on him were now completely restrained by a luminous white spiritual force, utterly unable to resist.
Before Lin Jin could fully process what was happening, he lifted his gaze slightly and saw a hazy white figure appear before him.
The figure seemed to be a slender young man, surrounded by a soft, glowing white light. Lin Jin couldn’t see His features clearly, but sensing His presence gave him an inexplicable feeling of familiarity and warmth.
Who was this?
And why was He saving him?
Lin Jin’s thoughts drifted at the wrong moment—and just then, the figure turned back and “looked” at him.
Then, slowly, gently, He raised a hand and rested it on top of Lin Jin’s head.
In that instant, Lin Jin felt a warm, tranquil force flow from the man’s palm into every part of his body, little by little healing his injuries.
Eyes wide with confusion, Lin Jin then saw the man turn toward the massive beastly shadow nearby.
The overwhelming fiery pressure that had nearly crushed Lin Jin moments ago now seemed like nothing more than a leaf toyed with between the man’s fingers. He dispersed the flames and mist, then used spiritual power to lift a small ball of light from the center of the black fog and placed it into Lin Jin’s arms.
“Take it.”
“…?”
Lin Jin instinctively hugged the glowing orb and looked up at the slender figure again.
He could no longer clearly remember how Records of the Arrogant Immortal described this part of the plot. He only remembered this desolate hillside—and the fragment of a fallen god’s soul that was supposed to grant Han Ao his great opportunity.
The figure before him fit the description of a “remnant soul” perfectly, and the power He displayed certainly lived up to the word “god.”
Which meant…
Had he accidentally stolen the protagonist’s destined opportunity?!
His heart skipped a beat.
Lin Jin immediately reached out, trying to grab the “fallen god’s” sleeve—but his hand passed straight through the illusory white light.
“Immortal, you… I… did you give this to the wrong person? I’m just a random passerby, no luck, no future. I really suggest you wait a bit longer—the true chosen one is on his way…”
Lin Jin babbled anxiously, talking and gesturing all at once. Before he could finish, he suddenly heard the fallen god give a soft chuckle, followed by an inscrutable remark:
“…So foolish.”
“…?”
Huh?
Did this immortal just call him stupid?
That seemed a bit rude.
Lin Jin was still bewildered when the fallen god spoke again:
“What I gave you is not an opportunity.”
After a brief pause, His tone grew lighter.
“It is fate.”
“…?”
What’s the difference?
Do immortals all speak in riddles like this?
“I know you do not belong to this world. But fate is thus—what has passed is fixed, yet what is to come may still be pursued.”
“…!”
Lin Jin’s heart seemed to stop for a moment before suddenly pounding wildly.
He spoke urgently, “You know I’m not from this world? Then, then do you know how I can go back? Can I return to my original world? What do I need to do?”
Although Lin Jin had no family, no career, and very few friends in his original world, that was still where he had grown up. There was technology, order, and laws there. At the very least, he could live safely in a society governed by law, without worrying about being captured and eaten alive.
But after he asked, the fallen god fell silent.
For a long time, He said nothing, merely lowering His head slightly, as though gazing into Lin Jin’s eyes.
After a long while—when the luminous white figure began to dissipate at the edges, and when Lin Jin thought he would never receive an answer—the figure finally spoke again.
He did not answer the question, but instead said abruptly:
“I will give you a line of poetry.”
